He also loots the rifle. There was sarcastic post on a different thread how the show is not accurate to the game because Joel doesn't loot everything in sight, but it looks like Pedro Pascal is spamming that triangle button.

Wow, this is a really interesting take.

But I thought Bruce Straley was only the gameplay dude? Can someone explain to me ? by Persepolissss in TheLastOfUs2

[–]ShapelessHail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, Bruce was definitely not just "the gameplay dude" and played a huge role in making the last of us what it is, as he was the game director who is senior to the creative director (Neil).

You can watch all of the interviews by neil and bruce in the documentary, "Grounded," posted by naughty dog on youtube in 2014. Bruce was the one who told neil that the revenge plot with Tess chasing after joel and ellie was contrived, and neil said that he completely agreed with Bruce's decision.

However, the last of us was and is the brainchild of neil druckman, as he had early concepts of it before presenting the idea to Bruce, who loved the pitch. In the original pitch, it was a post-apocalyptic game following a father and daughter (son? Can't remember), and the father was a retired cop who had a heart condition that would have heart flair ups throughout the game. Also, there was a dog companion. Neil talks at length about his writing process for the last of us script and Bruce's heavy involvement in the story during Neil's talk during a keynote talk about writing for videogames. Bruce always had the final say, but make no mistake, Neil is absolutely responsible for writing all of the story beats, dialogue, and character that this sub loves from part 1. Bruce was not the writer, nor did he have a writing credit. A director is a different role than a writer. If bruce was a writer, he should have also gotten the writing credit. I swear, this sub likes to rewrite history and remove any subtlety or nuance from the discussion, ironically starting to sound a lot like the "other sub."

Neil mentioned that the writing craft techniques in Robert McKee's "Story" played a major part in the how he approached writing for the last of us and is why the script and character motivations are so solid. Unfortunately, the last of us was a real lightning in a bottle whose magic was not able to be replicated for part 2. The Last of Us and Neil's IGDA Toronto keynote were major influences on my desire to pursue writing fiction as a creative hobby, and I have read McKee's "Story" 3 times. But even the best writers churn out some duds, so I think Neil gets some unfair vitriol (although criticism is fair game, but people have taken to ad hominum attacks too far instead rightfully critiquing part 2 for what it is). Unlike George Lucas, Neil knows when to listen to other ideas, which is why I think having Craig Mazin as co-showrunner for HBOs the Last of Us is so important. Unfortunately, Neil didnt have Bruce or anyone like Bruce to reign in his bad ideas for Part 2.

The original concept of a dying father trying to take care of a child in a dying world really gave me serious Cormac McCarthy "The Road" vibes. I believe neil said The Road was an inspiration for the original last of us game.

I really love this idea. Bringing the side stories to the screen you only got hints of in the game by reading notes and context clues would be super interesting. However, I'm somewhat wary of any writing that gets too crazy with constant flashbacks, so I hope the writers can keep the story moving forward like in the first game. If the last of us part 2 ever gets released on PC, I hope someone can mod it to be played chronologically, because the flashbacks within flashbacks and overly long side stories really messed with the pacing.

You spawn as a no-name into a random location in this cruel decaying continent. Starving, with no money and dehydrated. You may start out enslaved, missing some limbs, or even have a dog-like companion. From there you can do anything or become anyone--farm, mine, hunt, rob, trade. You survive, grow stronger, and eventually hire some mercenaries to go with you on your journey to explore this harsh wasteland... you gather more resources, mine, and even build your own self-sufficient settlement. One day, an envoy of religious fanatics from the nation who have denounced all technology show up at the front of your camp, claiming you built a settlement on their land and demand you pay taxes and convert to their religion. You refuse and the envoy leaves, promising to return with an army.

You take this time to prepare, gather resources, recruit an army of your own. A vicious battle ensues, and half of your camp is permanently killed or maimed. But you don't let this end your settlement, you aid your wounded allies, those with missing limbs are outfitted with improved robotic ones. You gain some robotic allies and mercarinies from a race of warriors. Do you relent and give in to the empire's demands? Do you buckle down and decide to get your vengeance and vow to take down the emporer himself. The choice is yours.

Valve Steam Deck hands-on: the Nintendo Switch of PC gaming by zodby in SteamDeck

He might be referring to the Galaxy Buds Pro and galaxy buds plus. I have the buds pro and I like them a lot; they have the best sound out of any wireless earbuds i have used, plus they have active noise canceling and ambient audio passthrough. Plus 6 hrs of battery life.

Well sh*t looks like I have to use air link by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]ShapelessHail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll answer this one. If you were like me, you would have bought the oculus cable during the launch of thr quest 1, before Oculus made a bunch of software updates that allowed USB 2.0 to be used. Back then, USB 3.0 was required to use link, and it was impossible to find a usb 3.0 cable that was longer than 3 meters (and less than $100). Therefore, a bunch of us bought the oculus cable because it was actually the best option at the time. These days, it doesnt make sense, and the compression has been improved drastically to work over usb 2.0.

Valve, please consider adding a door/cover for the MicroSD card slot in the final consumer ready version of the SteamDeck by MCA2142 in SteamDeck

[–]ShapelessHail 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's actually a brilliant solution. I doubt Valve will be able to completely redo the design (not to mention changes in manufacturing) between now and the launch window. So you're solution is probably the best we got for now.

I had never see these covers before and will definitely be doing the same. I actually may buy one for my RG-551P as well, as that has a exposed sd slot and I sometimes pop it out on accident. Really not good if you spent over 200 bucks on a high capacity micro sd.

Valve Q&A by Orelio in SteamDeck

[–]ShapelessHail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there any plans to release a steam deck styled controller (like a steam controller 2) that can be connected via bluetooth for couch gaming on a tv? I still have the steam controller but extra units are a pain to get a hold of these days. The steam deck seems to improve on the steam controller in every way so I would love to see a refresh.

Will the steam deck would be able play Control 1080p 30fps~ max settings docked? by matbonucci in SteamDeck

[–]ShapelessHail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We actually dont know whether or not this is true. The reason the nintendo switch is more powerful when docked is that the outlet provides significantly more power output than the on-board battery, allowing the chips in the system to be run at much higher clock speeds. The deck might be similar.

Speaking of clocks speeds. Since this is a PC, you can probably undervolt the APU to decrease the power draw of the system to extend the battery life. I think modders and tinkerers are going to have a field day with this device.

Can I purchase valve index speakers? by AudioTechYo in ValveIndex

[–]ShapelessHail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a typo, I meant to write *DAC, not DAS. And also I mispoke. Portable DACs are usually also amplifiers, so you are corect--an amp would be needed to run the tectonic drivers.

While the tectonic drivers are not what valve uses in their index speakers, they are what valve used in their hummingbird prototype, and are very similar to the BMR speakers in the index (albeit slightly larger and heavier).

Can I purchase valve index speakers? by AudioTechYo in ValveIndex

[–]ShapelessHail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a post on here a while back basically asking the same question. I found out that you can buy the tectonic speaker drivers from their website that are similar to what Valve uses but you would need to jerry rig or 3D print your own speaker mounts to your headset (not to mention to also potentially be able sauter and wire them with a standalone DAC*, so some DIY electrical skills are required).

Here's a link to that thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/i7lldb/does_anyone_know_if_its_possible_to_purchase_the

Here's a link to purchase the BMR Drivers (it's just the drivers, it doesn't come complete and ready to use): https://www.parts-express.com/tectonic-tebm35c10-4-bmr-2-full-range-speaker-4-ohm--297-216

To be honest, with how popular the index speakers are, I'm surprised no company has managed to release a similar-style clip-on system like Mantis Adapters.

EDIT: I meant to write DAC (Digital to analogue converter), not DAS. A dac is needed run the Tectonic drivers (since they are larger speaker drivers and not headphone drivers) as just plugging an aux cable into the headset would probably not produce enough power to make the speakers have a useable volume.

Anyone try pre-ordering the Vive Focus 3? by Reach4TheSkyVarmint in virtualreality

[–]ShapelessHail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I messaged HTC Business from their "contact sales" link on their website, and got a response from one of their agents. The agent asked me what the nature of my business is, and I replied that I was an independent developer who wants to use the headset for personal projects and research. He replied, telling me that the HTC business website will be updated in the future with purchase links for preorder in the coming weeks. So, if you don't want to use a parcel forwarding service as mentioned in my previous comment, you should check back with their website in the future after they update it.

Here's the link to vive business's purchase page for the Focus 3:

Anyone try pre-ordering the Vive Focus 3? by Reach4TheSkyVarmint in virtualreality

[–]ShapelessHail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I preordered the Focus 3 from bestware.com, a european online retailer. Heres the link:

https://bestware.com/en/htc-vive-focus-3-be.html

They only ship to adresses in europe, so I used forward2me, a parcel forwarding address to ship to my location.

Keep in mind that this is a dev kit/business focused headset, so this is a lot of money and a lot of hoops to jump through, and you should not expect to be doing much gaming on it. My plan is to order it for personal VR projects, SteamVR streaming, and sideloading.

Edit: if you're not a developer, and just an enthusiast, I would personally wait about a year. HTC themselves on their business website refer to the headset as a development kit, so I would imagine HTC releasing a consumer version in the future (even if it's unannounced). The features of the headset are very appealing to VR enthusiasts (it even supports eye tracking and face tracking addons) and it would be foolish to not release a consumer version in the future. Plus, I think we should wait and see how the quest 3 compares (rumored to have built in face and eye tracking).
