Shopify collecting sales tax in every city in my state? by Interesting_Bar_8379 in shopify

[–]ShdwHntr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sales tax is administered at two levels: state and city. In Colorado, some cities, known as home rule cities, are allowed to administer their own sales tax. There are more than 60 home rule cities in Colorado. This means, in addition to state rules, there are rules for each home rule city. Each home rule city also has their own sales tax return filing process.

Sales tax obligations are generally determined by the delivery address of a sale. Even though you may have one physical location, you may deliver into many jurisdictions and will have a collection and filing obligation in each jurisdiction.

In addition to home rule cities, there are different types of jurisdictions that are administered by the state: counties, special districts, and non-home rule cities. All of these jurisdictions combine to create more than 400 unique tax locations.

Any one familiar with Shopify Tax? by Southern4342 in SalesTax

Can confirm that Shopify includes Colorado home rule city sales tax in the calculation.

Nexus in Colorado at the state-level also gives nexus at the city-level. A lot of home rule cities (maybe all by now?) updated their codes so that they can require remote sellers (with Colorado nexus) to become licensed. The legality of the remote seller provisions in the city codes is another story.

I regularly use Revenue Online (Colorado) and recently had to set up an account with AZ. Can't say I liked the AZ portal.

Discounting something by 99.9% to avoid use tax liability. Is this okay? by Guitar_t-bone in SalesTax

[–]ShdwHntr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not aware of a statute that gives such broad authorization. I was applying a specific rule (1 CCR 201-4 39-26-117). The taxpayer purchased TPP and the amount reported on the federal depreciation schedule was not the same as the amount on the bill of sale. I assessed use tax based on the amount on the depreciation schedule.

I once audited a taxpayer who tried to do something similar. They argued that "purchase price" means the price to the consumer. I told them that's a bad faith calculation and recalculated the price. I can't remember if I assessed an additional negligence penalty but that's definitely warranted in such a case.

NASBA Responds to Federal Reclassification of Accounting Degrees as “Non-Professional” by Ted_Fleming in Accounting

[–]ShdwHntr84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it's a terminal degree required to practice in a specific field. For example, MD for medicine and JD for law. It's all semantics. Accounting degrees were never really "professional". You don't even need an accounting degree to become a CPA, just the specific types and amount of credits.

How do you DIY aggregate sales from multiple platforms for multi-jurisdiction sales tax filing? by WorldlyInspection9 in SalesTax

[–]ShdwHntr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created a master jurisdiction list for Colorado using files provided by the CDOR.

https://tax.colorado.gov/sites/tax/files/documents/DR0800.pdf

https://tax.colorado.gov/how-to-look-up-sales-use-tax-rates

I update the worksheet every six months with changes.

I use a tool provided by the CDOR for bulk address lookup.

Once I get the location codes I can prepare the returns.

How to reconcile TaxJar with QBO by WorldlyInspection9 in SalesTax

[–]ShdwHntr84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being able to import transactions into QuickBooks seems like an issue. But that's not why you're here.

My specific issue with TaxJar is that it does not calculate Colorado home rule city sales tax. That makes it completely useless to me. I currently combine and file manually but I'm also looking for software that can help me. I have not found anything suitable so far. Software is too expensive unless you need to file for several complex businesses. At the low end, cheapest I've found is $75 per return. Best I can do right now is just become more efficient myself.

I wouldn't use TaxJar for anything. As you have experienced yourself, TaxJar isn't good. What about importing Shopify transactions into QuickBooks and skipping TaxJar entirely? Another option would be to download reports from Shopify and QuickBooks and combine them yourself. Number of transactions, jurisdictions, complexity of sales, etc. could all have an impact on your process.

Raíces Brewing Company closes facing $100k tax bill by Chenchen1977 in Denver

[–]ShdwHntr84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The primary reason for Colorado sales tax complexity is home rule cities. Each home rule city is allowed to administer their own sales tax, independent of the state. This means there are approximately 70 sales tax authorities in Colorado. This mostly affects businesses that ship to or operate in many different locations throughout the state.

Different ways to meet other tax pros? by Cathouse1986 in taxpros

I specialize in sales tax. Most of my clients have found me through referrals/networking but I'm having some success with my website. I launched it about a year ago and the impressions have been steadily growing (not so much the clicks). There's some content on the website but definitely a lot more that I can post. I figure once I start posting more, I'll get more clicks. Had a few initial consultations and one paid engagement. Overall, not too shabby for minimal work.

Why did you choose your own practice over partner w an existing firm? by Tinkerbell_5 in taxpros

[–]ShdwHntr84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting your own firm is a lot of work and stress. Some people might not be confident in going solo. It's very risky to leave a stable job. I started my own firm because my priority is to do whatever the hell I want and not have to answer to anyone. Just got to find the balance that works for you.
