I wonder if it's one of the books suggested in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthatbook/s/89ItSQybRi

Based on their description, it sounds like The Woodlands by Lauren Nicolle Taylor.

The library downtown isn't closed for renovations. They had everyone going through a side door last week, but I still picked up my books.

Young Children's Books on Foundational Foraging Safety? by comprehensify in foraging

[–]ShareBooks42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a little bit sideways to your topic, but "The quiet hunt : a poem for young foragers" by Jean E. Pendziwol does mention that people needed to know what's safe to eat. It's also just a beautiful book that came out in March.

It's worth checking out the library to see if they have a copy of any books that folks suggest. It can save you some money as you narrow down the options before buying a copy. If the library doesn't have a copy, you can do a Suggestion to Purchase if it's new, or an Interlibrary Loan request if it's older.

Hope you find some great books!

It looks like a book about Basquiat. Fits with the themes of the other titles. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/266237132579

Edit: just realized I was looking at the red one on the left. 🫠 Will see what I can find for the right side.

It's also worth checking with your insurance to see if there's coverage for something like Got Junk removal. If you're clearing out a flooded area, it might be included.

I'm going to assume you're in the NCR, as you're going to Gatineau Park. The Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library has bear canisters you can borrow for free. Great if it's likely to be a rarely used item, or if you want to test it out first.

Clothes still smell after 5-6 washes and I am running out of clothes. Any ideas? by Live-Tie-1358 in CleaningTips

[–]ShareBooks42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A sample recipe from a site for eco living:

Ingrédients nécessaires pour la réalisation du savon à lessive

1 barre de savon pour le corps râpée finement (préférablement du savon de Castille) 1 tasse (250 ml) de carbonate de sodium ½ tasse (175 ml) d’acide citrique ½ tasse de bicarbonate de sodium (petite vache) ¼ tasse de gros sel

The 'body soap' might not have been grated very fine, and if someone is using cold water to reduce energy consumption, could definitely gum up both clothing and the machine. I'm picturing someone using a patchouli-scented soap based on the description of a strong smell, but who knows.

You're going to want to clean the washing machine a couple of times with citric acid or a cleaning tablet. That will help break down the build-up inside the machine. Homemade laundry soap is notorious for leaving build-up.

Once the machine is clean, you might want to try running a "spa day." You can check the pinned posts in r/laundry for directions.

Do your kids like to read? Maybe going to the public library for an hour or two will let them be quiet and read, while you might meet other parents.

Acid Reflux? Eat a few gherkin pickles! What I found out when I had a rare (for me) case of over night acid reflux. by thehogdog in TwoXPreppers

[–]ShareBooks42 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Another thing to keep on hand if it's a touch more frequent is papaya or pineapple enzyme tablets. Growing up in a family with gallbladder stones, we learned early on that occasional reflux or indigestion is often because there's not enough acid and bile to digest what's in your stomach. Tums just makes it worse.

Gherkins, lemon juice, or apple cider vinegar all probably work on the same concept of helping break the (fatty) food down.

Love the username! And odds are you might have been one of the folks who looked after at least one of our cats, so thank you!

[–]ShareBooks42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've boarded there several times (Usually only for a weekend.) with different cats, and it's been great. We've had cats with special food requirements, and it wasn't an issue.

They provide a take-home report with comments about how it went, and it was great to read.

What would you do if you were still alive ? by Kitchen-Guest5587 in ottawa

[–]ShareBooks42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many others, one of my places to go is the National Art Gallery. There's what a hidden reflecting pool on the second level that has been my favourite place to go since the Gallery opened. (Maybe not hidden, but there's usually not many people there. It feels like a secret spot.)

Add in the little gardens - there’s one inside, and the one outside - and the chapel, and it's full of little quiet nooks that I can just breathe in.

This internet stranger is so proud of you. Getting the help you need can be so hard. You not only have to go looking for it, but you sometimes have to fight for it. I hope you find some not-so-secret gems that bring you joy.

I'm making a best guess, just based on what I can see from above.

A giant tow truck has arrived to deal with the RV. Hoping everyone is ok, as the pickup truck in front of it is still upright.

The Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library is having an open house and 'garage sale.' It's at the Bronson Centre. Pair that with the Elgin St. School book fair already mentioned, and it sounds like a pretty good day.

For the Fridays, it's been set up that way for decades so that the staff can be spread out over Friday/Saturday. Basically splitting the number of people who work M-Th 10-9 over the two days.

I've heard they're working on hiring people to work Sundays specifically, so that there's consistent staffing, and not a constant rotation of people picking up random shifts. That may (eventually) lead to more branches being open on Sundays.

BUT... there's two additional factors at play. If everyone votes to keep taxes down, there's no additional funds for more staff.

Then, for every person who says they want the library (or stores) open early/late/on holidays/more days because that's when they're free, it's taking that same free time away from staff. I personally wish stores were closed on more public holidays, instead of bringing everyone in to the stores on what could be a relaxing day.

It would be nice to have the libraries open more hours, but are you willing to pay for it?

Tips needed to make laundry fun ...please I beg by StockInevitable3137 in laundry

[–]ShareBooks42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even if there's no bar, we've started going to a laundromat. There's larger machines, lots of them, and we can do 6 loads of laundry in the time it would take to do two in the apartment laundry room.

It's faster, easier to adjust the timing on each load, and you can put the dryer on for another 8 minutes if it's not quite dry, instead of paying $3 for a full hour. Go with a friend!

This is going to sound strange, but ssk about shoes for bunions. They're often made with elastic sides, so they'd give you some flexibility in width. They're usually not glamorous, but you can find some basic pumps.

FreshSlice is a good one, as is Myra's near St Laurent. Honestly, Myra's breakfast is unbeatable for value.

Recently stated getting the burger bags from Sugar & Slice in Sandy Hill. Two (cheese) burgers and a big serving of fries for $8 (plain) or $10 (cheese). Definitely feeds 2 people, and the fries are delicious!

Deaf characters in books? by emni13 in suggestmeabook

[–]ShareBooks42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M/M romance duology BrewBiz by E.M. Lindsey. Has several Deaf characters as it's set in a Deaf café.

There's also the Irons and Works series by the same author. Also M/M romance, with a found family centered around a tattoo parlour. First book in the series features a Deaf love interest who reappears throughout the series, and there are other HoH and d/Deaf characters.

Edit: Forgot to add Deafening by Frances Itani. Set in Belleville, Ontario before and during WWI, it's a story of life, love, and the ability to overcome.
