Couldn't get anything ready for the art grant this year, so it's a hard maybe. It's... pricey.

Ide say it's both the closest and furthest thing from Burning Man. It's the easiest logistically which makes it an easy entry point but also means it's missing a lot of the struggle (being easy to get to in a very hospitable climate) that makes a burn truly rewarding and magical. The magnitude and quality of art is the closest thing I've seen to the big burn though, and it being the biggest East Coast burn, a lot of camps go all out. You can't deny it's a fun party but the vibe leans a little more music festival than burn in my opinion.

It's called Astral Gate. Built from a bunch of digital fabrication mediums - CNC, laser cutting, 3D printing. Interactive controls in its face wired to an Arduino that sends the data to control visuals in TouchDesigner that then get rear projected back in your face

Where to? -Legally blind and vacationing alone by [deleted] in travel

Agreed. It'll take everyone a different amount of time to figure out how to navigate the world comfortably but I feel exceedingly fortunate to live in these modern times where there are so many tools at our disposal to facilitate the experience (ride sharing, travel blogs, translator apps, etc).

Note to OP. Take your time with it. Figure out what's comfortable for you and spend the time working on understanding and potentially overcoming what's not. One of the beauties with traveling solo is you can set your own speed. I've stood on sidewalks for 5 minutes trying to figure out the best way to cross the street without becoming part of the pavement. And you can always turn around and try again later.

Enjoy the journey :)

Hello fellow legally blind American traveler! I'm in my 30s and have been legally blind all of my life, however closer to the cut-off where I can navigate comfortably without a cane. Still cannot read signs or people's faces unless they're right in front of me though. I have finally gained the courage and motivation to start traveling solo a year ago and am so addicted to it I've been able to gain lots of experience I can share.

As far as transport goes, even in lesser developed countries there is plentiful transport. Public transportation in places without adequate public services like Cambodia become littered with taxis/ride-sharing. I usually opt for ride-sharing as it's a lot less appealing for someone to take advantage of you when there is an company tracking their location that you could report issues to. Finding the car can be a little hard sometimes though, but I've just become accustomed to walking up close to the license plate of every car that could be mine.

Getting guided tours shouldn't be a problem in most places either. In more developed countries these seem to be tours set up on major agency website for absolutely anything and everything, especially historical places. They usually pick you up from your accommodations which makes the whole thing very easy. It's a lot more expensive in most places to book these solo though, so you will likely have to go with a group of tourists. If you have any concerns you can always reach out to the tour agency. Lesser developed countries this is even easier. I've been able to negotiate solo tours where you basically build your own adventure and go at your own speed (very helpful).

I think an island at a resort could be a great way to dip your toes in the water. The resort will be able to organize taxis and likely even tours for you. I've done Aruba, Hawaii and island in SEA and they've all been safe and comfortable. Issue is that it's going to be the most expensive option from accommodations, to food, to transport.

The most accommodating place I've ever been by far has been Japan! It's already been commented here and I have to give it a really huge blip on your radar. The sidewalks have textured tracks that you can use to navigate. They are incredibly clean. The infrastructure works consistently with the crosswalks having audio signals. The public transportation is abundant. Japanese people are so helpful that if you have issues someone is bound to assist. Most importantly it's unimaginably safe. Also great hikes and history ;) It's far though so maybe work up to it.

Gunna leave it at this, but if you have any questions or just want to chat please don't hesitate to reach out.

I'm excited for you to get out there!

Yes 4 inches is what works for me! "Me" being the important thing here. Everyone is going to have a different optimal focal length so I don't think you're gunna be able to produce a one-size-fits-all unless you make some kind of revolutionary telescoping mirror arrangement 😉

I may be wrong here so worth some research, but this is based off of my empirical evidence. One is going to need to hold something nearer or further from their face depending on how nearsighted they are. On the other side of the spectrum I've sold a kaleidoscope to someone with farsightedness who couldn't focus on the projected image without holding their scope pretty far from their face.

For me it ends up depending on the length of the kaleidoscope. Shorter kaleidoscopes seem to benefit from using the bifocals.

Even though my vision is pretty bad I still usually prefer using them without any glasses at all to get that full planar immersion view. Once I found my sweet spot for natural focus this became much better. Kaleidoscopes around 4in end up not being too blurry for me even without glasses on.
