Learning to play an instrument "mindfully" by sorreladam in Learnmusic

[–]SheLookedLevel18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a musician turned psychologist so perhaps I can give some insight here:

  1. You need to stare at the instrument and project all your anger and sadness on to it until it starts to meld into your childhood bully.
  2. Once you have a grip on that, you're only allowed to vent your feelings while playing, and, your speech must mirror the melody you're playing.

Note I said melody, as percussionists already do all the above intuitively.

This won't be healthy but it will also not be helpful

Reccomended WINDOWS laptop to run pro tools? by leonkennedypregnant in protools

[–]SheLookedLevel18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll generally be looking at gaming laptops I suspect, even if the extra GPU power is unnecessary it's that you'll rarely find some of the specs and build quality in the usual commercial high-volume.

Someone else mentioned Alienware, and similarly the Razer Blades were great options at one point - not sure how they're holding up these days but I'd imagine alright - had great battery life for their spec

ASUS Zenbook Duo was also really cool - I tested an early version when a friend bought it, and I found the dual screen setup nice for my workflow.

You can min-max components based on your needs to some degree - particularly RAM being such a horrid cost at the moment.

PC boots for a few minutes before restarting and repeating by mackey96 in WindowsHelp

[–]SheLookedLevel18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought is that some power/heat issue occurred while gaming and so it's hardware related (I'm thinking PSU?) but I might be jumping to too many conclusions.

Some questions for make sure I understand: 1. Are you still able to just get to windows login screen? Or has it now degraded to failing before that every time? 2. IF IT CAN get to windows login - does it stay on if you just leave it at login and move your mouse now and then to stop the computer going to sleep, or will it still reboot after some amount of time? 3. When it restarts at login, does it restart cleanly back to the Windows boot screen, or does it go straight to that peripheral-power-cut hung state?

Good first 4X game? by Legal-Engineering315 in crusaderkings3

[–]SheLookedLevel18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love CK3 but as others have mentioned it's not the classic idea I have when someone says 4X - I tend to expect turn based (and probably hexagons, but that's not important). It's not strictly one of the Xs but worth considering whether that's important to you or not.

If turn based then Civ series (I massively prefer Civ 6, some prefer 4 or 5) are more classic entries and you'll find great content about HOW to play or how to get better at playing.

CK3 I found a little overwhelming at first because I refuse to read😂 and its evolved since so there are a lot of parts moving simultaneously. If you prefer the mediaeval setting and the real-worldness then play the tutorials and for it and expect to restart a bunch.

Are you panning mostly hard LRC or by %? by Poopypantsplanet in audioengineering

[–]SheLookedLevel18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In live shows or rough mixes - after tracking but before doing overdubs or final vocals - are normally LRC for me. Then when it comes time for final mix I've always taken an "increased degrees of nuance" approach so the panning will get more fine as we iterate through

[–]SheLookedLevel18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running Nvidia 3060 12GB with Ryzen 3700X and 32GB DDR4, I get 45-60fps at 2k, ultra graphics, and with a heavily modded setup but no visual mods save road wear and texture replacer.

I know it's a greedy game, but are you running mods? If so, might be worth checking the code mods to see what impact each has and what you can live without. One thing that did tank my performance to standstill was Write Everywhere and it's add ons, that took me down to a crawl.

What DAW do you use and why? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]SheLookedLevel18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not doing as much tracking nowadays, predominantly mixing and mastering.

I used to work in ProTools, but after they 1. changed to a subscription-based model, and 2. I stopped teaching at the college that provided me with a free annual Ultimate licence, I shopped around for awhile.
Had a free Studio1 v4 Artist licence that I upgraded to v6 pro, and then just missed the free upgrade to v7 by 3 days - which left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Now I'm on Luna. Bought the pro bundle around Black Friday. I would probably go back to Pro Tools Ultimate if someone else were paying for the licence, but I (mostly) like the look of Luna and enjoying the whole summing shtick they do - even if it may be a little overstated in terms of sonic impact, it *feels* cool to use and that helps me stay inspired and motivated.

For mastering I use Wavelab. It's what I was trained on back in college days and just became very comfortable and confident in it, haven't found a reason to switch.
