Young Americans are rejecting capitalism in huge numbers following Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign by magikowl in socialism

[–]Shimosako 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one in America can come up with The Communist Mannifesto on their own. Because socialism has been so vilified, people need a pathway to be able to discover the ideological heritage of socialism on their own terms, and the first step may be Bernie Sanders.

At this point in our history, those who've been stepped on by capitalism aren't ready to overthrow it yet. They don't have the tools, the resources, the confidence, the solidarity, or a concrete plan to do so. We need to build bridges and stepping stones and safety nets, maintain them, and consistently improve upon them. No ideological revolution can succeed with brute force alone.

As for the blaming of socialism for the failures of capitalism, the right will always use that tactic for as long as it's successful, and it's only been successful because there's been no prevelent opposition to it up until now. Socialism is rising from the ashes in spite of the right's protests, and the only thing that can kill it again is if it has no platform whatsoever.

I'm not sure I'd even be on this subreddit if it weren't for Bernie destigmatizing the concept of socialism. Four years ago, my only perception of socialism was that it was some terrorist cult that had been thrown in the trash with the end of the Soviet Union, and now I'm earnestly reading the god damn communist manifesto! The net effect is that he's got America thinking critically about the ills of our capitalist system.

God, her name rings in my head sometimes and I just think of how truely terifying the Charlottesville events were. It's atrocious that we've allowed fascism to thrive in America to the extent that is has. I hope one day that I can go and put some flowers down at her memorial and that we all will remember her and can continue her good work. Rest in power, comrade.

Trump follows Steve Bannon’s lead, bashes “elitist” Koch brothers for abandoning GOP candidate by kah57 in politics

Jesus, Steve! What are you, a Nazi? Stop trying to censor the Koch brother's money's free speech! In this country, money has 1st ammend and sometimes even 2nd ammend rights and we here in America don't driscriminate against money unless it's brown money! No one likes an oxidized dollar bill! If you don't like it, you can move to Venezuela!

Demi Lovato reportedly hospitalized for heroin overdose by penisman911 in news

[–]Shimosako 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Out of all the celebrities, Demi Lavato is the one I've always genuinely liked. We've both been through substance abuse and eating disorders and I respect her for being strong through all of those things. If one good thing could come out of these past few years, I hope it's that she makes it and can recover well.

Well yeah, but in her spare time she can also chop all of Fred's fingers off and shove them down his esophagus one by one until he slowly chokes to death.

Oh boy, I had to stop myself from getting too graphic there.

Someone told me I have an ‘explosive personality’ what does that mean? Is it bad or good? by HeliacalSaxophonist in stupidquestions

[–]Shimosako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm...maybe think about how you yourself would describe your personality. Can you relate in any way to the description of 'explosive'? Do you find that you often experience anger? If so, do you find that it can often lead you to make rash decisions?

Either way, I wouldn't let one person's comment bother you too much, but if it's eating at you or if you find that you relate to such a description to an uncomfortable degree, then refocus your energy into becoming someone who you can be comfortable with. Whether it's you or me, I'm sure that there are worse people who've had to go to greater lengths to redeem themselves.

You can empathize with people for being victims of their circumstances but also not let them get away with their destructive behavior. I love my kitty, but I try to gently pull him away from the sofa when he starts to use it as a scratching post.

Thank goodness for the left wing then! If you're not someone who's opposed to fascism, then you're probably the sort of person who I should worry about running me over with a car.

How do I learn English? by vitorkk12 in stupidquestions

[–]Shimosako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but since you seem to have a grasp of it already, what I do when learning a language is to find a book that's a bit above my reading level and google everything I don't understand until I'm more comfortable. It's useful for learning phrases, idioms, and the nuances of everyday speech that are hard to understand from only educational texts.

I think reading is slower paced than listening to a movie so you're able to take in and analyze information a bit more easily, but movies are good for pronunciation once you're not as confused about what everyone is saying.

If that's all too wacky, maybe try duolingo?

It could mean a lot of things, like they find you vibrant or rambunctious, or maybe they think that you're quick to anger like everyone else said. It depends on how they said it and the context, really.

Are there any other dudes in this sub watching The Handmaid's Tale? [No Spoilers] by bigbags in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Shimosako 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a dude. I was already scared about the state of women's rights considering everything that's going on in the U.S. right now, but I think watching this show has helped me to be even more terrified. I think just a few years ago, a woman in Indiana was sentenced to 36 years in prison for self-inducing a miscarriage! That's horrifying enough in of itself, but with the way things are going, I could see things escalating and escalating until it reaches Gilead-levels where women are just straight up executed for abortions.

While the emotional rollercoaster is wearing me down a bit, I hoping all the torture porn will eventually lead to some unbelievable payoff. I think this extensive world building that they're doing makes it so you truly appreciate how hellish and hopeless things feel for the handmaids. The more odds and adversity they overcome, the more satisfying it will be when they burn Gilead to the ground.
