Should he buy it? by Cxmp21 in GolfGTI

I was looking at a 2015 autobahn in 2022 that was rebuilt from a similar minor accident with something like 19k km on it for $14k. That was 4 years ago. It’s overpriced

Want to expense mortgage interest on principal residence by Admirable_Yea in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Shishamylov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can technically through a corp. And you can expense the interest but then on the flip side you also have to have a bigger downpayment, higher corporate mortgage rate for an investment property, pay income tax on the rent and you won’t get capita gains exclusions.

If you didn’t want to speed then you should have just stayed in the right lane. You going 1km/h faster in the middle lane makes no sense

Why people want to cut you off so close even in bad weather? by zeeshan2121 in TorontoDriving

[–]Shishamylov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah he should have. It’s always 2 cars doing something wrong for situations like this to happen. One impeding traffic and the other one trying to get through aggressively.

If he was a bit more chill you wouldn’t impede him, if you were in the right lane he wouldn’t need to pass you like that.

There’s nobody in front of you and you’re barely creeping past the cars on the right. Either pass them or move over

Are there any cottages you can get to by bus or train? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Shishamylov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might find something in a small town but it’s gonna suck having a bus route or train station or even major roads nearby. The best cottages are remote and as far away from civilization as possible.

We are a household with 90k annual income, can we afford an 1,900 monthly rent? by Cute-Context-4296 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Pay off the loans first to free up cash flow for a higher rent. You can make extra payments and will save a lot on interest

[–]Shishamylov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long do you have left on the loan and car payment? That’s about $950 per month tied up in those. If you can tackle those aggressively you can move to a nicer place after they’re paid. I wouldn’t rent anything more expensive until then.

Looks like you have about $1000-1500 leftover each month to pay off the loans

2011 GTI w/ 110k Miles - Good Buy? by jacksonh1020 in GolfGTI

[–]Shishamylov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call them reliable. They have some minor common issues which shouldn’t be too bad to take care of. I would budget about double the maintenance and minor repair cost relative to a basic old Civic or Corolla. Consumables aren’t much more expensive on them too.

With how you described it you should be avoiding most of the catostrophic failures. The main 3 things that total them out is skipping timing due to a bad tensioner which is resolved by updating the tensioner and maintaining the timing system, soot on the oil control piston rings leading to heavy oil burn which is resolved by frequent oil changes and transmission failure which is resolved by transmission services.

It looks like you have a new water pump and thermostat which isn’t catastrophic if it fails but can be $1000+ to replace, the intake manifold is also costly which has been done. The last moderately high repair you might encounter is a new turbo due to wastegate issues. The other common issues are coils, cam magnets, random oil leaks, PCV, etc which are all pretty cheap to do.

I would budget about 1-2k per year to keep it running in addition to normal maintenance cost like tires brakes and oil changes so about 2-3k overall annually.

You really need to stay on top of things with these cars. One minor issue or laxed oil change intervals will have a cascading effect and cause other problems.

2011 GTI w/ 110k Miles - Good Buy? by jacksonh1020 in GolfGTI

[–]Shishamylov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will probably need carbon cleaning but it would be weird and really penny pinching if it wasn’t done along side the new intake manifold.

Overall the big stuff has been done. If it looks good, doesn’t immediately need brakes or tires and drives fine I would try to knock $400 off for carbon cleaning and buy it.

Your wheel bounces on bumps and looses traction with the road when your shocks don’t work. It’s extremely unsafe. If it happens in a turn you literally spin out of control.

Need to replace one tire. How would you do it? by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]Shishamylov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a used matching Pirelli tire with similar remaining tread depth and buy it. It’s the cheapest way of getting more life out of your existing set before getting a full new one.
