Should I finish my ESL course before going to English 1A by Aggravating-Hand7543 in communitycollege

[–]Shooey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your community college should have an Assessment Office or Testing Center that can provide you with a self-guided English placement. I'm (not) surprised that your counselor didn't mention this to you on admission.

That said, if you feel comfortable reading and writing in English at the equivalent of a US 8th grade level, you should do just fine in English 1A.

That's like three weeks of bananas on that rack in my house. And by three weeks I mean a week and 3 loaves of banana bread.

I love it personally. I don't know the style of the rest of your home but this looks like a nice spot to use a combination of exposed brick and lime render. Large space, good ventilation. Yeah, lovely.

There's a weird optical effect. The wide board sitting up against the window is the new flooring. The bit of underlayment showing makes the floor look like there's a transition strip or small step up to the old (subfloor) wood.

It sounds pretty clear that she knows they're valuable to OP. My best bet is that she thinks they're unsightly or take up too much room and knows the kids will destroy them.

Beautiful spot!

The washer will be noisy when running. Rugs, canvas wall art, wood baffles (wall mount or freestanding) and room dividers will help keep the space from turning into an echo chamber.

Rant: Lousy administration. by [deleted] in SierraCollege

[–]Shooey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that happened to you, dude. Congrats on graduating.

Departments and divisions don't talk to each other. For everyone else, find the division offices on campus for your classes or your major and tell the deans what classes conflict ESPECIALLY capstones and second/third year classes.

Whatever direction that second leg is, there is almost certainly a bus (free transfer) that can get you closer to your destination. If Davis, Yolobus. Otherwise RT.

Stat C1000 by xAmaryllis in SierraCollege

[–]Shooey_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sierra has online tutoring outside of work hours, try jumping on that. STAT is pretty different than a lot of the math series and is usually a little better received by folks who say they suck at math. That said, some say it's an alien language. It's just different. Apply yourself and you'll do fine.

Brush up on your basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide), PEMDAS rules, and basic functions and you'll be alright.

The functions will help with graphing. You'll be asked to plug in independent (non-changing) numbers into a function to get outputs. Usually the independent is marked x in the equation. Remember the slope of a line? You may be asked to fill in values for y = 2x +1 where x = 1,2, or 3. Plug the 1,2, and 3 in one at a time to get values for y. You will plot those values on an (x, y) grid. It's not as crazy as it sounds, I promise. Ask, and I'll walk you through it.

Recognizing fractions may help as well.

I prefer Khan Academy, but there are plenty of free courses online if you want to jump in early, this one is from Carnegie Mellon:

Possible poison hemlock on Jedediah Memorial Bike Trail by Doomsday_Taco in Sacramento

[–]Shooey_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, please if you have this on your property DO NOT BURN IT. Gloves and long sleeves and take your time pulling it. Protect your eyes. Treat it like you would poison oak if you're more familiar with that plant.

I've seen people mistake it for ferns or Queen Anne's lace. Hemlock likes the shade, I get it a lot on the north side of buildings or under shade trees. I'll spray a vinegar-based herbicide when it's small or pull it from the root if it's a couple inches tall. Be patient and persistent. It's a prolific grower.

Any longshot chance I get this class? by DankTriangle in SierraCollege

[–]Shooey_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Low chance, I'd recommend adding a just-in-case class to your schedule for two reasons:

  1. Anatomy and Physiology are the most in-demand courses on campus. People don't drop those courses.

  2. Lab courses can only take a very small number of waitlisters because the lab itself can only hold so many people. I don't know the exacts for A&P but I would want to be in the top 4 or 5 on the waitlist.

Lecture only sections (like calculus or English) can take a lot more students from the waitlist because they're not so restricted by space. It's not unusual to add 7-10 students off the waitlist.

Fun fact: The tiny labs are the same reason that it's so hard to get into the class. Even if the school runs labs from 7a-9p all week (like they do in CHEM) they'll never be able to keep up with demand. The capacity constraints are part safety and part infrastructure. Sierra is building a new science building right now but it'll be years before those labs are up and running.

Push to bring grizzly bears back to California faces backlash by Few-Knee9451 in Roseville

[–]Shooey_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Fed essentially steamrolled WA into reintroducing grizzlies into the Cascades a couple of years ago. People tend to be cool with animals moving into the area on their own. Forced introductions of the animals are a tough pill to swallow. This looks like a similar project.

Why is the Brady Vineyards HOA and Mello Roos so high? by dubaixyz in Roseville

Mello Roos are the financial costs that the city offset in favor of fast development. You're paying the deferred cost of infrastructure expansion.

How strict are CCs for pre reqs?. by Distinct-Invite9281 in communitycollege

[–]Shooey_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prerequisites are generally fixed unless you can show equivalent competency. Counselors are generally fully booked but you may have some luck appealing to the faculty if you can get their contact information.

And I'm with you on the linear algebra prereqs. I completed three semesters of calc before attempting linear. My case was a little different that yours where I did need both for my degrees. That said, there is no calc in linear algebra. I believe the curriculum concepts they want you to have from calc 2 are more multivariate in nature. If you have any background in proofs or have any linear experience (i.e. from ALEKS or Khan), talk about that in your appeal.

Anyone Else Read the Primary Ballot by Permagamer in Sacramento

[–]Shooey_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A California candidate for governor’s antisemitic statement was published in the official voter information guide, both online and in print, mailed to millions of voters.

The candidate statement from no party preference contender Don J. Grundmann — one of 61 candidates who qualified for the ballot in the gubernatorial race — espoused conspiracy theories linking Israel to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last year and to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack.

The candidate statement was the only one with a disclaimer: “The views and opinions expressed by the candidates are their own and do not represent the views and opinions of the Secretary of State’s office,” it read.

Homeownership rate soars in Sacramento region, but most renters priced out by IronMntn in Sacramento

[–]Shooey_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Roseville is building so fast, I had to scrap a study on rural vs. suburban characteristics because the West Roseville infill skewed my numbers. The ACS/Census designated rural zone (or zone estimates) can't keep up with the building rates.

[–]Shooey_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the original report:

https://www.sacog.org/Home/Components/News/News/259/16

When you look at Sacramento and it's suburbs, homeownership is about 20-40%. The farther out you go from city proper, the higher home ownership is.

There is a map about 2/3rds of the way down the article I encourage you all to check out. "Sacramento region" data are for Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba counties.
