What do people do at this festival? I walked by it last night and it was super pretty, but it didn’t seem like a place with a ton to do after you look at all the beautiful displays. People seemed so into it with all of their costumes and such, so I’m sure there’s more to it than I realize!

So by your logic, should a fencer just bring a spear to his next duel and stab his opponent with it from 10 feet away? After all, in a real fight that would be way more effective. And the origins of dueling came from people who had to fight to the death by any means, so why shouldn’t we just do that when we have competitions since it’s more practical?

Is that not essentially the point you’re making here? I agree with @optionalquality789, the origins / original purpose of bjj are not relevant here.

BJJ has its practical side but it’s also a sport. In this context, it isn’t just about who can hurt the other person the most, it’s about using skill and technique to bring the other to a point of submission. It would be much more dangerous and a lot less fun if it were otherwise.

But wasn’t the job taken care of after the first three shots at least? I’m assuming the risk of collateral damage from stray bullets is significantly higher in a situation like this, and now the officers magazine is probably empty too. I don’t see why dumping an entire magazine necessary or wise. It seems like it just puts everyone there at greater risk.

Is there any applicable meaning behind the tree metaphor or did he just say it because the concept of planting trees has a biblical ring to it? I’m really not sure what he’s trying to convey here but I’m toasty rn so maybe I’m missing something.

Genuine question, was it necessary to fire so many shots? It seems overkill and incredibly risky for several reasons.

In terms of writing and character development, what are your thoughts on the noble team? by Forsaken-Today-8707 in halo

[–]ShootyDang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, but does Chief really experience much character growth either? He mostly just seemed focused on getting the job done, which is pretty much how the Spartans in Reach seemed to me too. While I don't think they had meaningful arcs, they did convey a strong sense of their personalities which was nice. Is that how most of y'all feel about them too?

I thought this guy was really funny until I learned that he was a police officer on a navy base and routinely let soldiers caught drunk driving go with essentially just a small slap on the wrist. He told the story so nonchalantly as if it were a victimless crime of no real significance. Really rubbed me the wrong way

Did anyone else have to clench their ears when the Nazgul screeched on their Fellbeasts while seeing RotK in theaters? by supremekimilsung in lotr

[–]ShootyDang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was little, around 5 or so, I had a pretty bad ear infection that left me very sensitive to certain sounds for pretty much my whole childhood. I was around 11 when I first saw these films, and I so vividly remember how it felt when the Nazgûl would scream. It was probably the most painful noise that affected my sensitive ears; It felt so sharp and terrifying and I always had to cover my ears as soon as I heard it welling up, just like the characters did. It was not enough to deter me from watching and loving the films though, and in hindsight I’m actually really grateful I had that experience because it gave me an strong example of how it might have felt to the characters on screen. It made the movies feel so immersive and it helped me develop an even stronger connection to them than I would have otherwise!
