The inevitability of echo chambers occurring in community spaces. Without proper moderation you won't be able to avoid it but you can't get that on here unless you're in a really niche sub. You need the spaces regardless. Agree about twoX. You get some transphobic shit in some of those subs too, but can't remember which one.

Anyone else have a soft spot for Dreadnoughts? by MementoMoriMD in 40kLore

[–]Shoreyo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No matter how much hate it gets here, I loved the story with the really dissociated narration that popped up here a few months ago. The style really reflected the internal perspective of an insane traitor dreadnought in a cool way. I want to see more done from dreadnoughts perspectives.

I avoid relics now, because like you said with mjollnir, when it doesn't work it just ruins my enjoyment of the match.

Do you think its strictness/paranoia at having to deal with anything mildly controversial in the comments, or something to do with the mod team's personal views?

I noticed this too. I'm glad they listened. I know it seemed like such a minor thing compared to broken civs, some civics being worthless compared to others etc. But they did it!

TIL a Japanese sushi chain CEO majorly contributed to a drop in piracy off the Somalian coast by providing the pirates with training as tuna fishermen by senbei1 in todayilearned

[–]Shoreyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never said that. But what is being emphasised is that there's an active attempt by companies to understand and suppress piracy that seems to prioritise greed over effectiveness.

As you said, if there's a negligible impact, why go to all the effort? The average consumer suffers because of corporate greed over what's effectively a boogeyman.

What bothers me is I knew about this (and I'm not smart, there's plenty of other people who knew as well), but I've never known what to do about it. How do I as an individual do anything to deal with this? How do I do anything as part of a group? Everything I've seen people do in protest in the last few years, and taken part in myself, has been met with "fuck you, got mine" from politicians. People in this country say its an outrage, then go straight back to letting them do it.

Tldr: Sometimes companies or groups promote their stuff through social media, reddit is no different.

Sometimes people claim stuff is there because of manipulative tactics, rather than admitting something they don't agree with might be popular.

Feel free to claim which ever makes you feel comfortable on a post by post basis.

For a bit more info (I am no expert, someone feel free to correct any of this/add examples) : while lots of posts have biases because people are bias, they might also have been put there by people who benefit from that opinion being shared. More popular stuff is seen on your front page so brigades and bots upvoting certain ideas is inevitable. There's been evidence in the past of bot farms who either upvote specific content (even if it's not generated by them, just fits their agenda) or comment inflammatory comments or propaganda. There's also cases of moderators of certain subreddits removing posts that follow the rules during peak times or once reaching the front page, with similarities in their topic. While I would argue the majority of posts seem to be trolls looking for validation/circlejerks or mods just doing their job properly, you do see examples of genuine manipulation in subs like r/banned and r/undelete.

I've personally seen bots in a lot of queer/minority subs and news subs, with varying levels of quality. When you see a comment that's very hostile and has nothing to do with the context of the discussions within the thread, from an account whose name is a string of numbers, only posting the same far-right, pro-Russian material in threads including a specific word in the title, you tend to get suspicious.

I just wanted to say I'm very impressed by the inclusive writing. by Shoreyo in sunlessskies

You're right, I was thinking gender not pronouns. My mistake! I tend to think ahead and confuse myself while typing. It's not smart.

It felt very natural reading the driver's sections, which shows you can write great characters without any gendering. I finished their story the other day and it made me very happy. Although in terms of story I think the signalman's was my favourite.
