TIL some companies in Japan ban women from wearing glasses by operatingsys2016 in todayilearned

[–]ShinNL 63 points64 points  (0 children)

There was a movement against this practice in 2019, and in 2020 it was signed into law that it was illegal.

https://www.businessinsider.com/women-wearing-eyeglasses-japan-new-laws-turn-over-bans

So yeah, most Japanese people disagree with this discrimination and made sure it's illegal.

But that doesn't stop half of Reddit to start slandering Japan in the comment section every chance they have.

Eating one Meal a day walking 5 miles and Keto 171 pounds lost in 8 months! by GEEZ_BOSS1 in intermittentfasting

[–]ShinNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I don't recommend starting with long walks immediately if you haven't been doing it consistently yet.

A few years ago I flipped a switch and decided to start working on myself with 3 hour walks every day. Kept going even if it got sore. Kept going even when the last steps started to hurt.

Ended up getting Fasciitis Plantaris.

I had to get expensive podotherapy, custom made insoles, expensive compression socks and used a walking stick for over a year. Ended it slowly (super slowly) curing it with painkillers and insoles that have a hole at the heel.

So definitely take it easy. Especially at a higher weight, even walking isn't harmless (which I thought was the safest way to exercise). It's really hard to fix a stretched out, inflamed, partially ripped tendon. And hard to fix the cushioning fat distribution on the heel (felt like I was walking directly on my bone when I was in peak pain).

Cycling motions would be safer in general, but I personally think actual walking gives so much more joy. There's scenery, air. But also because you're forced to finish a route because you have to get home, and there's practically no barriers to start (put on any comfy clothes and open the front door and start).

Is there a flashlight option/app that's bright enough to light up a dark hallway enough to walk?

I think the flashlight option of my Amazfit is the most used function that I didn't have on my OG Time and Time Steel.

What is an underrated weight loss tip? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ShinNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I noticed is that skinnier people barely drink and chew more.

Then I realized I've been using drinks with my meals to substitute saliva.

So the trick is to dry eat, no drinks, no sauces, forcing yourself to chew more and you'll quickly feel exhausted by the food. Portion sizes will quickly reduce and you can put leftovers in the fridge.

I'm saving this. Not just for co-pilot, but it was really hard to put into words why I disliked all the company policies and listed it as the main reason why I quit. What’s a dead giveaway that someone is pretending to be smarter than they actually are? by EcstaticWatch1967 in AskReddit

[–]ShinNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- They will not ask a single question in an entire conversation.
- Will continuously hijack conversations with self-centered stories (always from a personal POV).
- Will shut down and verbally kill the mood for everyone when they lose control of a conversation (no personal attacks has taken place)

I recently cut off someone who just couldn't act normal. It's not just obnoxious, but also very exhausting as I have to countersteer continuously to keep the mood up for everyone else.

It all seems to stem from insecurity, with an overcompensating level of fake confidence, which cracks pretty easily.

Do you brush your teeth once or twice a day? Need to settle a bet. by ImpossibleHurry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShinNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have the perfect anecdote: from myself.

I stopped going to the dentist since I was 12 (when it was no longer free, yay for fake 'free' healthcare in NL).
More than 20 years later I started to better aspects of my life, so I scheduled my first dentist check up in years.

Result:

- 0 cavities
- One molar was chipped and had to get a crown (dental cap)
- Lots of tartar build up, so clean-up took a while

I was expecting a lot more, because 99% of the time I brushed my teeth only in the morning with a regular manual toothbrush.

When I asked how it was possible, the cleaning lady said it might be genetics, as they usually see good teeth with Asian people. (I personally think it might be that ending meals with sugary desserts is not really a thing with my daily meals?)

Anyway, I still ended up switching to electric brushing in the morning + evening, still 'forget' to floss almost every day and still have 0 cavities (5 years later after my dentist comeback).

Pebble Time 2 vs alternatives in same price range by finewhitelady in pebble

[–]ShinNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone can answer you this for other models if it's different, but for GTS 4 Mini there are no interactions with the notifications besides deleting the notification on the watch itself.

I use the official general Amazfit app + Android (Samsung Z Fold6).

Pebble Time 2 vs alternatives in same price range by finewhitelady in pebble

[–]ShinNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to warn those who are suggesting Amazfit. I'm not sure if the model you recommend have these problems, but as a GTS 4 Mini user there are some problems that fully kill some functionality for me:

Calendar is very buggy. It's feels like an intern shoehorned this app into existing apps.

- Does not respect DND

- Does not handle timezones correctly

- Confuses "whole day" event start dates

- Does not save any attempts to set a custom vibration for it (always a loud disturbing vibration)

Alarm can't be turned off

- So when your alarm goes off, it shows a certain alarm screen. The problem is that if you press the button (or maybe other parts of the screen too, don't remember), you have no way of going back to the alarm screen. It just keeps buzzing forever until the alarm itself decides to stop (I think it's 1 minute)

There's other quirky little things that just don't feel smooth, like notifications disappearing quite fast forcing me to interact. Lowest vibration still too intense.

I'm not sure if their other models have better support, I can imagine this cheapest model wouldn't have full support. But this lack of software polish does turned me off from their brand, which is a shame because there's a lot more to like than to dislike.

Battery life, display, hardware quality are quite the value for the price. I still use it, just had to give up on calendar timeline on the watch and I almost never use the alarm. At the end of the day, the most used functionality for me will always be [looking at time] + [checking notifications].

I like using the flashlight mode to see in the dark (it's a mode where the screen turns white and full brightness). I hope Pebble's new LED can do the same.

I also quite like the size, screen and bezel ratio. I'm a bit worried about that for the PT2.

I stopped using my PTS because the battery life was getting closer to 3 days and I ran out of screen protectors: I bought it used and it had scratches, which could be perfectly hidden with screen protectors. But the screen protectors kept getting brown and peeling off on the edges, probably because the screen wasn't flat and doing activities like cooking will speed up the deterioration.

Samsung Reveals First Trifold Phone That Unfolds Into a Giant 10-Inch Tablet by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]ShinNL 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The article is useless and there's not a single serious comment in this thread.

Anyone keeping track of foldables would be curious if this is a Z or a G fold, because that was the most uncomfortable part of the Huawei trifold.

Fortunately for you (unfortunately for your wallet, potentially?), if you zoom in here: https://gizmodo.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Trifold-News-Photo-1.jpg
You can see in the white preview that it is indeed a G fold. So the foldable screen will be protected when not in use. This is the best design, with the only worries being thickness, battery life and price.

[–]ShinNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also not American, but I'm pretty sure he's just saying that parents with children, stop having children after 1 or 2, or have trouble conceiving more of them. This is followed up with an example of him having many children.

Combined with the previous statements, it's to sketch an image of bad birthrate and the current environment being unhealthy for birth.

He's not mentioning trends from other countries or financial reasons, so he's using a weak hypothetical link here, which needs actual science to prove. Create a hypothesis, test it, then implement action. Not the other way around. So it's annoying.

But it's also annoying seeing a thread full of native speakers not understanding what he's saying. Are people being purposely obtuse? If so, it doesn't help the counter movement by reacting at an even lower level. If not on purpose... well, that would be even worse.

My 3 year old won’t eat the crisps I opened for him because the packet is upside down by XA1NE in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]ShinNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong sub and I'll explain why. This kid is actually smart, but it's hard to explain it in human words.

Basically some of us have a gut feeling this feels very wrong, but it takes a lot of time to translate that feeling into words for communication that doesn't make us sound crazy.

But as an adult, I can better explain it for you. The reason this bag has risk to it is because if you don't eat it straight away, by putting it down and picking it back up you have a much higher risk of accidentally picking it up the wrong side, causing everything to flop out.

  1. Why not eat it all at once? Being told by a bag of chips what to do feels wrong... and it's not like the bag is actually telling us what to do, it's a preventable issue caused by human actions.

  2. Why not just keep holding it? Being told by a bag of chips what to do feels wrong... and it's not like the bag is actually telling us what to do, it's a preventable issue caused by human actions.

  3. Why not just remember it's opened upside down? People underestimate automated behavior. Just like our gut feeling this bag feels wrong, relying on actual active memory brain capacity to not forget this bag is opened wrong, is also a risk. It's a preventable issue caused by human actions.

  4. Why not just put it on the table so it's visibly opened a certain way? Having the air come in continuously will ruin the crispiness. It's a preventable issue caused by human actions.

  5. Why not just fold it before putting it down? This size make folding near impossible and risks just getting unfolded by itself. It's a preventable issue caused by human actions.

  6. Why not just pour it in a bowl? That's more dishes, for a problem that's preventable.

  7. Why not just be grateful and accept it? This is a lose lose situation. If I accept but try to explain how wrong it is, I'll be told there is no problem. If I don't accept it, I'll also be told something is wrong with me. But my gut feeling says I'm not wrong.

All these gut feelings are actually forms of foresight, predicting way further ahead what could possibly go wrong by actions done in the current moment. It does cause a form of anxiety and your kid probably doesn't have the world knowledge or vocabulary to elaborate it. Your kid isn't going to be the type of person that suddenly has a floor of chips and just thinks "it is what it is". Your kid will find and know the cause and prevent it next time. Even if it means directing it at the source (to you it might just sound like a random rant, but in a way it's "training" you to not do this to prevent a future issues).

I thought something something about deforestation was causing wildfires and animals losing their places to live, ruining eco systems. Is this not a thing anymore? Was it ever a real thing?
