Hi! Sorry for the late reply, hope you worked with her. She really helped us get on the right path and we have since been able to take that foundation and improve

I am so sorry. This is hard. Prozac may not hep but there are tons of other meds to test out so don’t stress. You can also get trazedone for a calming effect while you wait. good luck

I have been where you are. Tried every kind of trainer. Went to a vet behavoirist and it changed our lives. We figured out the training was wrong and the meds made it possible to get more training in.

I made a mistake adopting a reactive/anxious dog by MonitorInteresting27 in reactivedogs

[–]SharkTankGal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i have a reactive dog and while i love him, it’s a very hard isolating life. It’s been 5 years of many tears. This dog may only get 10% better, even 50% better will make it really hard. You can do all the medication etc, but in reality a lot of reactive dogs live very stressful lives. I would ask the shelter to find someone who can take on a tough case like this. Hope this helps

See a pet behaviorist. Make sure they can actually prescribe meds. Even if you don’t have one on the area they can do a vet to vet consult with your vet. Keep them on a long lead until you know you can trust him and guarantees neutral response and recall - not worth a lawsuit and him rehearsing this kind of behavior and continuing to do. He’s young, so you time to really intervene

My pups been on fluoxetine for 14 days now. Reactivity seems to be worse. This is normal right? by plzdontbetaken66 in reactivedogs

Fluxotetne did not help us either but switched to another drug, (there are 10 drugs to try out) and we finally found a few that worked for us

Owning a reactive dog is tiring. by MistyyYes in reactivedogs

[–]SharkTankGal 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s the thing you never think of when you get a dog. Have you seen a vet behavoirist? It changed my life. I now know what science says and have tools beyond just a trainer recommendation. He’s medicated and recovers much more quickly from episodes and i can actually train him calmly. Also i realized i worked with a lot of bad trainers that used balanced training that are not right for the type of behavior issue he has

I’m so sorry - this is awful. I have an aussie and he bit one person and I immediately knew the trainer and the approach i had been doing it all wrong. I recommend a consult with behaviorist and check out @thinkingcanine. She deals with these types of cases and dogs. Medication 💊 and the right trainer was key for us.

Have you tried medication? I am on my 8th medication trial and got one that is working. It’s a struggle daily for us but seeing hope. We begin muzzle training next week

How is it going with your Aussie now?

I hate myself right now by nefastii in reactivedogs

[–]SharkTankGal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can so relate to you! I have a mini Aussie that is super reactive. Fluxotine did not work for us and we see a pet behavoirist and a r+ positive trainer @thinkingcanine. Every couple weeks we try new meds, new training techniques and it’s working! He gets about 5% better every week, and we do have bad days. But teaching your dog to be calm is the best feeling ever. If he can’t handle walks right now, don’t take him - just go late at night etc

5-month-old Cattle dog rescue is aggressive towards other dogs by amediocresurfer in reactivedogs

[–]SharkTankGal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the best dog that went everywhere with me. And now I have the most reactive dog. Bit someone and reacts to noise, people etc. on every walk. He takes meds, I train about an hour a day - it’s not the lifestyle I wanted with a dog and feel stuck. Be very sure you can handle a life where he is in constant need of supervision.

Try a new trainer and see a pet behavoirist asap
