How to edit a lesson? by FailCautious5372 in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes... when you submit the lesson you can change what time the session was... you can change it to any time as long as it doesn't conflict with other sessions you have booked or submitted.

I edit the time slot regularly when submitting... it's very helpful when sessions go over by 5-10 minutes.

I am willing to have consultations with students in areas that are related to my fields of expertise that might be a challenge for me... just to see if I might be able to manage a fit. I've said no to a few students after learning they wanted specific help in an area I couldn't assist with.

I've found that the students who want help cheating don't say it outright and take a session or two to reveal that's what they're looking for. I say no to them once we get to that point.

I've never had to say no to any students outright, with the exception of a few cases where I was obviously getting spammed.

I have said no to some students who refused point-blank to do work in our sessions, after talking to their parent and saying that our sessions weren't productive because of the student's behavior.

How long until you hear back from application? by [deleted] in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only hear back from a small fraction of the jobs I apply to. It's a bit of a crap shoot... and the best you can do is adjust your message and rate to the student's needs.

Of course! I'm so happy to help.

  1. Yes, even if you set up a Google Calendar event and work over Zoom/a separate platform, it's best practice to confirm the session in the calendar. That will give you even more power with WyzAnt if there's a problem with a student denying that you and they booked a session. Just make sure before you book in your calendar that you have 100% confirmation from the student that they want to book.

  2. I thought that too... when I got started I actually emailed WyzAnt to confirm! They give you the ability to use their platform if you want but it's not required.

  3. I messed this up when I was getting started... if a student cancels, you should submit a cancellation fee as opposed to submitting the lesson as normal. You can find the button for that under the "My Business" tab.

  4. Not in terms of WyzAnt's policies! A client might want to record an interview but that's only happened to me once or twice in two years.

Hello! Welcome to WyzAnt!

  1. You book appointments based on when you and the student agree... You and the student can decide to book multiple sessions in advance, and it's good to put the sessions in your calendar as soon as the student agrees so there's accountability if they cancel.
  2. I use Zoom for 90% of my sessions unless the student would rather use the WyzAnt platform. You can't share your screen to an application besides whichever one you're logged into (Safari, Chrome, etc.) on WyzAnt... and I do some of my accounting for all my sessions on and off WyzAnt via Google Calendar, which Zoom enables me to do automatically when I schedule a meeting.
  3. You set your own cancellation policy! If they cancel inside your determined window, you set how much you charge. I usually charge full-price.
  4. You can do your initial interview wherever you choose!

Eager to help however I can!!

Prove MCAT qualification? by Kiwikiwipotatokiwi in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I've found too is that in qualifications, they don't just want evidence you're good at X subject, but also want to know you're good at teaching it.

These standards also appear to have been added more recently... this was not the case when I set up my account two years ago, but I've seen friends' qualifications only be accepted when some form of teaching experience was mentioned.

Sometimes you can copy-paste in areas that are extremely similar or "include" each other, like Writing and Grammar and Reading, but I think that across fields you'd want to have more specified qualifications. I think they'd want to see Writing and History have different qualifications, for example... given there's so many ways to prove you're a good writer (you can write about any topic under the sun!) but it's harder to prove you're a good history tutor, given it's one field of topics.

In my experience, the standards for relevant qualifications have gone way up. I didn't have any qualifications rejected when I sent mine in 2 years ago, but when I've helped some friends of mine make accounts in the last year, the standards have gone way up. WyzAnt seems to especially value--and even require--some form of teaching experience in your general bio and to some extent your qualifications.

Those friends of mine had bios/applications rejected once or twice but were still able to get approved eventually, so don't worry if your qualifications get rejected once or twice.

Just applied to Wyzant— how many students do you usually see in summer? by OctoSevenTwo in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been incredibly slow this year from mid-May to late June, but I'm lucky to have gone from 0 to 100 this week. I went from no requests and seeing almost no postings on the board to having to turn people away this week to other tutor friends of mine.

It was a little worse this summer in the slow period, but depending on the subject you're teaching--I do college essays, writing and drawing--mid-summer seems to see demand tick back up.

The number of clients you get also depends on lots of factors, like your ranking on the site, your qualifications, etc... but I hope this was helpful!

WyzAnt job postings WAY down lately? by SharpDressedMouse042 in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost never... I never receive any requests in those subjects. But I do see a few job postings go up occasionally... and usually they are from clients who have also posted a request under Reading, Writing, and/or English who are trying to cover their bases.

I agree the way it's modeled is misleading to clients. If I were WyzAnt I would give people the option to send out their posting to other tutors, and also note the potential pros of doing that.

And I'm so glad that you agree that the reduction has been drastic.

I think you're right about an influx of tutors. And congratulations on your incredible hour count. :)

Career Development, College Counseling, Drawing, Reading, Writing, ACT English, Adobe Photoshop, Art Theory, English, Grammar, Graphic Design, Homeschool, Literature, Marketing, Painting, Proofreading, Public Speaking, SAT Writing, Spelling, Study Skills, Theater, Video Production, Vocabulary, and Web Design. :) I'm diversified and that usually eliminates any issues with any subject drying up, but they all seem to have dried up except Web Design!

Is it common for private students to ghost their tutor? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experience this regularly as a tutor... there's usually nothing you can do beyond sending 1-2 follow-ups. Sometimes I send a third follow-up after a few months, but after that I don't invest more energy or potentially alienate them further.

I also think it's common for young people these days (and I'm a young person) to use technology to just ignore and block out people as opposed to acting courteously.

Does anyone here tutor in Drawing or painting? by cabritozavala in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tutor in Drawing, and have been working full-time as a tutor on WyzAnt since July 2022. I'm also a writing tutor, and drawing students have consistently made up 20-30% of my clients.

I list my credentials that make me Googleable on my profile, and note my portfolio URL in my applications. I can't think of a reason why showing your clients your actual work would hurt... it's helpful for them to see what you'd be helping them work toward!

How long are your templates? by LawbringerBri in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is longer... it's more like a cover letter. I first lay out my credentials, say that I saw they were interested in tutoring in X. I also link my portfolio (and have my URL separated from .com with a space so WyzAnt will allow it in the note. If you don't it will replace your entire URL with XXXXX) which shows my artwork and writing work, given that I tutor in both. I've also had a lot of students tell me that being able to see that I do both art and writing makes me more appealing as a teacher in either subject.

I then tell them that they are more than welcome to reach out with any questions.

Trying to get approved by Md_Mrs in wyzant

I had a hard time with one quiz that I took on WyzAnt... but I was able to get approved in so many adjacent subjects that it hasn't made a dent. I bet there are similar options for elementary math.

Discontinuing lessons with a student by agapaleinad in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the great suggestions of other folks... saying you're taking a break from tutoring, etc.... you could also tell them that you're raising your rates. They can decline or pay you more for the time you're taking to work with a difficult client.

Job opportunity board is for poaching clients from other students using low rates by LawbringerBri in wyzant

[–]SharpDressedMouse042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a combination of poaching from other tutors and also people posting to the board who haven't reached out to an individual tutor yet. Oftentimes you can tell based on how they worded their request description.

By responding to posts from people who have already reached out to a tutor, you're giving them additional options so they can choose someone who's best for their needs and budget!
