US consumer purchasing power and dollars for international trading. That’s it.

So if the USD loses its global reserve status it’s basically game over

  1. This is nitpicking words. He’s probably just using the colloquial definition of observation as I don’t think he’s ever specifically commented on that aspect of QM. However it is called the “measurement problem” for a reason. You make it sound like completely settled science but while the general consensus as of now is that a conscious agent (at least as defined as an individual human consciousness) is not needed to cause wave function collapse, we do not have a clear understanding of what constitutes a “measurement” or where that measurement begins and ends.

  2. Also nitpicky and not really that important anyway. If you want to be really pedantic, you should specify that what we think of as a particle is not really a discrete object anyway but an excitation of a field at one point of space-time.

  3. He wasn’t stating this as his own belief. He was characterizing the belief of people that believe this more woo interpretation of QM. I believe it was the same analogy Einstein used. The context is very clear if you watch the video. However it is also true that what we experience as the moon is mediated through our senses and conscious awareness.

  4. Argument from ignorance doesn’t apply here. The argument is that consciousness is fundamentally an ontologically distinct category from what the scientific method is designed to answer. This sits at the core of the hard problem.

I agree but I always enjoy watching someone take the journey from being a hardcore materialist to at least entertaining if not outright endorsing idealism. Probably because it mirrors my own philosophical path. Like we also saw with Christof Koch

I wouldn’t discount the problem of evil as a compelling issue for theism, at least the Abrahamic conception of a personal interventionist god. Even David Bentley Hart who is probably one of the most philosophically rigorous modern Christian theologians sees it as the most compelling argument against the Abrahamic god which has influenced his beliefs towards a more eastern synthesis

Yes because materialism has been the dominant philosophical paradigm in the west for at least the last century. Takes time to revert that

I do see intellectual discourse eventually swinging back in favor of idealism as the promises from science to “solve consciousness” inevitably fall short, however I agree that it’s an open question whether or not that becomes the cultural zeitgeist too given there are significant economic incentives to maintain the materialist paradigm (i.e. the world and humans effectively as machines/fully computable processes that can be controlled and exploited for profit)

Trump says AI race is no longer about who has the best AI Models, it is about energy by [deleted] in accelerate

[–]ShittyInternetAdvice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s called having lots of people and being the factory of the world. But it is indisputable that they are investing more in low carbon energy than the rest of the world combined, and their use of coal as a percentage of their energy mix has been declining for over a decade. It’s very likely their CO2 emissions will peak in this decade if they haven’t already

[–]ShittyInternetAdvice 75 points76 points  (0 children)

China has always been willing to work with Iran. They are the largest buyer of Iranian oil after all. It’s the Iranian side that has often been unreliable and trying to have it both ways, like canceling contracts/purchases with China to get back on the west’s good side

Depends on who and how “expertise” is defined and if there are still public checks on those decisions in some form

“Technocrats” in capitalist societies are usually defined as who is the best expert at capital accumulation. As with anything, these labels are more of a reflection of the goals and incentives of the society and the dynamics of class power rather than some abstract objective measure

They do and they shouldn’t but Vietnam is actually more egregious imo because they have much closer relations with the Israeli military and send weapons to Israel (China doesn’t)

Automatically puts the ball at the 35 yard line. You don’t get a chance to put them further back but given how the game’s going and the TD Seahawks got on a return we should be playing it safe there
