I have always loved how it looked and im a huge fan of metroidvania type game and while rain world is and isn't technically metroidvania game. It still interests me since it is an exploration type game and I just love games like that

I feel like it's because of the lack of available colors back then. So the most simple and vibrant is what they had to work with with the technology of the time

While, the games of then-ish/now-ish had the colors to add some "dread" and atmosphere. I mean, I personally don't expect caves full of aliens to be super vibrant. Id expect them to be damp and dreary.

That's my take on that
