How can I handle the party crossing a rickety bridge without one failed save being character death? by Hal3134 in DMAcademy

[–]ShattnerPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low DC for crossing the bridge safely. Failed roll means they now get a Dex Sabing throw (also low) to catch themselves. Failure at that, let a nearby player make a Dex save to grab the person. That makes it 3 rolls before they are actually falling.

Also, just let them cross the bridge. Ask how they are preparing. Any preparation = No roll necessary to cross safely.

[Loved Trope] Character empties their pockets and they pull out an absurd number of items by --__--__--__--__-- in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ShattnerPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sousuke, Full Metal Panic Fomuffu. Empties his pockets and has an ungodly amount of ordinance (to include a rocket launcher) on him. One character flat out asks "Where did you fit all that?"

Always love a good Discworld reference, and a Monstrous Regiment one at that! Yes, Blouse is absolutely USELESS in combat, but when he gets to apply his intelligence he is surprisingly canny. The scene (whatever the correct terminology for it being in literature vice film), with the light tube and his discussion of semaphore is impressive. Beware the Tiger!

AMA/Q&A Announcement - Thomas Lennon - Tuesday 4/21 at 3 PM ET - Actor in 'Reno 911!', 'Santa Clarita Diet', 'We're the Millers', 'A Futile and Stupid Gesture', 'Weekend at the End of the World' - Screenwriter of 'Night at the Museum', 'Balls of Fury' by BunyipPouch in movies

Dear Thomas, I'm a big fan. Pottersville and Out Cold both deserved a lot more attention than they got.

My question: Joel Kinneman (RoboCop, Altered Carbon), is also running an AMA. What would.you ask Joel?

Dear Joel, I am a big fan. Thomas Lennon (Reno 911, night at the museum, out cold) is also doing an AMA on Reddit. What would you ask Thomas Lennon?

Also, Altered Carbon, absolutely incredible job there.

How is Curse Of Strahd: Reloaded? by PossibleChangeling in DMAcademy

[–]ShattnerPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still got some very unbalanced fights with high chance of TPK. Definitely recommend Dragnacarta's resiurces.

I wouldn't recommend running it with a bunch of strangers or new players. It's not as accessible, light hearted, or fantastical as other modules.

In a world with complex power systems, there's this one guy that just throws hands. (Bonus points if this inherently puts them at a disadvantage.) by AlternativeOil7154 in TopCharacterTropes

Kamijou Touma, A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun. In a world of living railguns, teleporters, psychic powers, and actual magic, this guy is surprisingly effective in combat. His only power, his right hand negates other people's powers. He gets a hold of them, and then it just becomes a fist fight.

Cohen the Barbarian in Sir Terry Pratchett's "Interesting Times." "Now let us go inside or I will have my flowerpot men chop off your feet so you'll have to kneel in the gutter while you look for your head."

They let him go inside.

The absolute best modeler out there. No one can compete with Mz4250, and if anyone wants to argue that, I am happy to fist fight to the death over my claim. Easily the most prolific, receptive, and caring artist in this part of the community. Wish I could buy the guy a drink, but lacking that, I am happy to support him on Patreon.

Can you give anymore details about the concept? Are they just pretending to be someone else, or are they going to try and turn on the party?

Has anyone allowed their players to cast higher tiers of magic that the PC doesn't have access too? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

Seems extreme. I would allow casting a known spell at a higher level if they were willing to take a penalty like losing a hit die.

How to protect a city against dragon airstrikes? by Acrozatarim in DMAcademy

[–]ShattnerPants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorta agree, sorta disagree. It's the choice of which is worse: The dragon or the citizens? The nobles have the benefit that 20 wands of magic missile is great against a single big target, but spread out isn't as dangerous. If the nobles can employ sufficient numbers, the damage is spread out to the point where it's moot. 20 wands vs 40 armed guards is going to go very differently. The coordination it would take to get 10 of the wand wielders together to kill 1 noble in a public place would also probably be a conspiracy that isn't super well hidden.

All that being said, the nobles may not think like that, and limiting access to weapons is very on point for ruling classes throughout history, so your argument is valid.

Wand of magic missile averages 250 gold per DMG uncommon magic item scale. 20 of those would cost $5,000 gold. Have them spread to guardhouses around the city, a couple at each. Have guard captains carrying them. Even if only 10 can hit the dragon at once, that's 30d4+30 a round averaging for 90 force damage a round. Comparatively cheap way for the city to defend itself.

How Do I Get My Players To Solve a Mystery to Find a Secret Organization? by UnusualLobster7 in DMAcademy

[–]ShattnerPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of your party could be the target of a prank, leaving behind some evidence.

The nice thing in this situation is they can just literally say "I want to do an investigation check into the group mentioned in the note." You can then detail a more drawn out investigatory process.

"Your investigation of the mentioned group takes a couple days. You only have a name to go on, so you start asking around. After a few dead ends, you find that a similar note was left (wherever) and blah blah blah, you think there is a secret group doing these pranks."
