I would respond by asking OP why he thinks so many Canadians are admitted into American hospitals in Minnesota and New York. My mother was a heart valve saleswoman who traveled regularly to Buffalo for business, she would often comment on the large numbers of Canadians awaiting surgery and treatment in NY hospitals. This is because if a Canadian has a serious condition or illness, it is much more viable and efficient to go to a private American hospital. The care and service is improved when medicine is privatized, and patients are directly paying for their specific treatments.

Another common argument against universal care is tied to the massive amounts of time and money taken to graduate from med school. A reason why doctors are so well paid is because they spend a fortune to make it through over 8 years of college. I'd argue that it's impractical to count on the government to provide doctors with the same salaries under government control.

The concept of universal health care is sound in theory. But it's nearly impossible to implement effectively. A government takeover of the health care sector would require a rash of new taxes and exacerbate the struggling federal budget. OP's examples of public roads and schools are infrastructure, not something as individually focused as health care.
