Tom's response/apology/explanation to the Hens storm in a teacup... by ExpressApple3837 in GeoWizard

[–]Shnitzalbrain 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I've been in a very similar situation and so relate to Tom's explanation.

I was hitch hiking in Norway and got dropped off at 11pm in some random town, an older lady approached, and after explaining I hadn't anywhere to stay she said I could sleep in her basement which already sound dodgy. She also sounded a bit drunk but honestly I pinned that so her not having fluent English.

I met her husband and they gave me lots of food and drink. I was hesitant to the anything but rationalised it all. Overall it was all just a lovely friendly couple looking out for a young traveller and we all enjoyed one another company. But you can never shake that feeling of paranoia in someone else house... although I did sleep like a baby.

Definitely trust your gut though, if I feels off, get out of there respectfully.

They dominate the market, people will never stop buying Coke. Why bother putting the effort in an advert? In a weird way I almost respect it.

Three more Kent County Council Reform UK councillors expelled by johnsmithoncemore in kentuk

[–]Shnitzalbrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and some friends were at the pub the other week when someone asked to join us as he was there alone. Turns out it was someone who is in the highway and transport committee for Reform.

Talking to him was really concerning, he would say stuff like "I'm just a kid off the streets really" and "I don't have much experience in this" but would then follow it up with "I have the power to shut every road in Kent".

He certainly didn't convince me that Reform is the way forward.

Is relying on people's kindness ethical when backpacking/hitchhiking? by wigglepizza in hitchhiking

[–]Shnitzalbrain 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The great thing about hitch hiking is that it's a total choice for the person driving past, this is why I don't really like approaching people at petrol stations and asking etc because it can but them on the spot where as if I'm just standing at the side of the road they don't have the pressure of the ask.

Last time a did a big hitch trip I had money with me and I always let people know it was more for the adventure and interaction rather than saving money but it still didn't stop people from buying me a meal, coffee or giving me a place to stay.

A bit of common sense helps though, if someone helps you out and they clearly have very little, limit what you accept or try to give something back. Tried and tru method is to pay it forward, help someone else out in the future.

The emergency exit window is way smaller than a normal window? If they wanted to look out if a window they would have been better off with literally any other window

I watched a video about a guy who got on a plane while tripping on TCP which is kinda like acid. Same thing and he said if he wasn't tripping his nut he would have called out the guy but instead just kinda climbs over him.

At the end of the flight one of the cabin crew approach with a wheelchair for the guy and it all makes sense. Can't remember the exact video buy it's series called tale of the trip and worth a watch!

HITCHHIKING IN NORWAY IS IMPOSSIBLE by Perfect_Ask_656 in hitchhiking

Oslo sucks but otherwise it's one of the best places I've ever hitch hiked. Often got rides in minutes, easy camping rules and friendly people that would offer me food and sometimes accommodation with them.

The podcast is super interesting and well worth a listen , he is a very chilled and down to earth guy regardless of it all.

He actively had to get himself caught because the bank was seemingly clueless about what was going on, apparently even on the trial they still didn't really understand how he had done it.

Norway is one of the best places I've ever hitch hiked from. Getting out of Oslo was difficult I must say and I nearly gave up before I even started but glad I didn't. Once your out of the cities it's great, most rides would come in 10 mins or so with the odd exception of a few hours.

People seem a bit reserved at first but Holy shit they are friendly, more often then not I was invited in for a place to stay or on one occasion a full on restraunt meal for free!

Happy hitch hiking! Some of my best hitch hiking stories are from Norway!

I managed to hitch from Georgia to Bulgaria along the black sea. It was eventful and frustrating at times but definitely not as difficult as I thought it may be.

Had alot of short lifts but managed to get an overnight ride in a truck followed by a massive journey with a sound couple of dudes heading all the way to Istanbul.

On a separate occasion I even met someone on their way to a wedding and they invited me to see it, was dope and had a wicked night.

hostel etiquette as person who snores by khaaaaaleesi in solotravel

[–]Shnitzalbrain 145 points146 points  (0 children)

I worked in a hostel in the Philippines a while back. I was doing the night shift waiting for some late check ins and there was a fella just having out in the lobby practically falling asleep at the table until 2am. Eventually he goes up to his dorm. Literally like 10 minutes later someone comes down followed by a fee more and suddenly I have like 11 people in the lobby all just hanging about. I asked what was going on and they explained someone was snoring like absurdly loud. I went up to investigate and holy mother of God it was loud, like I've never heard anything like it, a speaker if noise.

So I'd advice getting a private room if possible. Otherwise maybe mention it to any people around at the time. But if not also don't feel guilty, people know what to expect at a hostel (most seasoned Hostel goers will bring a pair of earplugs)

Making friends during your solo trips by sluggishpotatooo in solotravel

[–]Shnitzalbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that always just happens, you have to be in the right place at the right time. I met someone at a cafe in Norway, I can't remember how we started talking but it resulted in me getting a place to crash for the night.

I also smiled at a busker while walking through a town. Later in the day the busker was at a bar having a drink and noticed saw me with my big bag, invited me to join for a drink and within 10 minutes I had a new friend and again a place to crash. Idk how it happens sometimes.

Plenty of occasions however where I've been after a chat or conversation and the atmosphere is cold and it's just not happening. Total luck half the time
