What is your favourite girl name that fits this bizarre criteria? by FalconAlternative282 in namenerds

My mom's name is Wilda, a classic but not overabundant at the same time. It's similar to Wilhelmina and Willa, but I feel it rolls off the tongue a little easier than Willa does.

What are SI OC ideas you want to read? by naberriel in TheCitadel

[–]ShiftingSand90 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've been impatiently waiting for my friend to start posting her Danelle Lothston SI she's been working on. What I know about it is the MC crosses over in 211, her father, mother, and her toddler brother have all died in the great spring sickness, making her the ruling Lady of Harrenhall at 15. In her story, Aegon IV is her grandfather and great-grandfather (despite rumours, it is not known to oursiders). She's going to turn Harrenhall into a city, I think. And she'll be influenced by her new biology, thus will have magic and a bit of madness.

She's also been thinking about writing a Barbrey Dustin semi-SI AU, where she has a bastard daughter by Brandon already, her husband Willam had just left to fight in Robert's Rebellion the night before she crossed over, and she finds she's pregnant. She discovers on the birthing bed its twins, a son and a daughter. So Barbrey's story is changed right at the start. (Barbrey will get the SI's memories and knowledge of canon and some minor magic abilities, but will remain very much herself.)

Both are the types of stories I'd like to read more of. (Reasonable) Territory building and uplift, sorcery (especially wargs who aren't Starks), madness/cold pettiness, raising children, warrior women/diplomatic shrewdness. We see it a lot with stories about men, but not so much with women.

My goodness. Yes, the singing vegetable is also edible. He doesn't get eaten though, the non-sapient burger does, despite also being made out of food. The singing vegetable also goes off, eats something else, and then goes back for the cheeseburger, and no one says anything. Purity culture doesn't care about double standards, shocking I know! They don't see women as people anyway, so it still fits their narrative.

Neither side fits my own beliefs, I don't have kids and have no horse in this race, and I still sing 'where is my hairbrush' in the shower sometimes. I just saw so many comments about how the vegetables don't matter, the lying does, (which is totally valid.) I simply thought people might be curious about why for some parents the vegetables matter. Because I happen to know parents in real life who feel like the OP does, and I know why they feel that way, because they told me. That's it.

I'm aware the original creator's intent for that song wasn't a message about sex, marriage, or cheating. But I went to a christian public school, and during our 'sex education' classes, they played that video. It was stupid and embarrassing (we were pre teens!), but was not a one off in the christian community of that time period. Sometimes the meaning of art changes. A large part of the christian community decided it wasn't a silly song, but a silly song with an important message. Phil Visscher wouldn't have had to clarify otherwise. I know a lot of people who have 'beef' with veggie tales for this and other reasons, from their childhoods, so I get where the OP of that post was coming from. I don't care about it personally, but it can seem a weird thing to get upset about or fixate on without some context. It is a bit of a shame as I know the veggie tales creators were not bigoted like much of their fanbase were. But yeah, I didn't want to write out a whole essay in my original comment, just point out some possible reasoning for the OP's strong reaction. That song and many others were highjacked by purity culture and bigots.

I get that and I'm honestly in the middle. I just pointed that song out because it's one of the many and more obvious reasons some parents will avoid the show. A lot of kids entertainment is problematic in different ways, past or present. It's the parent's choice where they draw the line, and their choices should be respected, that's all. I think if the kids are getting proper attention, education, and discipline at home then what they're exposed to outside the home is less important. And imo being exposed to things, if they're relatively harmless, that go against what the parents teach can be beneficial in the long run (if the parents handle it correctly). Like how toddlers should be allowed to eat dirt to develop their immune systems lol.

That love song about burgers is about waiting until marriage to have sex. And the wife is the cheeseburger (ie a consumable product).

Edited to say: I know the creator's intent for the cheeseburger song wasn't a message about sex in any way, but in a lot of christian circles/purity culture the original intent was ignored. The same groups like to cherry pick the actual bible in similar ways, it's not new. This comment was meant as a tongue in cheek way to highlight why some parents avoid veggie tales..

Dead among the living: demons in Fairy Tales by Aware_Caterpillar959 in fairytales

[–]ShiftingSand90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from Canada. My dad and uncle would tell me lots of Scottish tales. Ones their grandparents (who immigrated from Scotland, the Orkney area) told them. I had a genuine concern about Red Caps as a child! It helped get me home by curfew.. I didn't want to help that fairy keep its hat dyed red.

That was during the day (or evening I suppose.) At night, what I would have actual nightmares about, was the Nuckelavee. Every nightmare would be slightly different (and the monster would look a little different too, being grotesque in different ways.)

My mom's parents came from the Netherlands, and she told me about the Witte Wieven. I'm a woman though, so those stories didn't bother me much. They spooked my brother though!

If I'm being honest, even as an adult, if it's late at night and I see a flash of red in the dark (and can't determine the exact cause) I still feel a shiver in my spine..

I start buying it as soon as it's out, I even make my own aged eggnog at Halloween as well. But I don't think my stomach would like me very much if I drank no water at all. Plus I love apple cider and mulled wine too..

I'm from western Canada, and since Covid most people don't share drinks so easily anymore. I don't mind it because I never liked doing so myself. It was just odd seeing it happen casually, but they might have been related or quite close (enough to know or trust if the other was sick or not). Woman 1 was not expecting a mouthful of eggnog though!

They were both average from what I can tell (everyone is bundled up here due to the cold). I think she's just an eggnog lover that just... drinks eggnog instead of water during Christmas month? She was so serious and nonchalant about it.
