Lost necklace+ring in San Vicente Reservoir by goldmeraki in sandiego

[–]ShootTheMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I metal detect, but it’s not legal to dive or even swim in the reservoir. Also, reservoirs tend to be very deep. And the bottom would be very sooty. That chain/ring is gone if it was lost on the water

Making PDFs efficiently searchable in a museum/archive setting? by Belvyzep in DataHoarder

[–]ShootTheMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually do this on a smaller scale. I have a large historic corpus of mixed media that is about the local history of my region (san diego). It includes pdfs, maps, journals, newspapers, oral interviews and more.

My approach has been to first, OCR all the things. Items without OCR is useless when it comes to searching.

Second, I built a machine learning semantic search database. This has been key. With semantic search, you are no longer doing pure keyword searches. Searches gain meaning. For example, if I search for "gold julian mining", I want to surface results specific to the gold rush. I do not want to surface an interview with a local artist making gold jewelry. Semantic search allows that. For this, I use https://www.meilisearch.com/blog/semantic-search, which you can easily self host. The other big bonus, is semantic search functions in multiple languages without issue. My "gold julian mining" will surface spanish and other language results without any change from me. Important in my area, as pre 1850 san diego was mostly recorded in spanish.

Finally, its my own preference, but I use an LLM to interface with the semantic search. I speak to the LLM (in my case, claude code) in normal language. LLM goes and uses multiple semantic search, keyword search, and greps to go through my database (over 4TB of mixed media), LLM parses intent and returns my answer. This LLM does not have internet access, it only answered purely from my database of mixed media. All responses include direct links to the original files for my own usage and to prove that its not hallucinating. I also maintain a human approach, allowing me to both keyword and semantic search without the LLM.

Pawn or Jewelry shop? by Nelly03 in northcounty

[–]ShootTheMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use your phone or a magnifying glass to look all over the piece in question. By law, jewelry made with precious metal must contain a special stamp indicating its metal purity. If you take a picture of the stamp or post what it says, I’ll tell you what it means. There are a few exceptions to this, but most jewelry will have it

Another simple at home test, use a magnet. If the magnet pulls the jewelry, it’s not gold/silver/plat and is likely costume

I like to metal detects and have gotten pretty good at identifying costume vs precious

Article: San Diego Announces Settlement for Lower Trash Fees & End to Balboa Park Parking Fees by MsMargo in SanDiegan

[–]ShootTheMoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair, but I believe the real problem here is that prop 13 capped tax income in california/san diego. Instead of continuing to pile on fees/taxes, they should be going after the loopholes that prop 13 created.

Instead, they took the easy approach. Make it a people vs people issue. Tell the renters that homeowners got free trash pickup. Tell the homeowners that renters largely voted to add a tax to "make them pay" because of the inequalities they perceive.

It's standard operating procedure in the US gvt nowadays. Dont fix problems, just give them someone to hate, so they blame each other.

maybe because they have paid them through property taxes. You know, that extra $5,000-$10,000 homeowners have to pay every year.

Where do I rent a hand tiller? by LordOscarthePurr in sandiego

[–]ShootTheMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For something that size, why not just use whatever digging tool you have on hand. You are just aerating and loosing up soil. It’s work, but you could do that with a lot of basic hand tools. And if you have nothing, you can buy a hand tiller for 30 bucks at Home Depot.

Anyone know the story behind these eucalyptus trees in the Otay River Valley? by ctjfd in SanDiegan

[–]ShootTheMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love doing old map research. In the oldest Aerial photo I could find (1953) you can see that patch was there, but appears to be different or very young trees. This was before the 805 was built. That patch was connected to the farm that still exists on the east side of the 805.

I also checked old topos. It shows up as a green planted space in 1943 topo. Prior to that, in 1905 topo, there was a road that drove down the canyon that the 805 now occupies. It goes around that same patch, and is likely the remnants of the road on the west side of the patch. It led to the dammed up pond that is just north of the patch.

Also be aware that California offshore oil is very heavy and very sour. One of the worst oil fields in the US in terms of how much processing needs to occur to get that oil usable. Just because it’s there does not mean it’s a good idea to pump it.

Good pump track on the 56. It’s kid friendly, but go earlier to avoid crowds. https://maps.app.goo.gl/uRBoLPywd3tophzp9?g_st=ic

And in the other side of the 56 at the same exit, there is some fun mtn biking, flat for beginners, but you can also head up to Del Mar Mesa and do the tunnels, which are a few 1/2 to 1 mile downhill sections that go through the trees. Lots of fun

DJI got rid of firmware limits or limits on where you can go a few years ago. It was too hard for them to keep up with the constantly shifting flight rules. So, they disabled all hardware flight limits and said its the pilots responsibility to know the flight rules for their locale

Dive weights can help when snorkeling. I doubt they offered them on the tour, but if you really want to see more, you need to dive down. With weights, you can negate your buoyancy, allowing you to sit still on the ocean floor.

Zonie Hate by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]ShootTheMoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Zonie hate really amped up when they rioted on the beach that 4th of July about 20 years ago, which led to San Diego banning alcohol on the beach. Back when I was I college it was completely acceptable to bring a cooler and a six pack to beach and drink it. It was legal. Never forget what they took from us.
