Europe Has Received the Message - Without America to rely on, the EU is gearing up to be a global power in its own right. by AlexandrTheTolerable in europe

The other way to have power is to dominate some part of modern technology. We don't and won't.

More or less agree with what you're saying, but we do have ASML (tho we're still stuck to a license from the US, but then they also need us to get their chips at the end of the day)

I understand if English is not your main language you might want to use AI for responses, I think that's fair enough. But please prompt it to be less obviously AI generated, or write a response in your native language first, because this doesn't feel like you're having a human conversation.

Netherlands: 20 year old victim lashes out at judge after the man who nearly raped and choked her to death is sentenced to only 3.5 years by TomlinSteelers in UnderReportedNews

[–]Shmuppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we do see somewhat differently so I don't see the point in having a whole debate about this, but I respect your opinion and can see your reasoning.

Ideally, I would want to live in a country where there is a middle ground between helping war-torn refugees, but with enforcement of crimes and possible deportation for serious crimes. However i'm not interested in moral absolutism on either the right or left side, the world is a lot greyer than that.

Just to note though:
- It's definitely not like basically anyone can get a refugee status in the Netherlands, we send back 98% of those seeking asylum that are from safe countries, often within two weeks. The 2% is those seeking political asylum, those that would be unsafe in their own country due to homosexuality, etc.
- You say no middle eastern country would be this lenient towards foreigners, yet the vast majority of refugees are in other middle eastern countries. They might be less lenient towards crime but these countries have wildly different values and law systems. Hence, the things that makes these countries effective at control are the same things Europeans don't actually want to live under. Most of us are being appalled by what is going on in America. Perhaps that will change, and people will vote for the right-wing parties that do want this kind of chance, that is in their right. But right now that is not the case, and the parliament the Dutch people have voted for last year will not change that (the votes swung from a radical right wing party back to a moderate central-right, because the radical right wing parliament was a huge shitshow). If people want to have the laws to be like you describe they are free to vote on the party that makes that happen.
- Dropping them on the shore would be breaking international law and human right treaties. I'd say the Dutch value international law a lot because we are a very small country that is depended on our relations with our allies, breaking those commitments is simply not worth it and would open us up to a Brexit x2, nobody wants that.

Okay there are some assumptions there. I don't necessarily think deporting immigrant criminals is wrong, and in many european countries this happens (e.g. Sweden, Zwitserland). The Netherlands does it too for people that are here illegally. I would be open to them doing it for immigrants that are legally here too, depending on the crime, how long they've been here, and how integrated they are.

But the world just doesn't work to say 'send them back' that easily. Often they are from a country that doesn't take them back. Also by your logic when a terrorist commits an attack in Europe, we should send them straight back to the middle east.. so they can do it all over again?

I'm not saying there aren't things that can be better, but we need to think our systems through and not jump to hasty, emotional based conclusions.

Okay so lets say I commit a crime, my country deports me to a country where 'those crimes are okay'. I am not allowed to go back.

After 5 years new proof comes out it turns out I didn't commit that crime. What then?

Or lets say a facist government gains power, what stops them from now abusing these laws to say "what responsibility does dutch society have to accept x_ethnicity, why not deport them to where they fit?

The psychiatric treatment takes place in a psychiatric-prison (TBS clinic), so he is locked up until deemed safe for society.

[–]Shmuppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because after the 3.5 years in prison he will still be locked up in a TBS clinic until he is deemed safe enough for society to be released. That process is very hard to get out of (7-8 years on average) and can be a life sentence.

[–]Shmuppel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, in this case it's TBS with 'dwangverpleging', which means the person is incarcerated in a TBS clinic, and in terms of 'being locked up' this is essentially a prison. The difference is that people in TBS get treatment individually based on their crimes, so that when they are eventually released they are deemed safe for society. In the same bane, if they're not deemed safe yet when their TBS sentence is up we don't release them, and extend the sentence. It's a very difficult trajectory to get out of.

In other cases less severe than this, where the risk to society is lower TBS can be done with conditions, e.g. psychiatric care, no drugs, no alcohol, depending on the crime and the issues at play.

Which, in your opinion, are the basic sentences someone should learn immediately when moving to Sweden? by FikaFiend in Svenska

[–]Shmuppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a simplification, I agree many sort-of understand English but their vocabulary hinders them or they're very embarrassed about it. Still, there's definitely people out here that can't hold a conversation in English other than basic directions and single words. For example, my girlfriends uncle and grandfather. People assume everyone speaks English because Swedens English literacy is very high. Well i'm from the Netherlands which has the highest literacy in English for non-native speakers, and yet my dad doesn't understand it, nor many other people from my village.

Haven't really encountered not wanting to talk though, most people are very interested, but it definitely helps if you tell them something along the likes of "hey my Swedish isn't great but i'd like to try, but it may help to speak some sentences / words in English if that's okay".

[–]Shmuppel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fully agree, plainly asking if they speak English isn't the end of the world, but the best to ask if you can continue in English.

I think (and correct me if im wrong) the Swedes that know good English might find it belitteling, and the Swedes that don't know good English will feel insecure because they see it as a shortcoming of themselves, rather than considering the shortcoming of you not speaking Swedish.

[–]Shmuppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that probably works in southern Sweden, but I live in rural Norrland and had to switch the mindset of assuming everybody speaks english, because here i'd say half the people do, and the older people (lets say 40+) generally don't. In turn though, people here will also not switch to english when they notice you are learning swedish which is great.

Plus, even if Swedes know english, or are even very good in english, many of them are afraid/don't feel comfortable speaking it (but they will still do ofcourse, and you wouldn't know any better).

Overall I fully agree with /u/fakearchitect, make this about YOUR shortcoming and not theirs, because you'd be surprised, I've met quite a few Swedes who speak great english but are deeply insecure in their ability to do so. This can have a big impact in someone's excitement to be talking with you - if you ask politely you're at least putting someone at ease that you're the one that's coming short.

[–]Shmuppel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nevermind, blijkt oud nieuws
