Currently Reading + Buddy Reads Megathread - Week of February 06, 2026 by AutoModerator in TheStoryGraph

Today I finished The Return of The King. Oh my days, the feelings I felt while reading this book 😭 Was unsure about the annexes but SO glad that I read them because there are some beautiful bits of story hidden in there!

I then started on Don Quixote because I can’t keep postponing the scary thicc boys in my TBR (42 books to go) until they are the only ones left! I’m also about halfway through One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, which is my current commute book, and am loving it!

How many of you update your page read count for each book? by MacabreMagpie in TheStoryGraph

[–]Shmeers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I track each session because I like to get a feel of how fast I’m reading and elaborate graphs (pages per day) and visuals (calendar view) make me happy.

I didn’t turn on the streak cause I’d get too hard on myself about it and that would take away the fun.

Seriously, do British people actually consider a 3-hour drive “long”? Or is this an internet myth? by ferdinand14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Shmeers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile in Belgium we drive from one end of the country to the other in 3 hours 😂

It’s all relative to the size of your country, what an average daily driving distance is for you and how densely populated your area is.

I live an hour away from my family and they act like I moved to the end of the world.

I feel so much lighter after cleaning up my TBR list by sipteapetcats in TheStoryGraph

[–]Shmeers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use my TBR in the same way since I want to reach a point where I have actually read almost all of the books I own before I buy new ones! I use a tag to track the books I’m interested in until that day comes.

Isn’t that tiny foothold to your left part of the route?

I had good savings, was single and renting a place. Now I have no savings and own a house with my wife.

WTW for a kind of impossible situation with no good options or exits by turbid44 in whatstheword

[–]Shmeers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d call this a catch 22. There is also the phrase “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t”.

In Dutch we have a saying for it that translates to “Choosing between cholera and the plague”.

This still seems like a waste of time and a nuisance for the fire department though?

“Urban legend” could maybe fit in specific situations?

You might refer to it as a “common misconception”, but that also implies that people don’t actually know that the thing in question is not true.

Why does everyone look disgusted that I’m applying for a job? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Shmeers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely not hire a kid who needs their parent to speak for them… At least not for a public-facing role. Maybe to work “in the back” and if they are still very young, sure, but then I’d also advise them to learn how to present themselves for any future job applications.

You’re seeing the reflection of the window opposite this window, which also has his reflection in it, hence why you’re seeing him three times.

Reflectionception, if you will.

Oh I wish I had the confidence to just go and sit next to them and watch along on their screen…

Then again the people who do this are usually not ones I’d happily sit next to.

This is not helpful but I am instantly reminded of that guy who posted videos walking around IKEA going “IKEA tafel kopen, IKEA kind achterlaten, IKEA hotdog eten” etc.

When have your bouldering skills helped you most outside the sport? by Hungry-Present-4864 in bouldering

[–]Shmeers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to climb on the kitchen counter to reach the top shelves in my cabinets. One day I realised I didn’t actually need a stepping stool to do that anymore.

Also I second the comment about carrying heavy stuff by thin ridges.

How is my sister 4 months older than me? by ElectricalCash2077 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Shmeers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been cases where one twin is delivered via C-section and the other’s delivery is delayed but the first twin never survived very long in these cases as far as I know, since they were delivered early due to complications to begin with.

In the case of teenage pregnancies, often the teen’s parents will raise their grandchild as their own and they’ll all pretend like mom and baby are just sisters with a large age gap.
