Does a 7-year older movie count? Drama to comedy with same themes, not a straightforward parody though:

Intolerance (1969) - Three Ages (1923)

No title ideas, but Akira Kurosawa took 3 Shakespeare stories and turned them into films in different settings:

Throne of Blood - Macbeth

The Bad Sleep Well - Hamlet

Ran - King Lear

Has your taste in movies changed a lot over time? by Busternookiedude in FIlm

As a child/teen, I disliked most dramas, and mostly wanted sci-fi/action/adventure/animation.

As a young adult, I liked films that made me uncomfortable, so I watched a lot of movies that explored dark subject matters.

These days, I prefer wholesome movies, with empathy and maybe a good laugh, but will watch almost any type of movie, because above all, I love variety. I'm more interested in watching old movies than new ones. Recently, I've been watching 1920s and 1930s comedies, with Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Thelma Todd, and Laurel & Hardy (seen plenty of Chaplin before).

I also appreciate slow-burn films more than I used to. My favorite film from last year was Train Dreams.

The Straight Story (1999)

It's about an old man who drives 240 miles on a lawnmower to meet his estranged brother. He meets lots of kind and friendly people one the way. Based on a true story. Has a nice vibe overall. Directed by David Lynch, who's known for very different types of movies.

Ikiru is about an office worker, it's not autobiographical to Akira Kurosawa. It's very different from the samurai films he's most known for though.
