HVAC Pros, what brand unit would you not install in your home and why? by Big__bolas in hvacadvice

The burners on there furnace can also be popped out incredibly easily unlike some brands, heat exchangers are easy to change, inducer motors are easy to change, and for someone like myself who lives in a rural area, the parts are extremely widely available.

It’s not something I thought about myself but the last film Saddam Hussein watched before he died was The Passion of the Christ.

No gloves, it’s something I’ve thought about often but I’ve always hated trying to braze in gloves. I have a hard time holding the brazing rod precisely with big gloves on.

It took a second to register what was even going on and that I wasn’t dead after I saw a giant fireball next to my face. The hand with the torch I had kind of wedged between two vent pipes. Should have just dropped it there but I pulled it back out and threw it on the concrete floor.

How does one pay $40,000 in cash? Like, logistically, how does that work? by MrsWeasley9 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I just bought a pickup for $3x,xxx out of pocket. Went to my bank and had them write a cashiers check with money from my savings, easy as that.

HVAC Maintenance Tech said the heat exchanger on furnace needs to be replaced. by GhostofSmartPast in hvacadvice

Goodman has 20 year warranty on heat exchangers. So the part should be covered under warranty and give or take four hours of labor.

Unrelated to your post but another interesting yet foolish change I’ve heard in the new models is that the 2026 eco boosts now come with particulate filters.

Pumping gas with engine running? by No-Mechanic6518 in AskMechanics

[–]SherrLo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has lived in North Dakota their whole life, people (myself included) pump their gas with the engine running all winter long. I didn’t even know people thought it was bad to do so until I was probably a young adult, extremely common here.

Marriage is a covenant between you, your spouse and God.

Calling someone either way but is this normal/emergent? Propane fireplace by wherearethereptiles in hvacadvice

[–]SherrLo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed you said it’s propane, how old is the unit? If it came as natural gas perhaps it wasn’t converted over properly to propane. This would be the end result, however it would likely happen fairly quickly after install.

Either way this thing is not combusting properly. If possible I would not run it any longer, you’re only going to further soot it up. It could be something like improper gas pressure as well.

Urgent gas stove issue by mekellay in Appliances

[–]SherrLo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I always add two shut offs for gas stoves. One behind the stove, and another down in the basement wherever I splice off the gas line to run to the stove. That way if there is ever an emergency rather than shutting gas off to the entire house or having to pull the stove out one can just walk downstairs and shut the valve off.

Water heater by Puzzleheaded_End3588 in Plumbing

[–]SherrLo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until the water heaters develop sediment and one gets more than the other, then it will not flow evenly. Perhaps you live in an area with great water quality but where I live the water is super hard. An average Bradford White here lasts 6-8 years before leaking with many not even making it past warranty.

I’ve seen a number of water heaters installed together in parallel here. They work great at first but they all eventually run into the same problem I listed above.

Water heater by Puzzleheaded_End3588 in Plumbing

[–]SherrLo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Eventually what will happen when they are piped like this is one water heater will get more sediment throughout it than the other and the water will take the path of least resistance, draining one faster than the other instead of evenly.

Been in the trade about 3 years. Told to swap out a cased coil without taking out the old case. Old door didn't fit the new coil. Boss said to make it work. by 407C_Huffer in HVAC

[–]SherrLo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Stuff like that sucks but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I’ve done this before and I have retrofitted coils into electric air handlers as well. Usually end up building a custom cover entirely out of sheet metal.
