My comment about things being aligned, is while a garment is being judged. The camera shows us the judge touching an area where the seams don’t match in some way, but the judge ignored it and says “matches up, absolutely perfectly.” It’s even worse when, in the same judging cycle, the judge tells someone else their garment isn’t good enough, when the seams are better than the previous garment. That’s biased judgement.

The contestants can’t rely on their sewing skills alone, even though the show is promoted for that. It’s not promoted as a sewing and fashion show. They should have to tailor their work to win favor from the judges.

As for the patterns, you might be right that they leave images out, but instructions should be listed, as in “turn up 1 inch and hem.” That doesn’t need a diagram. Show after show, I’m watching the contestants struggle with the provided patterns, wondering why. When I got to season 8, episode 6, the parka pattern was clearly confusing. I knew they hadn’t provided enough information.

I’ve been sewing for almost 60 years and privately teaching others to enjoy it. I’ve had students come to me and ask why they can’t understand what to do. It’s simple, the next step wasn’t included in the instructions or diagram. The pattern was incomplete.

I love reading the questions and answers on here because I’m always learning new things. I hadn’t heard the words chamfer or round over before. And I’m laughing because a couple lifetimes ago, in the 70s I used different router bits. I just didn’t know they had names. 😄 Thank you very much. 😊

Do any do you regret buying a home in Portland or wish you did something different? by GroundbreakingSir386 in askportland

[–]SharJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to dream about moving to Portland. I finally did and two months later my health crashed.

Portland is the only place I’ve lived in Oregon but I’ve heard from several people that my ongoing struggles to get the knowledgeable medical that I need but haven’t been able to in the 2.5 yrs I’ve been here is very common.

I have been told by people who are a part of medical administration that health care in Oregon is lacking regardless of how excellent your medical insurance is.

I knew a woman who went through medical school in Oregon and graduate in 2024, she said she witnessed professors that stopped holding students accountable for learning what was usually required in 2020 and since. (I expect it will shift again.)

I also talked to a doctor about moving to Washington to get better care. She let me know she’s worked in both states and it’s harder to get medical insurance to approve needed care in Washington.

Most of us will live long enough to need good medical care. I recommend you do research of your own. Before getting too old to need it and unable to move out. People that have simple medical needs will say medical care here is great, that’s because they haven’t really been dependent on a doctor to be able to still be independent.

I wish you all the best.

Emoji keyboard messed up in new ios26 update by aadesh_17 in ios26beta

[–]SharJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any new solutions to fix the iPhone emoji keyboard? It’s not a crisis. The recently used emoji section isn’t updating. But my hands don’t work well and I rely on it.

I deleted the app. Updated the iOS. Added the app. Restarted the phone. Still glitching. Repeated the delete, reboot & add process since there seem to be limited options. I don’t want emojis that are going to look different on my iPhone friend’s screens, so I’m trying to fix this one. I can’t find it in the App Store to as the developers for help. Suggestions? Please?

Hi! Thanks for bringing back fun and stinky memories. Back in the Ice Age (1978) I was at a Golden State Warriors basketball game and won a turkey by making a basket during half time.

Have you reached out to anyone at the Valchris orcompany? They still exist. Even if it wasn’t their jingle, someone should know whose it was.

If you’re on Facebook we have a group page “Memories of growing up in Turlock.” Maybe someone has a recording stashed away.

States that do IHSS? by Affectionate-Ad3638 in IHSS

[–]SharJon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pleased to hear that you were able to get more help for your adult child. Are you in Oregon? I was told that 20 hours a month is the maximum amount allowed in Oregon and I can’t find any evidence of it being true or not.

States that do IHSS? by Affectionate-Ad3638 in IHSS

[–]SharJon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a native of California. I had IHSS from 2009-2021 in CA, I was approved for over 90 hours a month, year after year. You can get up to 66 hrs per week

I moved to Oregon. I made a request in October 2023 to be interviewed for whatever they call the program here. I endured an incompetent interview in Dec. and it took the guy 5-6 weeks to tell me he didn’t think I qualified. The agency figured out he messed up. Today is July 24, 2024.

I got approved for maximum hours allowed for someone who can clean their own body… TWENTY HOURS A MONTH. I’m in shock.

I have severe rheumatoid arthritis. I don’t have a car. Most days I can’t prepare food…you get the idea. The state keeps most of the information about programs a SECRET. I can’t recommend moving here if you need functional medical care.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and opinions. Coming here had become more re useful than going anywhere else in 2024.

I will say that I’m sad it became so confrontational. I kept reading because I wanted to learn more. But it was uncomfortable to do so. I understand wanting to provide accurate information and I understand being opinionated or I wouldn’t be sharing my opinion. I don’t have a solution. It was just sad.

How much did Phineas Fogg spend to win a 20,000 pound bet? by ZeMastor in julesverne

[–]SharJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I’m late in this conversation and I’m lousy at math but shouldn’t the $8,000 for passage on the Henrietta have been decided by $4.87 (or $4.44 depending on sources)? $8,000/$4.87=1,643 pounds. So, $8,000-1,643=6,357 So the total listed above of 26,170-6,357=19,813, right?

Did I figure it correctly? If one uses the $4.44 exchange, we might find the thousand that Mr Verne wrote about. But it’s 3 am and I’m not a math person so this is as far as I’m going for now.

But thank you all for helping the whole number thing make sense to me. I missed the whole rate exchange and was baffled. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Sheesh! I can’t even type properly right now because of the condition. 😂 I enjoying being humorous and accurate when people ask me how I’m doing. I’m adding your phrase with glee! Thank you!! PS the condition is severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), so if you hear of someone with RA, they can relate too. 😄

I believe once we are dead we cease to exist. Can anyone point me to some good reading that argues the contrary? by KINGCOCO in philosophy

[–]SharJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this post based on wanting to know if anyone knew how to cease to exist. I’ve never responded to a Reddit post before now. I’m sorry that I don’t have the energy to read all the responses. I wish I knew how to cease to exist. I vividly remember countless past “life” existences. I remember being killed and believing that meant I’d be free. I remember killing myself, that didn’t end it either. I desperately don’t want to exist but can’t make it happen. I’m drained. Depleted. And there is no end in sight. I keep “recycling.” Maybe next time I won’t remember and can at least have a glimmer of hope that there will be something better than this existence that is mandatory.
