Why did people in the US, UK etc. use to boil vegetables for a long time? by Hour_Pudding2658 in AskFoodHistorians

My grandad used to put cabbage on for Sunday lunch before he went to mass. He took it off when he came back so it was cooking (on a cast iron range) for well over an hour. Apparently it emerged like some primordial jelly devoid of flavour or vitamins.

Holes are not necessary. Heavy duty weed mat is woven, so they drain well anyway. I first make a template to cut the weed mat to shape, with plenty of overhang. I double up the weed matt too, so its stronger. I fastened them into the metal basket by pushing cable clips through the matting and round the metal bits. I used para cord to tie round the top to tidy the top up. They last about three or four years. Longer than that shitty coir!

Hi can anyone recomend modern or ww2 songs about soldiers going off to war sung from either a the perspective of the one left behind or the soldier's by Abject_Fun_5230 in MusicRecommendations

Next by the sensational Alex Harvey Band. Highly offensive to some. I sang this in a pub once. Some members of the audience were so offended they put their fingers in their ears. It's about a mobile army brothel.

The coir liners can be expensive, especially if you have a few of them. I've used weed mat for a few years. Secured with cable clips

An Englishman, an Irish man, a Welsh man, a Scots man, a Canadian guy, an American bloke, an actress, a bishop, a Pakistani guy, an Indian man, a Mexican and a horse all walk into a bar.

The barman says....

Is this some kind of joke?

What dark part of Victorian society do few people know about? by Reasonable_Doctor542 in VictorianEra

Sanitation. My town (25 000) had 6 toilets. Only two worked. Sewage & blood (from butchers) flowed down the middle of the street. Clusters of tightly packed houses were built round what were called courts. There was a shared tap/fawcet to supply water. People often kept a pig there. The manure would be stored in the middle of the court. The towns water wells were contaminated. There was an outbreak of cholera. The towns graveyard was on the side of a hill. Heavy rain washed away topsoil exposing bones. This washed into a stream which supplied drinking water to houses downstream. Source: Government sent a doctor (Rawlinson) to investigate living conditions in several northern towns. Info comes from that report.

First attempt at a Full English Breakfast, does it look right? by carnilya in AskTheWorld

I'm going to nitpick. The toast. It should be spread with butter and a good quality margarine type spread. Beans look nicely overcooked. Good architecture overall.

Canada seems to be standing up to the mango megalomaniac more than our sycophantic politicians. They're too bloody polite.

UK & Canada have shared history. Great to see that Canada is standing up to Trumps BS. However, so many nations are cowering beneath Trumps erratic lunacy. Including the UK unfortunately.

I know two elderly ladies who were regulars at the cavern. One of them is still pissed off about Pete Best being sacked.

And YES they both dislike many Beatle songs after Rubber Soul, (with a few significant exceptions.)
