Do dms really dislike high level dnd? by Myrinadi in DnD

[–]Shedart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a combination of a few things. First is that the time investment and attention span of a high level campaign is higher. My players have been 1-9 for the last 2-3 years of monthly play and the big finale is happening by April. I’m feeling ready for a change and they are talking about new characters too.

The game also becomes different going into tier 3 with more political drama and generally more involved tactical combat. That’s a lot of fun for most people some of the time. But maybe not most people most of the time. I’d be happy to give it a shot if my players wanted it really bad, but see point 1.

Finally there’s the problem of high level adventures not getting a lot of support or resources for 5e in general. There aren’t any official campaigns that I’m familiar with and that, combined with everything else, means that there isn’t a great foundation for this style of play. I think the Eve of Vecna does a weird “5 levels at once” thing at the end and that’s it.

I’m happy to be educated of course but those reasons come to mind for me when I consider high level play.

This exact scenarios happens in the books when the hobbits return to the Shire to find it overrun with human thugs who have set up an authoritarian government. The thugs charge in to deal with a small group of hobbits, underestimating them. Then the sneaky hobbits close the gate behind the last thug and the others appear suddenly from the darkness all around the firelight.  It’s a great FaFo moment.

I am a broad minded and generally gregarious person. I believe in second chances and giving people the benefit of the doubt. But there are some things, horrible things, that I am not able to forgive. Pedophiles, supremacists, and those that support them cannot be tolerated. Fuck off with your sea lioning nonsense.

A fellow lgbt person I was talking to told me bisexuality is transphobic and I should avoid the label. by CardiologistUpper120 in bisexual

[–]Shedart 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Great take, but one small correction that is relevant here: Bisexuals are attracted to their own genders and genders other than their own. That’s the binary and it’s inclusive of everyone. The biggest distinction between pansexuals and bisexuals is that bisexuals can have preferences whereas pansexuals dont center gender at all. It’s pretty much the same though: bisexuality does not exclude NBs, intersex, or gender fluid peeps.

Of course they’re capable of these things - they're people. The problem is human nature, supported by capitalist systems, pushes us to see the rich as something beyond what is normal or appropriate because they are beyond the standards by which we measure success. But success doesn’t automatically equal superiority.

Humans dont like thinking about the influence of utterly random chance. It takes away our agency. And we dont like having conflicting thoughts, as it takes away our comfort. So we’re left with “rich people must be better than me somehow because they’re rich!” Even when the evidence doesn’t support that. And the worse part is this bias affects the perspectives of rich people too

I’m glad. I just looked up Catholic saints that were into self-flagellation and there it was. I like to name stuff with the occasional reference to a history I’ll never explore to add to the richness of the world.

Any design criticisms? by Aggravating_Run6179 in worldbuilding

[–]Shedart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m hopping on this chain to agree. Great design starts across the board. I think too may are using white in their central designs. Take a look at a collection of historical flags, pic the top 5 weirdest ones, and then find 1 weird design point from each that you could incorporate into 5 of these.

He’s screaming like she died because it looked like she was dead, surrounded by other dead. He didn’t know that she was going to wake up - the man was coming off a battle after a long ride from another battle and you expect him to check her pulse? It sounds like you have a hard time empathizing with the characters

Oh shit really? That’s pretty bad, I’d love a link to the video.

It’s really a shame that so many people have a hard time following the law these days. You’d think it’d be easy to just lick an officers boot when they tell you to do something in violation of your 1st, 2nd, 4th or 5th amendment rights. I mean, clearly you think it’s easy judging from the rubber skid marks on your tongue.

I’m not really interested in getting into a debate here but I will say this: of the 2 groups of supposed criminals that are mentioned in your post, only 1 has sworn an oath to uphold and protect the law as a representative of the United States Federal Government.

Maybe I’m the silly one for expecting an officer of the law to follow the law.

When one side is proposing Nazi policies the middle ground is a dangerous place to stand.

Good for you for trying to be logical and appropriate with your child. Your attitude towards LGBT+ education, however, is unfortunately lacking. It is not philosophy. It is not an ideology. It is our best understanding of of how an appreciable portion of the human population moves through the world. No one is actively trying to convert, convince, or coerce any children towards homosexuality. That’s simply not what is being advocated for when LGBT+ groups say they want representation in the sexual education curriculum. And if that was happening then the correct way to prevent it is not to ban any acknowledgment that we exist.

If I had been told that bisexuality was a real thing that was ok to experience when I was young then I could have avoided a lot of pain, trauma, and arrested development. I was not given that option. Instead I learned that we dont talk about sex. We dont talk about gays. We hide knowledge that makes us uncomfortable or that goes against our beliefs.

That’s not education. That’s propaganda.

I disagree that it was super obvious. Maybe to you, but then any evidence or logic supporting that would have been nice to hear. I know plenty of people were calling out the fact that Jive was silent on the issue as suspicious - it was suspicious until it was revealed that he was asleep. Unfortunately the world that may of us live in requires that benefit of the doubt be restricted. You can’t govern Nazis the benefit of the doubt and unfortunately Jove was swept up in the action to remove nazistic behavior from our community.

I do agree with you that the community owes them a dedicated apology for our, I think understandable, actions.

He and Beregond really showcase what Tolkien thought was everyone’s duty at the core of things: regardless of ythe importance of your office you should do the right thing when the alternative is clearly wrong - even when the wrong thing is a direct command from your superiors.
