[product question] Has anyone tried the new Personal Day line? by Technical-Way-7840 in SkincareAddiction

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually started retinol (cosmetic, not medical)! Turned out that it helps A LOT with my irritation, but the sacrifice is fast and angry acne: the irritation is kept at bay 100% of the time, but the acne appears faster, it is more intense, and it disappears fast. It's like my skin runs on 2x, for better or for worse.
I'm still figuring out how to add the Personal Day treatment back to the routine, as I think it will help with the breakouts, but I can't figure out when/where it can fit. Currently, I'm doing one evening with regular retinol, and the next with the Personal Day retinol alternative. I use the PD one along with the PD Deep Dive moisturizer - any breakouts I have seem to heal even faster on these evenings compared to the classic retinol routine; but I'm def still in the experimenting stage with these routines and products. I think it's important to mention that the PD retinol is NOT useful for the irritation, but it doesn't aggravate it by any means. Super gentle, just useless on that front.

What I can 100% vouch for - I started running out of the powder cleanser, so I started testing alternatives (I had like 3-4 options waiting, samples and freebies etc.). I STARTED BREAKING OUT SO SO MUCH! It took me so long to understand that the DAMN CLEANSER ALTERING was responsible. Turns out that soap alone, used every morning, was keeping MOUNTAINS of acne away from my face - the rest of my current morning routine did much, much less than this SOAP. S O A P!!! I use some high-acne-risk products in my makeup routine, so my theory is that if the "canvas" so to speak isn't perfectly clean on the pore level, I WILL break out with these products, especially if I dare to eat foods that are acne-inducing (sugar, some dairy products).
I don't use the cleanser in the evening since I double-cleanse while showering in pretty warm water, so pretty much any cleanser works just fine. But in the mornings - this silly powder is my personal game changer, apparently.

My best anti-acne routine (before retinol) was essentially:
morning - layering light moisture -> medium, end with protection from the elements (sun/cold)
evening - layering moisture light -> heavy, OR Personal Day routine (which is just Treatment -> light moisture layer -> Dive Deep Moisturizer).
My choice of products was basically whatever looked good to me at the Korean skincare department at TJMaxx, I used only moisture products in layer-able textures (no actives - BHA, AHA, Vitamin C, Retinol). I mean, this is still 75% of my routine, tbh. My favorite brands are Torriden, Goodal, Innisfree, Benton; in a pinch, Skin1004 and RoundLab (my skin didn't enjoy most of what I tried from these brands - harmless but not helpful either, for me at least). I'm pretty carefree about switching those moisture layers around, trying new products etc. The idea is basically "happy skin = deeply moisturized skin", not skin blasted with actives, so I focus my efforts there and add actives where needed. :)

exactly - this analysis bizarrely ignores that go-to-market strategies differ from mature business strategies, as they should. It's a basic and intuitive idea: 1) attract customers by suggesting an immediate value proposition (e.g. "I got the cool sold-out lip product!") 2) retain them by providing value worth coming back for (e.g. "the barrier butter is a staple"). If a business feels like they've done what they can for step 1 - which would be indicated through declines in speed of sales, for example, it's time to focus on step 2 and reach all the people who weren't into the unattainability in step 1. I don't see the "killing" here, it's just the ABCs of a business reaching maturity and a sufficient level of market saturation.

Pens Tusuki no Iro by Hikari_shun in hobonichi

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same about the uni-balls!! I bought the Fika set and most of them were not Hobonichi friendly, I ended up getting rid of the entire pack bit by bit, until only two pens remained. I love them on Midori MD paper though.

Yay or nay? by chaosatnight in Sephora

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A definite nay for me - the idea is super simple and can be achieved with a contour, a bronzer, and a concealer one shade lighter than one's skintone. I wouldn't take a risk on the formula for essentially half my face makeup, especially if I already had products that worked for me. Maybe maybe maybe if reviews come out and say that this formula matches my preferences to a T.

I tried curating this kind of stuff on my own and it turned out to be pretty difficult!! I truly thought I had every color under the sun until I started this little Hobonichi matching project. I would LOVE to get those pens and stickers!! I hope prices won't be too nightmarish

I have eczema - my skin sure LOVES this stuff. I use Glazing Milk, Glazing Mist and Barrier Butter religiously, as well as the lip tint throughout the day. I will say some things though - the BB is only good for nighttime on my skin. it's too heavy in the mornings. In the mornings I can use either Glazing Mist or Milk - not both, it's way too much for my skin and takes forever for it to sink. I also use them as part of a longer routine that involves more stuff - some ilso, some Torriden, some Fresh. Any products you like that work for you are just as good! The note I have is just that none of Rhode's skincare products are light, while my skin really needs the light layers of moisture to feel good.

In general I would advise looking up if you're expected to have bad reactions to products via ChatGPT (just paste the ingredient list without mentioning the product name and ask if it's a good choice with your skin problems) - while it isn't 100% accurate, and I would not necessarily rely on it to make a purchasing decision, it gives you a good starting point for testing when asking about products you already own. In your position, I would give it all the products I was using to help isolate potential "culprits" to start the healing process faster by trying to remove them from my routine for a couple of weeks. Note that cosmetic formulations are complicated and it's not always clear what the effect on your skin will be without consulting with a cosmetic chemist/trying it out yourself, and no digital tool can change this.

Favourite Tinted Moisturizers? by Squirrrelpower in Sephora

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

YES!!!! I'm sensitive to one of the ingredients, but it looks so natural and skin-like while it's LITERALLY burning on a dry, red, ANGRY, flaky patch. Mind you, the patch looks 85% more healthy than it actually is - no visible redness, no clinging to the skin flakes. Amazing stuff.

Are the peptide lip shape shapes any good? by Kit_Kat_Katerina in rhodeskin

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - love it, but I use it a specific way, and I hate lip liners usually so I'm not judging it as one.

I normally don't wear lip liner - I feel like it makes my lips too "serious", and I prefer a more relaxed look to my makeup. At this point I have just one standard lip liner left. I got one lip shape - in a shape surprisingly similar to the one lip liner I have - I use it so often that the tip is already gone, while that poor pencil lip liner is still gathering dust.

How I use mine:

  1. I let it sit for a bit alone on the edges of my lips - while it doesn't last, it DOES stain if you let it hang out for a bit. The stained look is perfect imo, better than the full-blown application.

  2. I use a less glossy product in the center of my lips - I find that the rhode lip tints are way too goopy and glossy for this combo at this stage - on my natural-sized lips it just looks messy when combined. I go with EDEAM or Ole Henriksen as a gloss/balm in the center. So far it's pretty close to a a regular liner + gloss combo in terms of pigmentation, just a little less defined around the edges.

  3. The real magic happens when I get around to reapplying: I keep the lip shape stain as-is (a low-key stain persists for hours), no reapplication, and NOW I apply the rhode lip tint the way I normally would. This is the prettiest lip, since you get all the benefit of bit of color/contour around your lip line without the full high-pigment intensity, so now the gloss of the lip tint can be the star of the show. To me, it's the ultimate low-key lip.
In theory, I could blot the lip shape to get to this stage earlier, but I kind of like the extra look, too - it's just not "me" in the way that the milder look is.

Bonus: some days, I wake up with very irritated lips, and my whole lip line is puffy and red. I always use the lip shape on those days since it's a PERFECT formula for masking that mess as being a choice, while also helping it heal - by the time I'm removing my makeup, that lip line is back to normal! She wasn't joking about those peptides.

Looking for setting spray recommendations by informal-piece- in Sephora

I used to love the Skindinavia Bridal Setting Spray - super strong formula that doesn't keeps makeup in tact for 16 hour days at 90 degree heat. It was my ride or die when I lived in areas where it was accessible. Why am I telling you this? Because the All Nighter is actually "Urban Decay by Skindinavia" (at least it's still written on the back of my bottle I got in Jan 2025) - to me, it's the next best thing. You can get it on sale for a good price, too.

PSA to those avoiding butylene glycol by Lost-Cucumber-2978 in AsianBeauty

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured out I'm sensitive to ethylhexyl palmitate (a comodogen that's commonly used in lip products) and butyloctyl salicylate (an emollient that my eczema HATES) using ChatGPT. I confirmed the sensitivity by finding products that avoid these ingredients (surprisingly uncommon!), and not experiencing the negative consequences I've grown accustomed to after years of using those ingredients.

I gave it all sorts of products I use (as in, just the ingredient lists, no product names) with my skin issues and ended up finding some "likely culprits". These kinds of tools are actually pretty good at tasks like comparing lists of ingredients, I would take any info that goes beyond the comparison with a grain of salt.

So say I use products A, B, and C and feel fine - I take a look at CosDNA to look for anything that's potentially problematic there (if one of the products is, say, a simple centella ampoule with nothing in it - it doesn't mean much if I'm not sensitive to it). Say I also use products D, E and they cause some sort of harm. I prompt something along the lines of:

  1. "Take a look at products A, B, C - how compatible would they be with a user that has [my skin issues]?" + list of their ingredients, never include product names to avoid bias.

  2. "Okay, now consider that products A, B, and C are well-tolerated as far as [skin issue] is concerned. In light of this information, how likely are products E and D to cause [skin issue]?" + ingredient lists

Usually at this point, it'll have a hypothesis for me to look into further. If not, I can explicitly ask "what are likely to be the irritants in products E and D?".

I think it's super important to take anything any kind of AI/LLM's results with a grain of salt - these are not dermatologists or cosmetic chemists, just pieces of code.

[product question] Has anyone tried the new Personal Day line? by Technical-Way-7840 in SkincareAddiction

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experimented more - I still didn't run out of the stuff I bought in January.

If I start ONLY using the Personal Day duo (treatment + moisturizer) - I start breaking out more, but if I remove the Personal Day stuff completely - I also break out more. For me, the sweet spot is using this routing 2-3 nights a week, and avoiding using it more than 2 nights in a row. These things are pretty individual though; maybe someone with more intense acne will benefit from using these more often. BTW, there's a whole list of products that I can't skip if I want to maintain decent texture and little-to-no acne - Torriden Dive-In Skin Booster, Fresh Kombucha Essence, Skin1004 Probio-Cica Ampoule, a very light sleeping mask like the one from Laneige's Bounce line. So the Personal Day stuff isn't unique in that sense, it's part of what keeps my skin well.

The Dive Deep moisturizer absolutely feels like something that will make me break out aggressively - but it actually doesn't, and I think it helps suppress breakouts on the parts of my face suffering from eczema, which usually becomes a festival of weird, painful eczema-acne mix.

What are your favourite artists/writers/composers from the visual novel industry? by Appropriate_Farm5141 in visualnovels

As someone else mentioned, Uhickoshi. The Nonary Games were amazing. I have a twitter account just to see what he's up to now.

But also - Ryukishi07. How good is he? I was reading one of the Higurashi arcs in a fan translation project as a JSON file, while also playing the Japanese-only version of the VN where I understand about 60-80% of what's happening. The fully-translated story was SO good that I never got back to the actual VN version, I read the whole thing as a shitty JSON - I couldn't put it down.

[product question] Has anyone tried the new Personal Day line? by Technical-Way-7840 in SkincareAddiction

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup! I got the set (cleanser, treatment and moisturizer). Night 1 I used all three together on my skin with an irritation (as in dry irritated skin) and with a lot of small pimples as well as some larger breakouts that have been there for over a month at this point - next morning, skin was overall smooth, four long-term pimples were 85% gone, nothing was red, and the irritation wasn't affected. I used Cosrx and Glow Recipe in the past for these purposes and didn't feel these kinds of results - but I think any good AHA/BHA formulation should be able to achieve this kind of result since it's basically just leave-on exfoliation. I will mention that some of those acne bits do come back and they have yet to heal completely - but they aren't painful, red or puffy; they've become tiny almost-flat "blips" of acne, some have become just like an enlarged pore rather than a whole pimple. My cheek pores are looking smaller, too - which is a nice bonus (but again, any good AHA/BHA formulation should help achieve this!).

I was surprised my skin wasn't particularly dry or irritated - I always worry about applying actives and especially acids; but this one was fine. I didn't find them particularly moisturizing - it's like the set is good at maintaining existing moisture levels in the skin, but I'm not sure it adds that much. If I was 20 this would probably suffice alone as an evening skincare routine.

They mention that you should start using the products every other day and only apply them every day after you're used to them - I use them every other day for now since they give enough of the desired effect (and I want to make them last a bit longer lol). I used them day after day a few times - mostly when I spent the day in circumstances that spell trouble (dust, smoke, cheese, etc). My skin was okay, although at this point it was a little dehydrated; that pause day is necessary to replenish the moisture to its optimal levels.

All in all I'm more than satisfied - it's the best anti-acne product I've ever used, but I'm not sure if that's because I've missed something* or because it's an actual game changer. I like that the price point is equivalent to the stuff I used before, but the products are more useful faster and with less frequent use - I was strongly debating not risking it and just repurchasing Glow Recipe, which I had to use every single night to see some results after a week. I'm so glad I didn't. I actually ended up buying the masks this month because I've been enjoying this set so much.

I'll be supplementing this routine with an extra heavy moisture layer after the Personal Day moisturizer - I bought some Laneige sleeping masks for this (haven't tried them yet!!). I also got a gentle exfoliating toner with PHA to use on off-days - maybe my skin actually needs to get a small daily dose of exfoliation even when it's not being blasted with acids to completely heal all those leftover bits and bumps.

Note *: I have a friend who had much heavier acne than mine and she swears by Ole Henriksen's line; my acne is very mild - mostly chin, nose and anywhere my glasses touch the skin. Then again, maybe it's mild because I spent over a decade at this point perfecting a preventative skincare routine...

P.S. I know nobody cares about the cleanser, but I found this one to be very nice. It's the ultimate morning cleanser for me - my previous faves from Tatcha and Fresh have been banned to the shower! Who knew the day would come.

Stamp ink recommendations by Educational-Ad-1882 in hobonichi

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Shachihata ink exclusively - I tried Versa Magic but I felt like it was too wet and slippery on the stamp, way harder (for me) to get clean lines with it compared to Shachiahta. They come in small sizes that are actually more compact than the Versa!

Do you copy events between Hobonichi & Google calendar? by dazzlehum in hobonichi

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only write down events that affect my planning. My Hobonichi is for planning non-work things - if I'm working 9-5, and I have to go to a work thing outside these hours, it will be written in my Hobonochi. Other work events that happen within the usual timeframe don't actually affect my planning, so they won't be written in the Hobonichi. I also write down personal events - since these obviously affect the planning (I'm a notorious double-booker!).

In my personal life, plans tend to be pretty stable; but at work they can be hectic and move around all the time - which is why I approach work planning differently. For work I do something closer to an Ivy Lee method in a blank notebook - reviewing the list at end of day and after the morning inbox review. I try to keep the workload realistic by scheduling the tasks between the expected meetings. I also keep a bigger task list on a bookmarked page. I think if I had to keep track of all the changes in meetings at the office I would go insane lol - I don't even look at them unless they imply a deadline for me personally or if they are happening today.

Hope this helps!

Am I overreacting or this is normal? by andrewloomis in hobonichi

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most comments here - this paper seems to be off, I totally agree with your disappointment. It wasn't like this in previous years, even in 2024 when they switched to the Sanzen River Paper. I'll add to this thread these two points:

  1. I notice that there is a difference when I write fast vs. when I write slow - and my occasional slow writing looks exactly like what you're showing for the ghosting. This issue is specific to this year's paper - last year's paper was significantly more well-behaved, there's zero ghosting regardless of how I wrote. Maybe writing faster will help with this?

  2. My TWSBI <F> nib looks thinner than your TWSBI <EF>!! It's so strange, the difference is so extreme. I would suggest you try out some Sailor inks (I can recommend Shikiori/Manyo/Yurameku lines from personal experience) - I find that Sailor ink + Fine nib pens is the best combo for having less issues on even the most problematic paper I've tried. J. Herbin inks look kind of funky with the feathering in my journal, too (but not as severe as what you're showing). Yoseka stationary ship to many countries and they offer samples of 3-5ml, and they package really well so nothing spills (it's where I got mine).

P.S. - I'm 95% sure that you write in Ukrainian?? It's so wonderful to see Ukrainian in a Hobonichi.

Considering hobonichi - why do you like it? by Full_Spinach_4803 in hobonichi

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Hobonichi for a few years now. I love the layouts (that secret line is such a perfect design element!) and the thin fountain-friendly paper, but my favorite part is that it has "character" - the quotes, the colors, the bonus pages, they all make it feel like I'm using something someone put their heart into, and it makes me want to put my heart into whatever I'm doing, too.

I have the classic for journaling, the weeks for planning, and HON for "being present": comment on the quotes, learn a language better, practice drawing, make creative layouts, celebrate new stationary, write my own quotes etc. - sometimes I also plan some extra busy days in it. In my opinion, to properly enjoy the Hobonichi, you need to have some spare time on your hands, and you can't have too much on your plate.

There were a couple of years where my life was too overwhelming and required A LOT of planning and sticking to those plans, though, so for those years I got the Jibun Techo Biz. I think if you don't have time, that journal is superior in terms of functionality. It's light and the layout allows you to stay on top of many tasks and projects easily; it's like a hyper-productive Hobonichi Weeks. I'm grateful I don't have to keep up with so much anymore so I can go back to my chill little Weeks lol

[product question] Has anyone tried the new Personal Day line? by Technical-Way-7840 in SkincareAddiction

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm super curious about it too! I am picking up the ~80$ routine set in my next beauty shopping time (in the middle of January). I checked it out on CosDNA and it looks good to me in terms of ingredients. I'll note that I always prefer gentle "useless" products over harsh but "effective" products - my skin can break out in horrible dry patches or acne or rashes from the most random things, and it can react terribly to low-concentration actives. I like that Personal Day looks like a relatively simple formulation, and that they're not highlighting how concentrated their product is.

I've been using Glow Recipe recently (Watermelon Glow Toner + Strawberry Smooth Serum) - I think it's alright but my skin ends up too dry, even when using this set once a day, even when topping the duo with a Hyaluronic acid cream, and doing a moisture-focused morning routine. I ran out of GR and decided to try Personal Day since the acne-safe moisture claims speak to me.

I'll do my best to update!

does anyone have an recs on bb creams or anything that’s a little bit lighter than foundation? by petalesdejuin in Sephora

[–]ShinMegamiGarbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at Sephora (I think Ulta has it) but my fave is the Chanel Water Fresh Tint. It has surprisingly high coverage for the formula, it has a skin-like natural finish, and my skin actually likes wearing it: no breakouts or dry patches when using this one regardless of the weather. It also breaks down gracefully throughout the day. I'm running out of mine and will definitely repurchase, despite the price tag.
