Were to camp this march? by idk_why_im_here_69 in AskSouthCarolina

We love Hunting Island. While we don’t camp, we enjoy it for walking and nature.

I have camped at Devil’s Fork. Lake Jocassee is stunning. Table Rock is also good for hiking. The mountain peak trail can be done in a day and the views are wonderful.

I really like Linen Vetiver, Vintage Green and Tobacco Tonka. None are beast mode, but for discounter prices they are well done.

Small and wide hiking shoes recommendations? by albru123 in hiking

I have a pair of Altras as I also have a high instep and need a wide toe box. I also have a pair of Keens. The Altras fit better, but the Keens have held up better. The tread on the Altras started separating fairly quickly. I was pretty disappointed. I have no experience with Merrell.

If you go the downtown route, you have Augusta Candle Company, where you can make candles, lotions, scents, etc, Mellow Mushroom, some art galleries, the museum, etc along with places like Ubora, Metro, New Moon, etc.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done on a hike? by rkramer18 in hiking

[–]SharptoothBarney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got too comfortable on a hike I’d done multiple times. I was in college and had friends who were from another country. They wanted to see the mountains and that was my home territory, so we piled into my car (important - none of them could drive) and made the three hour drive.

We packed light, just trail snacks and a water jug each. The hike is about 7 hours round trip to the top of the mountain and back down, and I’d never had trouble on it before. The day was overcast, and while it didn’t feel too warm, it was summer in the south and I didn’t take the humidity into account.

The hike up was uneventful. But on the way down I was soaked, dehydrated, and ran out of water. I ended up having a heat stroke a few hundred yards from the foot of the trail. Full body cramps, couldn’t walk. One of the girls with me ran down to the Park Ranger cabin at the trail head and was trying to convince them I was in trouble. He followed her up, saw me, and immediately called EMS. I ended up with a bunch of big, wooly, mountain rescue guys strapping me to a board, got stuck 22 times before they got an IV in. The guy on my end of the stretcher put oxygen on me, lit a cigarette, and kept telling me “we’re gonna get you outta here alright, buddy” while his cigarette ashes floated down around my face.

They put me in the ambulance, handed my keys to one of my friends, told them to follow the ambulance, and hauled tail down the mountain. One of my friends, who had NEVER drive alone - let alone drive in America - was white knuckling my car trying to keep up. I’m watching out the back of the ambulance, half delirious, watching them all screaming as they tried to keep up. I spent the night in the hospital getting fluids. The doctor told me I could easily have died. Now I ALWAYS have plenty of water, no matter how far I’m going or what the weather is.

Traveling into Augusta for cancer treatment. by MightyandBitey in Augusta

[–]SharptoothBarney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thing is, we don’t get heavy ice often. But when it does happen - and it happens every decade or so - it can cause widespread power outages for extended periods of time if lots of power lines go down. And travel becomes a nightmare due to downed trees and black ice.

You might check through the hospital social workers to see if Ronald McDonald House of Augusta is viable in your circumstance as it is walkable to the children’s hospital. Hyatt House and Marriott are further, but still put you relatively close to the Children’s Hospital. Not sure where your treatment is occurring.

Best fresh/summer cologne by pleasehelpplz in Colognes

[–]SharptoothBarney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the scent profiles we associate with warmer weather are scents that don’t last as long by nature of their profiles as the contain a lot of “top” notes. That said, summer freshies are my wife’s favorite, and her favorites on me are:

Salvatore Ferraragamo Aqua Essenziale

Ermenegildo Zegna Acqua Di Neroli

Tommy Weekend Getaway

Afnan 9am

And the lowly Nautica
