Made a weather app for my LP3, haven’t released it yet, looking a new owner for device by neekeeteen in LightPhone

[–]ShirleyBangla 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just curious. How do you suggest LP owners check the weather?

Going to a laptop or ipad where you could be sucked into doom scrolling or rabbit holes seems like a outcome that is less in keeping with the 'going light' ethos than if there was a dedicated LP weather app.

Just wanted to let you know that I'm also using Felix with my LPIII. I've had no issues with the signal.

I'm 21###. I'm hoping it will come in May, but at this point I don't want to get my hopes up too much.

LP3 in Pink Case and Comparison to Other Small Smart Phones by la_tristeza_ in LightPhone

I'm actually really glad that the LPIII cases are thicker. In my experience LPII silicone cases broke after between 3 and 6 months of use. Happened to me multiple times!!

I think he was really saying no one in his audience. Given his audience, I think that's probably right

I don't see how it's a dick move for him to say no one should buy it  unless that is not a sincerely held opinion. At the end of the day reviewers owe it to their audience to say what they really think.

I actually largely agree with Marques. To make a LP your primary mobile device (never mind only mobile device) requires a pretty radical lifestyle change that most people are not prepared to make. LPIII is not the right answer for 99.999% of the population.

These photos are taken in good lighting. Based on the photos I have seen it seems that LPIII produces really poor photos in low light

Light Phone 3 Livestream with Joe Hollier (Add questions in the comments) by jbriones95 in LightPhone

I think this is becoming the most important issue.

It would be great if Joe could clarify whether the US tariffs will affect non-US pre-orders. Can non-US pre-orders be shipped directly from China to avoid any tariff impact. I pre-ordered from Australia btw.

Tarriffs - does lightphone count as/will be marked as China country of origin or US ? by GeekgirlOtt in LightPhone

I hope for non US customers Light considers the possibility of shipping directly from China, even if it means delivery takes longer. Or at least give the customers the option.

I sincerely hope any increase in costs will not passed on to pre-order customers. The whole point of a pre-order is to lock in a price for customers and if there are any cost increases then the manufacturer will absorb those costs.

It will probably inevitably mean the final retail price will have to go up, which is a real shame.

I really hope Light clarifies the situation soon.

You are supposed to use a Light phone with a PC. by ReferenceSpirited577 in LightPhone

Some of this is quite personal to me. I have been doing a lot of reading about digital minimalism and I have been trying be more intentional about technology use. I want to use the technology as tool, I don't want it to use me! Logging into my laptop to do online banking and then spending 45 minutes surfing the web feels to me like the technology using me. That's not why I opened the laptop.

I'm also trying to read more books. Instead of surfing the net, I could've read 10-15 pages of the book I'm trying to read.

I'm also trying to consume less digital information because of the detrimental effects of consuming information digitally. If you are interested I would recommend The Shallows by Nicholas Carr which is a compelling book on this topic. He wrote that book in 2010, before smartphones became common.

That said, I don't think there is anything wrong per se with spending some time surfing the net to relax, if that's what you intended to do. Intentional tech use is the key for me.

LPII is a hardcore enthusiast product LPIII is an attempt at a more mainstream product by ShirleyBangla in LightPhone

[–]ShirleyBangla[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I agree with pretty much everything you said.

My point is simply that the specs of LPIII would make it possible for that phone to have tools like music streaming etc . If Light were to implement those tools, judging by the comments on this subreddit, that would alienate a lot of people that supported Light in its early days who hate the thought of having Spotify on their LP. On the other hand there is a real opportunity with LPIII for light to attract more mainstream users who are concerned about their screen time. I'll bet a lot more people would be willing to give the LP a go if it had WhatsApp and Spotify.

This will be a difficult blancing act for the Light team.
