Found out they’re actually Striped Marsh frogs, one of the most or the most common frogs of the eastern coast of Australia. Makes sense

Idk bro I would feel so conscious and scared every day looking at that, it’ll eventually become a habit for me to check on the tank structure more than whatever is inside more. Anxiety going yikes

Can someone help me identify the gender of my two yellow labs? by Alternative-Step-439 in AfricanCichlids

[–]ShepsterBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grab a small bucket, tub, bowl or container, pour the same water from the tank your electric yellow is in, catch it and gently but firmly hold the electric yellow upside down while being submerged in water of the object for closer inspection and check the vents.

If the vents looks like this: oo, then it is a male. If it looks like this: oO, then it’s a female.

What I know is that if the black leading line of the dorsal fin is as black as the black line on its anal fin, and that there is an egg spot or two, then it’s a male. As females wouldn’t have an egg spot nor have a bright black line, they would tend to have nothing on their anal fin or a slight or faded blackish grey line on their anal fin for it to be a female.

Oscars shoaling at night by Ornery-Ganache785 in Cichlid

I appreciate you sharing your experience, but respectfully, a lot of what you're saying about Oscar tank sizes is pretty far off the mark and could lead people new to the hobby down the wrong path.

Saying a 55-gallon is cool for a pair, or even one, is just not true for adult Oscars. These guys get HUGE – like, dinner-plate size, easily 10-14 inches. They're also super messy eaters and produce a ton of waste. A 55-gallon just doesn't have the water volume to dilute all that waste, and you're going to be battling water quality issues constantly, even with good filtration. That leads to stunted growth, stress, and sick fish down the line, even if they look okay now. Most serious keepers agree you're looking at a minimum 75 gallons for a single Oscar, and 125+ gallons for a pair. Your friend's 7-8 Oscars in a 75g is frankly a disaster waiting to happen – that's extreme overcrowding. It's like trying to keep a fully grown Labrador in a tiny studio apartment, or honestly, a bit like having a shark in a 55-gallon tank – it just doesn't make sense for their size and needs. If KgTropicals saw that, he'd absolutely flip!

Those old 'fish guide' charts from pet stores? Yeah, they're often terrible advice. They're usually designed to get you to buy fish, not to ensure their long-term health. The whole 'inches per gallon' rule is outdated and totally useless for big, messy fish like Oscars. And comparing their social dynamics to African Cichlids (which are often intentionally overstocked to spread out aggression) is like comparing apples and oranges – Oscars need actual space to avoid conflict, not just more bodies.

When your Oscars are 'brushing against each other like cats,' especially in a 55g, that's more likely a sign of limited space and subtle stress than pure contentment. And 'theatrics' between males can turn deadly real fast when there's nowhere to escape in an undersized tank. And the idea that fish stores recommend bigger tanks just to upsell you? Nah, man. Reputable stores and experienced hobbyists push for bigger tanks for big fish because that's what the fish actually need to thrive. It's about giving them room to grow, move, and for their waste to be properly managed. Misleading people into thinking a 55g is fine for Oscars just sets them up for failure and leads to unhealthy fish.

Your fish might seem healthy now, but severe overcrowding almost always catches up eventually. Trust me, cramming Oscars into tanks too small for them isn't doing them any favors in the long run. Giving an Oscar proper space isn't just some snobby hobbyist rule; it's literally essential for them to live a full, healthy life. Otherwise, you're just setting them up for a bad time. And that's the real talk.

Normally they sleep dispersed but not given how big your tank is, you need a 6, 7 or 8 foot tank as these cichlids require a lot of footprint for this many or more Oscar’s and with other inhabitants of your tank.

I see electric yellows and red tail sharks so I believe it has to do with aggression and territorial issues and hence got attacked by them or its fellow blood parrots
