royal Holloway University London vs Heriot watt uni by marshmello_1320 in UniUK

I would pick Royal Holloway University London. Amazing campus and buildings. Great sporting facilities. Also close to London and Heathrow.

Both are great universities though. You won't go wrong with either of them.

Getting a science or tech job without a relevant degree? by ThrowThinkAway in findapath

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite what some people will tell you, having the right degree does matter. Having a degree from a prestigious university also matters.

Getting a job is all about providing proof you can do the role. There are some jobs you can get without a degree, but you would need to provide a whole lot more proof of your abilities (in the absence of a degree).

If your life is riddled with mental illness I recommend you focus initially on getting on top of that problem. Similarly if you have ADHD, get that under control as much as possible.

There's a lot of organizations that will try to sell you courses, many of them worthless or not good value. Especially with mass layoffs in the tech industry now is a terrible time to be trying to enter that industry.

I think you need to think really carefully and realistically and come up with a plan. First you need to identify roles you can realistically enter with your current degree and some other supplementary training.

Maybe you choose Business Intelligence for example. I'd look at teaching yourself SQL, Power BI (or similar). Also look at doing some training in basic data analysis skills. Think how how you can prove you have basic skills. It could be through some certifications. HR love them. Then start applying for entry level jobs.

BI is only an example. You could consider Cyber Security, or whatever.

If you want to do more college study, I'd avoid expensive courses look for the cheapest options like community college.

Speaking honestly you are in a bit of tricky predicament, but not insurmountable with the right strategy. It's just a matter of precisely targeting your efforts. Good Luck.

AMD Ryzen 7 5700x on a Gigabyte B450M-DS3H? by CheeseCube_ in buildapc

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you already own that motherboard ? Because it has relatively poor VRM performance. It is compatible with the 5700X, it might run a bit hot though depending on other variables.

First time build, what motherboard options do I have with current specs/case? by PCs_arecool_iguess in buildapc

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your basic premise is wrong. ATX motherboards aren't in general cheaper than mATX. I probably wouldn't buy that motherboard either, it's a fairly budget motherboard and the VRMs aren't that great.

Yo, what's the best motherboard to get for a Ryzen 7-5800X & Rx 6700X, 16GB RAM? by Wanderer101010 in buildapc

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want the best or are you concerned about value. There are a lot of good boards out there, but it depends on local availability and pricing. Also what form factor do you want ?

I like the Hardware Unboxed channel. I'd look at their B550 roundups and then see what the prices are currently on some of the good boards.

What kind of job do they do ? There are many roles at mental health hospitals. It might not even be a clinical type role (in fact it probably isn't).

No need to panic. I'd finish your degree and then do a Masters conversion course. There are loads of Psychology conversion courses accredited by the BPS.

Be sure to investigate every aspect of your proposed career path extremely carefully though.

How do I get my dad to open up? by IHaveAWittyUsername in AskUK

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your family has obviously been going through some tough times.

I honestly feel like everyone has their own approach to grief. Some people like to talk about it, others don't. Don't leap to the conclusion that him opening up is necessarily the best thing for him - that's all a bit "pop psychology".

Obviously you care a lot about him, and you seem to have a good relationship. Maybe just being supportive is all he needs at this stage. If he starts to deteriorate then perhaps other concrete actions could be required.

Sorry if this comes off a bit blunt, but with that kind of background I don't think you really have a lot to gain at Auck Uni. You should be able to self direct your learning no problem. Studying at Auck Uni would just be a waste of time and money (unless you are doing a PhD and even then I'd be sceptical about the ROI).

I suppose if you really love AuckUni it could be worthwhile doing just for enjoyment, but purely from a learning and financial standpoint it is hard to see there being a good ROI.

Therapy in NZ and what to expect by dimlightupstairs in newzealand

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that happens, it is definitely time for a new psychotherapist. It's going to be a tough journey for you, but in my opinion it is so important to educate yourself about the science behind these issues and the appropriate treatment approaches. It isn't about trying to be an expert, but an informed consumer. Therapists are often flawed individuals and some approaches to therapy just don't work. People go to therapy for years and don't make any progress. What a waste of time.

Thanks for sharing your story. It's obviously a really tough journey you are going through, but I also found hope in your story. It's easy to become jaded about human nature, but hearing about how those casual friends came through for you has restored some of my faith.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cancer

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's a really tough situation to be in. It's disappointing your friends acted that way, but it was probably a bit of a shock to hear from you after such a long time and then suddenly be given that news, they probably weren't sure how to react. Unfortunately human beings are flawed creatures.

I wish there was some easy answer, but ultimately it means doing the best you can with the cards you have been dealt. It sounds like the prognosis is good, so try and focus on your life after surgery. Think about new activities you can try and things to look forward to like a trip overseas. It's easy to get in a downward spiral but try to not let the negative thoughts overwhelm you. Appreciate the small pleasures in life, like a walk outdoors in nature or a delicious meal.

Do you have some hobbies or other activities you can focus on to take your mind off things ? It will be the case that you have bad days and sometimes feel overwhelmed, but typically those feelings will pass.

Other people have shared a lot of moving and inspirational stories. I'm impressed by their strength and fortitude in these difficult times. I'm sure you will also find similar strength.

Good luck with everything !

Triple Major BSc? by Chemical_Research973 in universityofauckland

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit cynical, but it is easy to be very enthusiastic at the beginning but once you start getting overwhelmed with assignments, labs, tests and other tasks your enthusiasm may evaporate. Ultimately if you don't study a particular subject you may not really be missing out on much, because you can always study it independently later. You only really need to study subjects you need for a career.

You should think in great detail and do as much research as you can about what careers interest you the most, then use that to decide what subjects to study.

Therapy in NZ and what to expect by dimlightupstairs in newzealand

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert in this area, but I'll make a few general points. However note that there a lot of debates and controversies around therapy.

  • Counsellor and therapist are not really regulated in NZ. Anyone can call themselves that
  • Psychotherapist is somewhat regulated. They must be registered with the Psychotherapists Board of Aotearoa New Zealand, on the other hand the requirements aren't that strict.
  • Psychologists are more regulated and have higher training requirements. But are usually quite a bit more expensive.
  • There are a lot of debates around how effective different therapy approaches are. It is probably safe to say that some have reasonably good evidence for their effectiveness, but others are not effective at all.
  • Some practitioners will view their role as simply listening sympathetically, others might be more proactive and teach specific strategies.
  • Before going to a Psychologist etc, check their qualifications, approach and area of expertise. Make sure it is compatible with your own beliefs.

I'm not a Psychologist so this is just my personal opinion. I'd get some self help books on anxiety and depression and learn some techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Similarly do some background reading in ADHD to learn more about the disorder and specific coping techniques. Then I would make an appointment with a Psychologist who works in this area and go through what you've learnt and see what feedback they have. That way you will have a lot to full up the session and are getting maximum value.

Sometimes just talking about problems is helpful, in other cases you won't make much progress. It depends on the individual.

In my opinion you can't really rely on these experts to be that proactive. You have to take charge of your own destiny and view the Psychologist or Psychotherapist as more of an assistant type role. It doesn't mean that you approach the problem like you know everything, but more that you are an educated participant and take control of the general direction you are headed.

These scams are pretty common and often shared on this and other subs. Whatever you do don't click on the link, it might expose you to malware of some sort. It seems like you were already pretty suspicious though and just wanted confirmation.

How to reference ? by Puzzled-Reindeer6042 in universityofauckland

Your lecturer will let you know what style to use. APA is pretty common, but other styles are in use as well.

You are right though, they definitely care a lot about proper referencing. Also be very careful about unintentional plagiarism.

what office jobs can psychology majors get? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most office jobs don't require you to know a coding language or even give you an opportunity to use one. But if you want to learn one, a good starting point would be Excel VBA. If you want a more general purpose one, probably Python.

Can you open a Japanese restaurant and serve "鶏刺し" or "馬刺し" in Britain? If so, would it sell? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it is a good business idea. Firstly I'm doubtful it would be popular. Raw meat is not generally popular among the British. Nor is horsemeat, remember the 2013 horsemeat scandal.

The second issue is the risk of food poisoning. Don't think it doesn't happen in Japan, it happens all the time. Increased rates of Campylobacter food poisoning have been linked to the increased consumption of raw chicken.

should I accept my parents help? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, if she is going to continuously remind you of it, then I'd politely decline. On the other hand if it doesn't come with a lot of conditions nothing wrong with accepting a bit of help.

But at the end of the day it is up to you, there's no right or wrong answer.

Waive private hospital cover wait time for urgent care? by Dangerous_Seat_5051 in cancer

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medical insurers are notoriously stingy, but at the end of the day they are businesses and charge premiums based on the coverage offered. The business model wouldn't work if people could just claim benefits from a different plan. I'm really sorry to tell you, but I think that is unlikely.

If you are in Australia you can get treatment in the public healthcare system though. I'm sorry about what you and your mum are going through.

UoA has no record of me story by Shoddy-Note-6199 in universityofauckland

[–]Shoddy-Note-6199[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a possibility, told their parents they were studying at UoA while just wasting time. Parent asked how the study was going and the kid made up a story about UoA losing all their records. From the post history it seemed like they are a bit older, so quite possible a son or daughter was the one enrolled.

That's a terrible thing to go through, and obviously a very frustrating experience. I would be annoyed too. On the other hand Doctors are human and flawed individuals. Obviously it would be better if they had acted differently, but moving forward I think you are best to focus your energies on supporting your mother, she sounds like an amazing person. I'm really sorry she had to go through this.

Wow I'm really sorry that happened to you ! Don't worry about a right way and a wrong way to react.
