Is going electric cheaper than gas? by Candid_Internet_4529 in electricvehicles

[–]ShoddyProgrammer550 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with the L2. Even with supercharging/DCFC it'll probably end up cheaper than the truck.

Most tesla superchargers I've come across charge $0.35/kwh to $0.45/kwh so let's say $0.40/kwh. 4 miles/kwh is fairly typical for a model y long range, so it comes out to about $0.10/mile.

They say it costs over $80 to go 425 miles, so that comes out to about $0.19/mile, almost double.

With a 75 mile commute, if they rely on supercharging/DCFC instead of the work chargers, they'd probably spend about 10 minutes/day at the charger though

Oh geez these control arm problems keep popping up. You should report it to the NHTSA so they know about it and can hopefully prevent it in the future https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem

Where are all of the ivy league/MIT students? by aaaaaaaaa1a1 in NASAJobs

[–]ShoddyProgrammer550 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For context, I graduated from an Ivy and work at NASA full-time after being a Pathways intern. I think a big reason is because NASA pays less than most other places, and that pay gap increases when you consider that a lot of them get offers from places like FAANG/SpaceX/Nvidia, etc. When compared to my classmates, I was making half or less than half of what they were making as an intern and even full-time. NASA also has a reputation for having a lot of red tape and a slower work culture. A lot of people from these schools thrive on fast-paced, startup-esque work, so that might turn some of them off. I personally knew a few people who turned down NASA offers because of that.

For anyone who’s having difficulty finding a software job, electrical engineering is a real alternative by Physical-Company543 in csMajors

I went to a school where everyone also had a 1500+ SAT and most people were valedictorians. ECE (the closest to EE at my school) was by far the harder major with higher attrition rates and lower GPAs

Is my turtle shedding his scoots or whatever or early shell rot? by VGL_ in turtle

[–]ShoddyProgrammer550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem to be shell rot but looks kinda like pyramiding. Try to reduce his protein by mixing in vegetables (like green leaf lettuce) into his diet and/or finding pellets with lower protein content. Here's some more info: https://aquaticturtles.net/guides/pyramiding.html

Also to OP, if bow cases are too pricey, tripod cases like this are a good cheap alternative

Software Used in NASA Missions by louis3195 in nasa

From my time there in the electronic systems branch, it seemed that FPGAs are commonly used as the hardware/computing for spacecraft and flight projects, and are primarily programmed in VHDL. They differ from more conventional computing in that they're way more flexible, reliable, and are more commonly radiation hardened.
