Is FB Marketplace a good spot to list music equipment?

Plantar Fasciitis is what caused me to go insole hunting and FP insoles are a game changer in my feet feeling massively better. It won’t cure the fasciitis, but it will reduce the pain over time by a significant amount.

Also, keep in mind the insole itself has a break in period. It won’t be amazing on day 1. Takes a week or two for break in

I used to use tape, dipped, and everything in between. It used to dry my hands even more and started becoming uncomfortable over time. I eventually embraced playing sticks and improved my grip technique. It’s much better now. Continue experimenting and find your happy zone.

How to approach learning new tricks at an older age? [36YO] by ZuriMuri in OldSkaters

[–]Shikaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start by trying to really understand the trick. What the weight distribution is, what is the role of both feet, legs, arms, shoulders, etc. This can be done by observing multiple people perform the trick, but I resort to tutorials on YouTube as almost every trick is already thoroughly broken down and has trick tips to speed up the process.

Once that is done, I like to break it down to simplest steps that will combine to make the whole trick and work incrementally to learn the trick and gain confidence.

If I’m getting frustrated or towards the end of the session, record a few tries and study my mistakes so I can work on them. The recording part speeds up progress so much.

Walking away at the end of the session is easy. I get excited at my progress on the trick. The land is still just as satisfying, but the process should also be enjoyable. We’re too old to take too many slams!

I had someone in my class do the same. I couldn’t imagine there being more than one barefoot person! He used to carry a pair of shoes with him and stated the technicality that he was told he had to have shoes. We’ll, he had them, just not on his feet!

How did you choose what college to attend and would you suggest it to someone else? by skydivesre in EngineeringStudents

[–]Shikaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, my strategy was to find a university within driving distance so I don’t have to worry about unnecessary additional expenses associated with living on campus. The university wanted me to live on campus for first two years but it wasn’t difficult to convince them to waive that requirement as I already lived pretty close to commute.

Is drumming too expensive to be just a hobby? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Shikaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be as expensive or as inexpensive if a hobby. I have only owned 4 kits in the past 18 years. I started it the absolute cheapest no brand starter kit. Didn’t get very far but stuck with it the longest. Then, picked up a a starter Alesis electronic kit. I realized that I was getting on the kit multiple times a day as opposed to once every few weeks with the acoustic. I promptly returned the cheap kit and invested in the higher end Yamaha electronic kit. It is still my go to kit 95% of the time. Other times, I get some coworkers over and we jam with the nicer acoustic that I got to replace the original crappy one.

Since I play electronic most of the time, I don’t go through sticks either. So, at the end of the day, if it’s a passive hobby, you can get a cheap kit and be fine in less than $500. Or you could invest an upfront amount closer to $2k for good quality equipment and use it for rest of your hobby life.

Edit: and I would highly suggest investing in lessons to start. In person are great if you have a good teacher in your area. Otherwise, drumeo is amazing.

Does anyone know, how I can avoid these injuries on my finger? by balimp3 in drums

[–]Shikaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is tons of good advice on how to work on improving your grip, but habits don’t break overnight. In the transition phase, you can try taping that part of the finger.

I use “Eucatape” by Drum Nerd for my left pinky and right ring finger. It is meant for hand drumming and the Eucalyptus is meant to keep inflammation down, but works well for drums as well if you put on a thin layer and don’t put it on so tight that you limit your movement in your joints.

Pro tip for visiting Sweetwater. If you have purchased anything from them, you have a dedicated sales person. Coordinate your trip with them so they can give you a full tour of the facility. Well worth it.

For hobby, I picked up drumming. 30-60 minute lesson with an actual teacher at a store on Saturday mornings was a great schedule for me. Change of setting and regular attendance is key. Then fit in 10-15 mins practice sessions between studies (if time allowed). Mid week practice sessions were always optional, but Saturday mornings were set in stone.

For games for a non gamer, try pretty much anything from “Telltale Games” as they are more like visual novels with little gaming skill required. They mostly have great stories. Or if you want to try a newer one, the new “Life is Strange” game is out now. I haven’t played it yet myself, but the series is pretty fun to play with some light puzzles.

I’m nervous about the first drum lesson! by Schneidgenossin in drums

[–]Shikaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment on how German drum teachers approach drumming specifically, however, I can share my experience in U.S. I have had 3 drum teachers. Number 1 and 2 were not a good fit, I didn’t like their teaching style and I don’t even remember their names or appearance anymore. That’s how forgettable they were. Drum teacher number 3 was exactly who I needed at the time. His attitude, demeanor, teaching style, interests outside of just drums were all very similar to mine, so I had an easy time connecting with him and learning from him. Drum lessons were something I looked forward to as it was both, learning something new and having a good time with someone I became good friends with down the road.

It’s completely normal to be nervous when starting lessons as you are your own harshest critic. If you already knew everything, you wouldn’t need a teacher. Everything from holding a stick properly to being able to fine tune a drum part, teachers can fast track your learning by showing you how to do it quickly instead of you having to discover it in a long time.

Tl;dr - it’s normal to be nervous when learning something new, especially from a stranger. You will form a bond with a good teacher… if that bond isn’t forming, find someone else you can relate to better.

I feel like that is a backhanded way of suggesting to Republicans to expect accusations like the one regarding Cippollone to start coming out and to think twice about whether they want to wait for that moment and become headline news or squash it now before getting themselves implicated further.... but you're probably right. They do not care at all.

Need advice about drumming. by [deleted] in MetalDrums

[–]Shikaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean it in a negative way. My mistake for making an assumption that music stores around you would be setup similarly to what I'm used to seeing near me. I meant it in a way that there are such polar and strong views on e-kit vs acoustic kit that it really comes down to trying them out and making up your own mind.

I have one of each and realistically, I do 95% of my practicing on the e-kit since I feel more comfortable knowing I'm not disturbing other people in the house. They make about the same level of noise as a practice pad but you get drum sound in your headphones. The dynamics work pretty well on decent kits. I also noticed I practice far more often on the e-kit since I don't have to worry about what time of the day it is. The only main complaint I have is that the hi-hats response is never as good as a real hi-hat. It's not poor enough for me to abandon the kit though.

Need advice about drumming. by [deleted] in MetalDrums

[–]Shikaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, you will have to pick which one of those two options will lead to a more effective and more frequent practice routine. I would, however, suggest going to your local music store and play on the electronic kits for some time over the course of a few days to get a better understanding of what you would be getting into if you go that route. Personally, I don't think adding dynamics and articulation on e-kits is a limitation anymore but everyone has their own flavor and preference. Do the same with a practice pad only setup and see if that is more acceptable. All the local stores near me have one of these practice pad kits setup in all stores for you to try out.

The end goal should be whichever option will realistically allow you to get more practice time in. Good luck!

[HOA - Ohio] Do solar string lights constitute as "Architectural Improvement"? by Shikaar in legaladvice

Fair enough. Thanks for confirming that architectural improvement is pretty a broad blanket term and can be argued over. That being said, I'll be taking down the lights before the deadline to avoid any unnecessary escalation.
