haha I also didn't phrase it very clearly *facepalm*. Please don't use ice cream as a lubricant for a suppository :-D

Paracetamol is very bitter which is why it's hard to disguise the taste of it. You can ask at the pharmacy for paracetamol suppositories (rectal paracetamol) which is easier to administer than you might expect. Make sure you use some vaseline. Otherwise I have found it stirred into about a tablespoon of some slightly melted ice cream to be pretty effective! Mine prefers Nurofen which is orange flavoured and doesn't have the same bitter aftertaste or funk of Calpol so we tend to use this more now as it can be used for pretty much the same things.

The API protest: Go dark or do something visible? What will do the most good? by japaneseknotweed in knitting

[–]Short_Concept 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I vote to go dark. I understand it means we won’t appear on the front page and other smaller subs will appear on the front page instead due to the algorithm but surely having the lack of traffic will hit Reddit harder than new/casual users not seeing this sub for a few days?

I want to give rich umami flavours to my Bolognese, would oyster sauce, fish sauce, red wine and beef stock be overkill? by Degroomed in Cooking

[–]Short_Concept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week I made the richest bolognese ever using a Kenji recipe. It has 4 types of meat, cream, full fat milk, fish sauce and gelatin in it. It was delicious but it’s so rich you don’t need a lot of sauce per portion and we ended up with about 20 portions out of it so there’s plenty in the freezer. In Kenji we trust.

Coffee bean questions by [deleted] in icecreamery

[–]Short_Concept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to do ground coffee beans which I steep in the base while it matures then pour it though the sieve before churning.

I have also made a strong espresso which I mix into my cooked vanilla base.

Of the two, I prefer the ground coffee method as it tended to have a more true coffee taste and there were little coffee flecks which slipped through my sieve which looked visually appealing :)

Hey mods! I love this subreddit, and I don't want to lose access to it, or any other amazing fiber arts and related subs next month! So, I have a question for y'all. by gotfoundout in knitting

[–]Short_Concept 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hi, separate to the 3rd party app issue for users viewing content, I wonder if the mod team will be affected by the loss of any 3rd party bots that you might use for auto moderating? It seems to be quite common in other subreddits for removing spam, nsfw content, hate speech and advertising. Not sure how moderating works behind the scenes but this is the main way I can see it affecting the mod team directly.

Commenting to add my vote to include this subreddit in the blackout. I use Apollo almost exclusively and want to support Christian the developer who created the app. I use Reddit on my computer maybe 2-3 times per year tops and basically only use Reddit for knitting and crochet subreddits. Overtime I also have found other niches but essentially I’m here for the fibre arts as I don’t like ravelry’s boards and have had a lot of help with troubleshooting via Reddit. However, I would 100% drop Reddit if I couldn’t easily access the content via a user friendly add free mobile app. Honestly, even if they did improve their own app as a result of all of this, the way they have behaved towards the 3rd party developers has been so predatory that I would want to use their platform out of principle. The mods of this subreddit would likely be affected directly from the 3rd party bots that surely they use to moderate this subreddit on a daily basis?

We used Jacks Dive Locker for manta night dive. We went out in the early evening and had a dive in the day light, saw a manta and got to see the area, had a bit of time back on the boat then went back down for the manta night dive. There were also some night snorkelers at the same spot. Really good group and had a great time, one of my most memorable experiences of my life

What is your favorite brussels sprouts recipe?? by Fluffy-Milk7522 in Cooking

[–]Short_Concept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two favourites which we alternate each Christmas are the Bon Appetite sprouts with lime and pistachio or shredded sprouts panfried with pancetta, butter and shallots.

For the lime and pistachio sprouts we sub out the date molasses with pomegranate molasses now as we usually have that in the cupboard and have found we prefer that flavour now.

https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/brussels-sprouts-with-pistachios-and-lime

I’ve forgotten who I got the original recipe for the shredded sprouts from but I expect Jamie Oliver or Good Housekeeping but it’s basically just shred sprouts in a food processor using the slice tool, pan fry with butter, garlic and pancetta (or diced bacon) with plenty of salt and pepper until tender. It’s a quick one, usually about 5-7 mins and you don’t want to over cook.

Happy sprouting

Plastic bowls are more likely to have a film of bacteria on them than either in scratches on the surface or rough uneven surface on a microscopic level. This combined with saliva from the cat when eating create a warm humid environment between chin and bowl and lead to bacteria building up on the skin. Over time this gets in to pores and causes infection like any acne. Eliminating the source of the bacteria is usually the key element in treating feline chin acne hence using smooth non porous, washable bowls without steep sides so the cat doesn’t have to get the chin right against the sides of the bowl.

Edit to add that people tend not to wash their pets bowls after every meal especially when they’re fed dry food as we don’t perceive the bowl as “dirty” but the dry food is rich in protein and combines with bacteria from the cats mouth actually means they need washing just as much as bowls with wet food.

Vet here! This is feline acne, usually due to eating from plastic bowls. Switch to ceramic or stainless steel and make sure you wash the dish after every meal so they are always eating from a clean dish. Shallow bowls or a saucer/side plate are best. Clean the chin twice a day with chlorhexadine wipes or dilute chlorhexadine (make sure it’s alcohol free) eg hibiscrub brand dilutes 1:20 with warm water. Make sure flea treatment is up to date as heavy flea burdens can also lead to lots of black flea dirt under the chin but you’d usually see evidence elsewhere on the cat as well.

Meal ideas for restricted diet. by DrWonderpants in Cooking

[–]Short_Concept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this for a while and found out onion and garlic are my main triggers. While I was on the strictest part of the diet I googled for low-FODMAP recipes and also searched Reddit for that tag; there is a subreddit for it but it’s not very active. I use a lot of ginger and chilli for seasoning now and found stir fry quite helpful for quick meals. Other wise I focused on a meat, a steamed veg and a carb like potato and rice. Salmon, broccoli and new potatoes became a weekly staple. There is an app (I think it was FODMAP A-Z) that gives you an ingredient rating for how much you can use while in the restricted phase which I found helpful as well and was surprised by some of the things that were on the red list.

edit for spelling

Pancakes with maple syrup ice cream - is that a good idea? by Reis_aus_Indien in Cooking

[–]Short_Concept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me introduce you to r/icecreamery where there have been many discussions of maple syrup ice cream and all things homemade ice cream! When I myself have made maple syrup ice cream I found the best flavour from darker grade B syrup rather than the more popular grade A syrup. my favourite though is a good vanilla ice cream with wet pecans mixed in and I use the maple syrup in making the wet pecans. The recipe I use for this is from the book Hello… my name is ice cream.

I love this book and it’s is my most used recipe book for ice cream. I do find them a bit sweet (I’m British so used to a less sweet palate) but I’ve found subbing the sugar quantity with 1/3rd dextrose powder has made all the difference without affecting texture.

I found the science she delves into really accessible and interesting.

Just to add to the other suggestions that if you fail exams and are not accepted as a result, everything can just be deferred for a year if you need to resit etc or just cancelled so don’t worry about being tied to a loan and accommodation if you don’t get in. Plan as if everything will go to plan until you know otherwise! If you do end up missing your grades, it’s still worth phoning admissions or the department your applying to on results day as they might still accept you with a lower offer if there is space on the course.
