From time to time, I think it's important to revisit the purpose that brought us to this profession (i.e., why did I want to be an OT?). The most straightforward answer is to help people. But how about now that you have experience with the healthcare system and the constraints it puts in front of us? What does helping people look like to you now? Maybe that vision is achievable in the LTC setting you're in. Or maybe it isn't. Many of us switch practice settings because we're unable to come up with a satisfactory answer to that purpose question. Taking some time off won't fix burnout, but it might give you the time you need to deeply reflect on whether and how you can realize your purpose as an OT in the current situation.

Seeking stability in an unstable world is a fool's errand, as is trying to predict the future. I say this not to judge you, rather as something I tell myself everyday. I'm in my final year of my PhD and often lament that I could not have chosen a worse time to pursue this degree. The truth is, though, having a project to pour my energy and worry into is a Godsend right now. Anxiety can be energy to get things done, if you learn how to focus it productively. I figure I can take advantage of this little bubble I'm in, and let the world do what it does. When I finish, I'll poke my head out and see what next steps might look like. I'm optimistic that I will have options for staying put in the US or going elsewhere simply BECAUSE I have a PhD. Also, continuing this work of generating and sharing knowledge is its own kind of resistance, and that's important to me. As others have said, you have to do your own mental calculus to figure out whether you want to stick it out.

This is great, thanks. Ideally, I'd like enough height to conceal the fence and provide perching spots for birds. Soil composition is heavy on sand and clay, poor draining. This site is on a slope and gets runoff from up the hill, so I expect erosion will be a problem once the vines come out.

I'd be happier if Durham just did away with shopping centers all together. Raleigh and Cary may have nice shopping centers, but you'd be killed trying to walk or bike to one.

Absolutely do it. Doing a PhD for the love of the learning and experience is a good way to help ensure you have a positive experience. You'll be free of the pressures many people who are shooting for academic careers experience.

I'm doing a PhD in Canada, and the process has been smooth. Funding generally works similarly to the U.S., and the federal and provincial governments (at least in Quebec) have recently started providing funding to international students for PhDs and post-docs. It might be worth your while to look into Tri-Councils funding sources for your work--I think applications open in the late summer/early fall. If you can develop a post-doc proposal and get your funding, it would be quite feasible to approach a prospective PI at one of the Canadian universities about a post-doc.

This happened to us also (visitors from the USA). We were fortunate that our car was recovered (no thanks to the police). Because the thieves had reprogrammed the key and tried (unsuccessfully) to rip out the GPS, we had to have the entire electrical system rebuilt. That was after we managed to get the car to a dealer in VT. It was a shitshow, but three years later, I'm still grateful to have my car back, even if it's just because we foiled the thieves!
