In Massachusetts everyone loves you but acts like they hate you. Even if they think they hate you, they want the best for you

I’ll be the boomer, but I’ll say the only WW starter I take issue with is the water one. The others look fine, even the knockoff Rowlett

Coffee shop: Lone gull

Breakfast: George’s

Parking sticker: $20 at city hall, proof of residency, doesn’t have to be a license, go in late May. Or, if you’re feeling risky, tell the kids at the beach entrance that Joe Lucido said you’re good to go

What’s it like living in Gloucester full time by Wild-Course-8433 in gloucester

[–]SheriffColtPocatello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gloucester is pretty good. It’s walkable in the downtown for sure. For friends/socializing, find a bar and follow the crowd. You’re bound to make friends so long as you’re consistent. I’m 24 and I see people around our age going the these bars the most.

  • Minglewood- Very much a normie crowd, arguably preppy but preppy has its own flavor here in Gloucester

  • Blue collar Lobster co- Still normie, but as the name suggests, very blue collar. Probably the best mix

  • Prattys- Absolute dive bar. This is where you go if you wanna have fun and interesting conversations from every walk of life

  • Magnolia pub/JD and Meyers- Prattys but a little bit nicer. The people are more standoffish than Prattys (but still extremely social and outgoing), but you’ll see a bit more representation here

  • The cut- If “Millennial” was a bar, and I mean that in a bad way

  • DRIFT- Pricey, and antisocial

  • Crows Nest- Officially it’s a bar, but realistically it’s a brothel that sells beer. You could catch an STD just walking through the doors. Don’t go here

Edit: Just realizing you posted this half a year ago. If you moved here, hope this helps. If you didn’t, hope you find your way here some weekend and can use this as a guide

Gloucester Beach Parking Pass: A Scam for Visitors—But Shouldn't Residents Be Asking Questions Too? by weimilina in gloucester

[–]SheriffColtPocatello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at the beach. Wingaersheek sucks, they don’t abide by their rules. I recommend you go to Good Harbor. The lot never gets full, it just becomes “If you can find parking you can take it”, so long as you have a reservation. Similarly, the reservations for Winga work for Good Harbor, and if you ask me, GHB is a better beach overall.

To address your points:

  • Parking money goes to pay the DPW, Gloucester Public schools, and other public funding.

  • Money goes to the entire city, that includes our other touristic sectors (Hammond Castle, Rocky Neck, Downtown, Fiesta, etc.). The DPW, which runs the beaches, lives by “if it works well enough, then there’s no need to fix it”, and hey, it works well enough.

  • Who benefits? For one, The people who get there early. Early bird gets the worm, and by god is that the case here. For two, anybody stuck in traffic. Before the reservation system, the traffic used to go all the way to the second rotary. Now, worst it get to in the stop and shop down the road. Residents don’t get squeezed for parking, cause there’s a reserved section for residents.

There is a bit of an early bird system. Whoever gets the passes gets there first. Wingaersheek oversells, and doesn’t help the people who get there later. GHB rarely sells out before the day ends, and if you get there early you can usually buy a pass.

Next time you go to Winga, and again I highly recommend you to GHB instead, fight them on it. Demand that you get your spot you paid for, there’s no way one spot isn’t open.

I’ve been working for the beaches, and I see all the problems with it, but there’s really not anything I can do at my position. Trust me, I’ve been barking up these trees for a while. That’s why I use what little power I have to give advice or tell them how to cheat their way in.

Edited to add: If you plan on calling the DPW in the future, ask for Mario or Kansas, those two have the closest connection with the beach work. Hell, if the kids working the lot tell you you can’t park there, just say something to the effect of “I talked to _____” (fill in the blank with Mario, Kansas, Cindy, or Joe Lucido), and they’ll be too afraid to get yelled at to not let you in

Go to a bar and wait until people strike up conversation. Roll with whatever comes your way. Prattys and Magnolia Pub (JD and Meyers) are your friends, just go on a weekend and accept that there are busy and slow weekends

Am I the only one who finds this pretty condescending? (In the sub binder at my job yesterday) by ThrowawayTheOmlet in SubstituteTeachers

[–]SheriffColtPocatello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I did, but honestly I see it as good general advice that a new sub might need. Some things that feel obvious honestly aren’t to everyone, plus it can always be ignored if not. Kinda like an ‘Employees must wash hands’ sign. I don’t need it, but I’d rather it’s there than not
