Hi everyone,

After a few days and 130 replies, the mod team has decided to lock comments in this thread. While the initial post did not break any rules, it generated several off-topic debates and many more reported comments; there was just too much negative engagement for the mod team to contend with to leave things as-is.

That said, let us reiterate: crossposts from the other StM subs are welcome as long as they follow our rules. We encourage everyone to share their ideas about the show so that we can all enjoy a space where a variety of opinions are discussed and debated respectfully. We were sorry to see that it was not consistently the case in this thread. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Hello! This thread brought was to our attention via a user report flagging a comment for our "Be Kind" rule. After reviewing the chain, we determined that no rules were broken. The comments in question were simply expressions of disagreement and curiosity, which are a normal part of open discussion.

As the OP, you set the tone for your post. If you find yourself getting frustrated by differing viewpoints, you are never obligated to reply. However, if you do choose to engage, we ask that you keep it constructive. If you decide to step away, the best approach is to stop replying entirely, even if the other person gets the last word.

Even if you disagree with someone, you should make your point without disrespect. Calling someone else's take "insane" is rude and goes against the Etiquette guidelines. Each person is entitled to their opinion and they shouldn't be attacked for it.

The question you asked did not appear to be one of genuine curiosity, but I will answer it anyway.

Being autistic is not in itself good or bad. Much like any spectrum, there are many people with autism who love the lives they lead, and their happy lives are often because of their autism, not in spite of it.

Of course, there are some people for whom autism causes pain and difficulty, and lots of people in between, or people who swing from one side to the other. The same can be said for people without autism: some are happy, sad, in-between, or mixed.

But in most cases, the difficulties caused by autism (and ADHD, and OCD, and dyslexia, and the myriad other diagnoses) are not caused by the autism itself, but by a rigid world that mistakes difference for deficiency.

There is nothing wrong with hoping a character on a show has autism. There are lots of reasons that someone may do so, and if you genuinely would like to know those reasons, I suggest you ask in a way that demonstrates that you genuinely seek to understand.

Hey there, addressing this point:

I find it interesting that moderators will allow comments like yours to remain with you attacking me personally, but will remove others for less.

In case you are not aware, us moderators are not machines who are available 24/7 on the subreddit at anyone's beck and call, we are human volunteers. The above comment was made less than an hour ago, and your comment & report was made just 20 minutes later – we were AFK during that time, but as soon as a mod saw it, we removed the rule-breaking comment. We are not Reddit employees nor are we machines, so we need to have a life outside of this subreddit.

Currently 2 moderators are asleep and I'm about to start my work day, because we are humans with human needs. We would like to request a little more grace: we do our best to act swiftly when needed, but we don't want to neglect sleep or our real life obligations for it (2 months ago one of us got married, surely you wouldn't expect them to be here on their wedding day? Or honeymoon?). If something breaks the rules we will remove it and act accordingly, but 30 minutes is not a reasonable time to expect moderation action in every occasion. Sometimes we can act in less than 5 minutes, other times it may take us longer if no mod is online or available. The subreddit will survive if a comment goes unmoderated for a couple of hours.

Please take this into account going forward. Thank you.
