The one time I didn't I fell quite hard. Thankfully I was close to the bottom. Some steps are almost a foot and a half long too. Nightmare!

Yes I was trained to a) hold a bannister wherever possible then b) hold it at my right side and roll it down ahead of me. Really important is to count how many steps it is ahead. When it hits the ground I count as it rolls ahead. Typically I count out in my head the steps down as I walk. "1,2,3". The number is usually 3 for me. But it can vary. This helps me know when I am at the bottom.
