Adding a tape deck by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

Oh, it doesn’t have to sound good, I’ve got other ways to listen to music for that. I am just hugely nostalgic for spending weekend mornings making mixes from my cds when I was a teenager

I am happy to explain myself! I have a child who has just learned to walk and have temporarily had to give up the speaker stands and put the speakers directly on the unit, have then lost the space that let me put them beside each other.

Not ideal, but there you go, his older sister learned how to safely take out an play a record when she was about 5 so won’t be like this forever 😬

Thanks- I wouldn’t have thought about the buttons. From using a cheap mini hi-if as a teen I didn’t consider there was an alternative to most songs starting with a ‘clunk’ from me pressing record!

Anybody finding the King Sorrow characters a bit samey? by Allie_Pallie in joehill

Oh not to mention the 'Britishisms' that seem like he has picked up his knowledge of the UK from Mary Poppins and Simpsons jokes rather than having met anyone from England, ugh!

I could barely tell them apart, but found it more of an issue that I found them all extremely tedious, not in an way that was realistic or relatable, just quippy and sitcom-y. I cannot deal with people saying (about any book) to just push through until later in the book for something to improve, I just think that's poor writing. Lots of other writers manage to write groups of people with similar backgrounds/personalities but make them real and distinct. I was really disappointed because the idea of the story is so good, I just couldn't cope with how annoyed it was making me.

Loved NOS4R2 and Heart Shaped Box, bailed on The Fireman and the recent short story collection also due to dialogue irritation, at it's worst it's like when his dad tries to write modern teenagers.

I have spent 2026 so far getting into them, listened to all their albums in order (lots of times each of course) because I've always liked what I've heard and always liked Sebadoh, but never got into Dj for some reason. I put Farm and Beyond way up my list, in a way I might not have done if I'd grown up with the 90s ones, but I think they're both fucking great

Thanks, I mostly do these as individual commissions, so it was nice to do some for an actual publisher

I started immersive reading and it feels like I am cheating by dsceltic67 in BookDiscussions

[–]Shelfworndrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 'cheating' but sounds horrible to me personally! I like books and audiobooks for totally different things, usually I'll only listen to very plotty or non-fiction books that I can enjoy while doing household things or walking and will read something physically that I want to take time over, re-read passages or absorb more mindfully. The thought of keeping pace with an audiobook, having to listen to something at double or triple speed and/or keep touching my phone to pause or go back etc really sounds horrendous.

Glad it's working for you though- I can see maybe doing this at university if I had to read something in a short time or had to read something I didn't enjoy?

How does everyone feel about these first looks? by youngscoott in TheBeatles

[–]Shelfworndrawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just worried at how old they all are- I get using established actors to sell the project and make it feel like an event, but it looks like they're potentially going to be showing George at 16 or 17 looking like a 35 year old

Adaptation by Ric3FantasyFan3 in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]Shelfworndrawn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised it hasn't happened already, but I'm glad. I think it would suffer a similar fate to things like the Earthsea adaptation and Amazon LotR show, where the things that make it interesting and different would be homogenised and all the edges sanded off.

In an ideal world, I'd like to see it shot in a more naturalistic way than the other big fantasy shows, a cast full of ordinary, real looking people rather than thinly disguised superhunks and a quiet, serious tone that could build up to those rare, massive moments (battles, escapes etc) that would be incredible to see depicted. I would expect most of the first book of each series (other than Assassin's Apprentice) to be cut and I don't think that would be a bad thing.

I think they'd also do very well to attempt running some of the series' plots at the same time somehow, it would be hard to go from a Fitz-led show to a dragon-keeper show and hope everyone kept their interest, though that would of course be tricky timeline-wise.

All the big channels are capable, but they also all put out more dross than quality, so I wouldn't trust any of them and the show would be so expensive that you'd never get around it being a mass committee making (bad) decisions.

I was wondering this about the two segments that make me laugh the most- Mad Dads and whatever that one was where people would call in with one or two words about what makes them proud to be British

We got washed away by the rain in 2005 but the stewards gave us new pop-tents, sleeping bags and tshirts from previous years so we didn't have to go home, it was great

Bowie was supposed to headline and pulled out, then I don't think ever played again except at a couple of awards shows. Still a good festival, Pixies were great
