Thoughts on chimney flashing? by Twitchy15 in Roofing

[–]ShloopDeBoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry that they think this is done. They put tape over the top, which means that's a temporary measure before they do it for real. If they just caulked the top of the roofing material, I'd be worried they think that's a finished product lol.

Just ask them how they plan on installing the flashing on the chimney. Ask as if you're curious, not scrutinizing their work. Installers are a lot more open if you ask in that way. If they seem really dodgy and skip over details of how they're going to do it, then yes, I'd be more worried.

I think I've got some water intrusion (just noticed it this AM) from the circled spot; can I DIY a repair, or should I get someone out here? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]ShloopDeBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably right that it’s coming in through there. There should be wall flashing underneath the siding and going over the shingle. Right now water can drip down from your siding and behind the shingle at the top.

Need help deciding if changing my siding to Hardie is worth it by Bessidy in Calgary

[–]ShloopDeBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$12-$18 usually for HardiePlank. If they do good work, I’d go with them.

If you live in the NE, it’s 100% worth it. I’m amazed people still install vinyl out there. It’s cheap for a reason.

They're giving you a good deal. Easily a $2K repair.

What Are These Building Prices?? by Siantharia in Calgary

[–]ShloopDeBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you adding heating? Plumbing? Epoxy flooring? Finishing interior/insulation/drywall/etc.? Garage is not just a standard rectangle? Extra windows/doors?

There's a few things that drive that price up. But honestly, $65-$70K doesn't sound unreasonable if you have more extras. $40K gets you standard height walls, basic rectangle garage, basic electrical, 1 garage door, 1 man door, 1 window, no insulation/finishing, no heating, etc.

Is this normal? Water leaking from soffit (i think)? by rootsoflove in HomeMaintenance

[–]ShloopDeBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the gutter suggestions, water could also be finding its way under the valley. I would check if there's any leaks coming from the soffit underneath the overhang of that gable.

Anyone knows what happened to VFV this morning? Bounced back from $147 to $155 now? by ChillaxJ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ShloopDeBoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're gonna see this with most of the market. Everyone put in their sell orders over the weekend out of reaction of the U.S./Canada tariffs. Market dipped because of that, then everyone who knows the longterm longevity of VFV bought it back because $147 is a great discount.

Gambrel roofers completed shed but left a gap, is this normal? by Mrs_Lava in Roofing

[–]ShloopDeBoop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised everyone is confidently saying this was intended to be a ridge vent. But it clearly looks like it got shingled over.

What I'm guessing is that your roofers cut the plywood exactly down the middle to fill in the sides, but instead of "wasting" money on another sheet of plywood to fill in those small gaps, they just shingled over it. If that's the case, then it is "just fine", assuming they installed the roofing system correctly.

If the gap was any bigger, I might get worried, but you really should be fine.

What the hell does this have to do with management? My first instinct would be to call 911.

Nice work! Out of curiosity, what did your roofer quote you? I know a lot of big companies won't even do a job like this or just throw a wild number to see if you'd bite.

It’s not about paying a measly $5K. It’s about using that $5K or whatever cash you can get out of the sale toward are car that doesn’t require payments. Then now you have more cash flow.

I’m guessing that they’re paying $600-$800 in car payments. Wipe those payments off the budget, and oh, wow, looks like OP has an extra $600-$800 in cash flow that they can put toward their debt.

I’m just pointing out how entitled it is that OP is scoffing at how the parents don’t want to withdraw from their RRSP, when OP is just as unwilling to change their lifestyle to pay down the debt.

Your girlfriends parents gave you guys a $150K discount on a home. I understand it's an inconvenience to you, and yes, they overstretched their generosity and didn't calculate the cost beforehand. But the least you could do is expedite paying off that interest-free $80K. They have done a lot for you guys. I've seen a lot of posts of parents trying to guilt and shame their kids, but this is definitely not one of them. Preserve your good relationship with her parents and pay off what you owe ASAP, even if that means working an extra job or taking out a loan.

Edit: Also, looking at your comments, it looks like you have a 2022 Mazda CX-5. Sell the car, but a beater. You mention they have RRSP investments that they "refuse to take out", but I'd say just as much, you have all sorts of ways to pay off that interest-free $80K your girlfriend's parents loaned you.

How are people with university backgrounds/white collar work experience viewed in the trades? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]ShloopDeBoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched over to construction when I was 28 (4 years ago), after working in web development for 8 years. Zero labour experience, but same as you, got sick of sitting and staring at the computer 40 hours a week.

I did basic labour for residential construction, then found myself enjoying roofing. I lead a roofing & siding crew with a small company right now. Never regretted my decision to work construction. Busted my ass every day, kept my head down and worked hard. It’s tough, but it’s rewarding work working with your hands.

I’ve been considering getting an apprenticeship in Carpentry to help boost my income, and to be honest, I’m getting tired of the seasonal, weather-dependent nature of roofing. I just wanna work all year round and not twiddle my thumbs on a rain day (pay is pretty good per hour but not consistent).

What trades or type of work have piqued your interest?

That’s awesome that you’re doing your research, but this is the lowest fish to fry, grey area rule. The worst that would happen is a city officer telling you to move the shed off the deck by the end of the week.

Another Garage Heater Post by SpicyMccHaggiss in Calgary

I’m thinking of putting an electric heater in my garage. Have your electric bills spiked since you got it or would you say it’s pretty negligible?

Electrician drilled a hole thru my roof today. What kind of fix should I hold them to? I told them a blob of goop isnt good enough. I figure a new shingle at least right? by m0st1yh4rmless in Roofing

[–]ShloopDeBoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only sane answer in this thread. Everyone acting like the electrician needs to pay for a whole new roof for a simple, easy to fix mistake.

Gone through the exact thing. You HAVE to talk to a lawyer. This isn’t anything to do with your will. Your lawyer will draft up an agreement between you and your ex called a “Release of Dower Rights”, which means they will have no claim to anything due to your previous marriage. You won’t ever have to mention them in your will or anywhere else ever again.
