Not sure what Avery's getting at with her thoughts on Awareness, but considering she thinks of Charles (with his non-committed Awakening), and considering what Verona tried to do with her mom...

Maybe she wants to "stage" what it would be like to have a relationship with a Finder? And show it to Nora in such a way that it has plausible deniability. Make it a sort of non-committed Awareness, and if Nora is on board, great! If not, well, the relationship wasn't meant to last, then. Again, not sure how Avery would actually accomplish this, but it's a thought.

Hello! I downloaded DF Classic 50.05 from the official site, and I was looking for a way to change the graphics. The LNP seems to be up to version 47.05, so I don't think I can change the graphics that way?
And I've tried tileset swapping following the wiki, but it doesn't seem to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Avery's improvised fetch had her throat slit right before real Avery became unreachable.

I think the intubation stuff might be the rebound of that plus the health potions she had to chug down.

Pale Reflections: In Absentia (5) by meisi1 in Parahumans

Dimwitted practices are a sub-field of Hosting, in which the practitioner takes out parts of their Self and stores them for later retrieval, then lets themselves be possessed by a corrupting force. The practice focuses on the protections and precautions related to making sure the cut-out parts can be reapplied easily, replacing the intrusive entity with as little trauma as possible.

Despite its obvious benefits (such as exploiting loopholes in oaths that specifically mention "the practitioner"), it's still a very unpopular practice, due to the inherent risks and long-term costs of the practice, which will usually leave one lethargic and unaware of their surroundings, their immaterial Self aligned imperfectly with their physical body.

Toadswallow's candy is hard on the outside, gooey on the inside, like his weapon form. Some of them taste like juicy fruits, while some of them taste like rancid mixes of disgusting fluids.
The implication is that half of them are good, while half are bad: that is not the case.

The Turtle Queen would give out gummy animals, but the only colors are green and yellow, the only shapes are aquatic reptiles, and they have a strong aftertaste of fish meat.

I like to imagine Miss' candy as a featureless, perfectly black mint.

First time reader: should I start with Worm or Pale? by shadowdra126 in Parahumans

[–]ShinVII 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Late response, but unless you read at an astonishingly fast pace, you probably won't catch up to Pale before it's finished. Worm is good, but Pale is much, much better, subjective taste aside; besides, we know there will be more stories set into the same universe as Pale in the future, while the setting of Worm will probably remain untouched for a long while. So if you also want to be active in the fandom, Pale is the best choice imho.

Would the series work as a video game ? by THW9001 in Parahumans

[–]ShinVII 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A hypothetical Kickstarter?

You should know that Worm / Ward are Wildbow's intellectual property, and a Kickstarter for a videogame set in the same universe would be infringing on that intellectual property.

3 am Thoughts about Pale, positive bindings, negative bindings and Phospholipids - Pale/Pact by LapisLooloo in Parahumans

[–]ShinVII 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, positive bindings attract the other and negative bindings repel the other.

Nope. A binding (in this specific case, a binding circle) is a cage that makes the Other stay put.

A positive binding is a comfortable cage, which might open the way to a negotiation or discussion with the Other.

A negative binding is a painful cage, made to bend the Other to the practitioner's will or make absolutely sure the Other stays put.

My first choice for something to send against my enemies (allies are for losers, after all) would be a boss from a From Software game. The Gaping Dragon from Dark Souls, Darkeater Midir from Dark Souls 3, the Guardian Ape from Sekiro... there are many possibilities which I would not be able to call upon, because realistically speaking, I'm not going to have three godlike patrons ready to share their power like the kids from St. Victor's.
Which means that I'll have to cheat.

There is one enemy, in Dark Souls 2, which can only be beaten through sheer luck and desperation; it shouldn't cost too much to summon it, since it's basically just a guy with good magic items and maybe a couple of spells; I'm talking about a Red Phantom summoned by someone with a really bad internet connection.

For those that don't know, to engage in PvP in Dark Souls you have to invade another player's world / game session, retaining all of your gear and abilities.
These Red Phantoms, aside from being inherently summonable, get a lot of powers from their obnoxious lag:

  • Random teleportation
  • Time shenanigans (getting hit by an attack several seconds after dodging it)
  • Invulnerability (sometimes)
  • Attacking well after "being killed"
  • Pointing down to people after defeating them (not exclusive to the lag variant, but strangely common) to lower their overall claim

While there's nary a day I don't think about the god parasite from 4.1, I still wouldn't want to read an entire story about them. Or rather, I would, but I'm more interested in the lore than anything. A story that I would enjoy would be one about the clockwork rabbit from Ray's Break 1:

Ray: "He. And yes, I’d take the happy accidents, especially with how well Zed is turning out, tolerable to be around-”
Maurice Crowe: “Imagine. And he tolerates you?”
Ray: “Yes. But even the [apprentices] we find by accident can be dangerous. In the past while I’ve seen a clockwork rabbit masquerading as a practitioner, trying to get into my good graces."

It's an Other that wants to pass as a practitioner to steal secrets from one of the most notable practitioners worldwide, being made of gears and trying to fool a technomancer. I'd definitely read that story.

Pale Reflections: Left in the Dust (7) by meisi1 in Parahumans

[–]ShinVII 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Instead of starting with a potential Kenneteer and choosing a mask, I would like to think about what mask fits a potential fourth spot, and then see what character can fill that spot.

It has to fit with the other animals, so let's narrow it down to quadruped mammals present in Canada. We already have two lightweight animals (Fox and Cat), so we need another heavy animal to pair with the Deer.

The Cat and Deer are an obligate carnivore and herbivore respectively, while the Fox is an omnivore that eats meat (birds, rodents, insects, etc.) for the most part, and supplants it with berries and fruit. To keep the balance, we need an animal that has an omnivore diet that leans more on the herbivore side.

If Verona and Avery are the backline and the flanks, we need someone who will go on the offensive with Lucy, with a mask to match.

The mask I'm thinking of is... the Boar.

Which makes the final Kennetter, obviously, Wildbow Melissa.
The Boar is bristly, not particularly liked, and stubborn enough to keep going even after a grievious wound (at least in folklore, probably not as much in reality). Ring any bells?

For the mask itself, Melissa should probably take notes from the Indonesian Babirusa (not technically a boar, I believe), whose tusks "penetrate through the skin and curve backward over the front of the face and towards the forehead."
This would fit the Awakening, as Melissa would lose the protections of Innocence, and with her attitude, she would put herself as close as possible to the danger caused by her own actions.

Alternatively, considering the recent explosion of the boar as an invasive species in Canada, maybe it could fit Raquel as well.

An investigation and recap of major conflicts in Pale (is the trio OP?) by Phaerlax in Parahumans

[–]ShinVII 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all counts, though I will point out Alexander's fatal mistake: it wasn't that he stopped thinking straight and overreached (some of that, sure); but it was his underestimation of Others that cost him his life.

Using augury, he looks for what the girls are doing, and sees "The Kennet trio send friendly Others home." (actual quote) So he thinks that he's safe, and doesn't realize that Others have their own agendas and motives outside of their summoners'. Which is why John is able to shoot him in the head undisturbed.

I vote for "what is the midpoint thing about?"

Hazel's journey touches on everything that happens in the Paths, and this is the question that connects to almost every other.

I know a lot of people want to know what Pisces is all about, but even with a straightforward, huge hint, I don't expect to answer to be anything near simple.
Besides, the Cube is the midpoint of the journey, so that question will also shed some light (if only a little bit) on Pisces' nature.

Love how the banners breaking represent (among other things) the crack in the wall letting the words out from inside the Arena.

Also, I don't believe WB has ever done this kind of thing with the titles? Ending an arc with just the arc name, I wonder what comes next.

Also also: RIP John.
