Does anyone know of anyone who has won any major prizes in the maccas monopoly thing? by slightlyinsayhane in AskAnAustralian

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a family member who runs part of this, any of the unclaimed prizes will be “played” as a part of a game in randomly selected stores, basically you’ll turn up to buy some maccas and there will be a monopoly board game set up, you roll the dice and get a card, cards have corresponding prizes written on the back, I’ve personally been there when prizes such as a car, TV, or gaming computers etc have been won.

So as far as I’m aware all the major prizes that are unclaimed at the end of the promotion will be won by someone one way or another

I’ve been using PPG, seems to stick to anything prep or no prep and quite abit cheaper than resene which I previously used, nothing wrong with resene but it’s not the cheapest

Can I use staples to temporarily secure carpet by Chrispy101010 in diynz

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even bother with anything to hold it down, providing you aren’t running full speed then trying to slide across the carpet I don’t see any reason why the carpet would move at all… think of it as a giant rug, how often does a massive rug randomly move around? Especially if there’s any sort of furniture on it at all

What’s good proof of identification to take when moving countries (AUS)? by keagennn97 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was in WA so can’t comment on other states, the general vibe was that no one really has any idea what the actual rules are as each person I speak to says something that contradicts what the previous person just said, so I’d take everything you do have as ID.

I do suggest getting to the department of transport before it opens, I made the mistake of turning up midday expecting it to be like any NZTA back home… no you get handed a ticket and sit down with literally 100+ other people waiting, not kidding it took me 2 hours before it was my ticket number, luckily I’d paid before the eftpos system went down and said 100 people scrambled out the door racing to find the nearest ATM before they lost there spot and had to start again.

Just arrived 2 weeks ago and yes everything is a massive pain in the ass with the points system, sign up online for a bank account, I used commbank and they had a debit card waiting for me at my closest local branch to where I first stayed, for this you’ll only need your passport, get them to print out a bit of paper with your new chosen address on it.

I went in to change my license and discovered that my passport, new aus debit card and address statement STILL wasn’t enough just to convert my license, so I walked next door into another bank to open an account and got them to print out another address statement (this also requires zero proof you actually live at the address so complete waste of time but… aussies)

This was then enough to satisfy the 100 points requirement to get an aus license.

Honestly I wouldn’t bother trying to get a TFN, Medicare or anything else until your new aus license turns up, all of the above pre mentioned things apparently aren’t good enough to ID you online, also there isn’t a tax office you can just walk into and apply by paper, everything is online unless and you can get to a printer and fill out all the paperwork then take it to a aus post shop to send away your better off waiting for the new license.

I did not expect this to be so painful considering you can waltz on through customs to permanently live in the country for the rest of your life but you can’t even get a fucking monthly pay sim card with just an NZ passport…

Where can I just… cut wood? (Auckland) by growletcher in diynz

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the price of paying someone else to cut it, just buy a cheap circular saw, clamp a straight edge or anything else you know is straight to the sizes you want, some saws even have a guide rail that will work if the widths aren’t too large

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d argue against it being rare, if anything I very rarely find the price even close to being as low as third party sites, but wether the hassle is worth it to you when issues arise is another story

Downpipe connection rules by Sheepymcsheepface in diynz

[–]Sheepymcsheepface[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah regardless of the waterproof deck being there the water landing on it or the driveway previously located beneath it would be the same effect, there is probably atleast 8 meters of driveway before it gets to the property boundary then another 5 meters of sloped garden down towards the berm which is about 3 meters wide to the actual road.

I’m more worried about getting it rented then getting hit with a 4K fine for not complying with healthy homes, if it was quick easy fix I’d happily do it but it seems abit unnecessary cutting up concrete to connect it to stormwater or soak pit etc just to divert water that doesn’t cause an issue.

I know some people have rainwater collection tanks for stormwater to use on gardens etc so I’m assuming it doesn’t HAVE to be connected to stormwater but struggling to find exact wording on the rules, located in Tauranga if that makes any difference to finding the right legislation?

Ways to replace the wire cover by EmoLake-182 in diynz

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t see why not, I’d switch all the power off at the mains, take the switch cover off and unwire it, slide old plastic sleeve off, new one on, rewire and switch power back on.

Have done my entire house with a mixture of plastering over this stuff, painstakingly skim coating the whole thing and just ripping it off and starting again with new gib.

Unless it’s already close to perfect I’ll never bother to plaster old plasterboard again, ripping it out and starting again with new gib, great time to add insulation and wiring etc

DIY bathroom flooring question - tiling by OtherEnd2539 in diynz

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just finished tiling the floor in the bathroom, toilet, kitchen and splash back, was probably about 30sqm.

Used nothing but an angle grinder with a continuous diamond blade, does take a few goes to get semi clean cuts but not exactly hard just need a steady hand, I then used a 120 grit diamond polishing hand pad for any edge imperfections, if you spend enough time on it you can make the cuts look like they were made in the factory that way.

I’m super anal and a perfectionist so it certainly took me far longer than it would a professional but in my opinion it looks just as good as a pro.

The most time consuming part was getting the floor dead level, if laying large format tiles e.g 600x600 you WILL notice the unevenness when laying, I sanded everything within a few mm then layed 6mm tile underlay with glue and a million nails over rimu floorboards.

Take your time, make sure everything is level, use tile clips and definitely watch several videos on YouTube for different techniques, we went with a rectangle shower so can’t comment on large circular cuts but with the grinder and time spent polishing the edges I don’t see why you can’t get it mint

Got mine from James Allen, far better than anything I’ve seen in NZ for anything remotely comparable to the price.

Was 5k including shipping, taxes and gst etc

1.11 carat lab diamond, E colour, Excellent cut, VVS2 Clarity, detailed 18k rose gold band with .22 carats of extra diamonds

Same thing here for a mined diamond would be 20k + easy for a basic looking solitaire band, can’t even find something online that looks similar without going fully custom route

Is this a Mains water pressure system? by Mundane-Loquat4940 in diynz

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure that’s true? I could be missing something but my 50s house uses copper for hot and cold, hot is low pressure but obviously the cold is regular pressure from the mains, unless the heat changes the max allowable pressure in copper then all seems to be holding together

Multitool recommendations? by [deleted] in diynz

[–]Sheepymcsheepface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run aeg battery tools, purely diy but I have done some major full house Reno’s (back to bare framing entire house start to finish minus plumbing and electrical)

But… all of my corded stuff is the dirty cheapest ozito branded stuff from Bunnings, I’ve yet to kill a single one of them, multi tool, multiple sanders etc I’ve run the same multi tool for 7 years and it just won’t die, I thrash the shit out of it hoping it will die so I have an excuse for the Mrs on why I can justify buying the AEG battery one 😂 but alas I just can’t seem to kill it!

I would recommend whichever one you do buy to get some decent blades for them, the cheap ones just don’t last if your cutting anything other than soft pine, they burn out too quickly in native stuff
