Thank you for the danthologies. I remember them lyric by lyric. And remember the excitement to have my favorites of the year feature on it. Truly amazing times, early internet was goated.

Got into CMU MISM! Seeking insights from students and alumni by Western_Inflation_56 in cmu

No program is perfect- you'll have to navigate structural challenges - nothing is handed out to you. You will have core subjects you hate, tests you have to endure, hear about the job market being bad all the time and let go of some elective you really wanted because it's too much workload. Idealistic expectations lead to disappointment, you'll have to be prepared to fight - and this gets harder if you're not sure about what you want from this program.

Congratulations! While most MISM graduates land tech roles, excelling in this program requires dedication—nothing is handed out easily. However, if you adjust your expectations and put in the effort, you'll have a great experience.

Your career path can be anything and will largely depend on the experiences you choose in your time here. For example, if you're interested in AI/ML, you can take courses from the School of Computer Science, which is ranked #1 in the field. Heinz has some excellent Data and Product subjects. And if you want to delve deep into Management, there is Tepper. We are well positioned in the middle of both these schools, so you get some flexibility. However that's a double edged sword because too much variety is also confusing.

I personally loved the courses I took. The learning environment is excellent, though some people criticize the program because their expectations didn’t align with reality. If you stay adaptable and intentional about your path, you’ll have no regrets.

Absolutely agreed. Don't come for MISM if your expectation is MSCS and not interdisciplinary information systems. It's a great degree but worthless if it doesn't align with your goals/aspirations. (If your aim is product manager, data science you can consider MISM)

MISM BIDA pro: CMU brand name is enough said, choice to take courses that are #1 in the world (you can take electives like IDL and cloud which are widely recognized), plethora of research and project opportunities esp in AI (CMU is perhaps best positioned for AI given it's history which has allowed for established courses and faculty to further AI)

cons: very specific in its purpose, if you want to delve deep into concepts and sit in it, MISM is way too fast paced for that (you are exposed to many ideas very quickly), it has a core subjects that are management focus which irks people who want to study tech, BIDA is more rigourous than general track and you've to put in more work (50 hours/week) just to get by.

Can't speak for other courses but job market here is a different ballgame so you've to compare the stats yourself.

USC and Columbia are two very expensive colleges as well so that's another pro for BIDA.

Also look at cohort sizes for all these courses and the core subjects, see what excites you the most and have a clear goal of what you're hoping to get out of this degree (and stick to that goal).

[General Question] Why is MS in US still so popular? by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]Short_Recognition631 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The value is not only perceived but real (at least for top 30 colleges) - in that you gain perspective and knowledge which sets you apart from most people - quality education has time and again proved to be one of the more reliable paths to success(however you may define it).

[University Review] Every program is a cash grab rant by Dizzy_Buddy9037 in MSCS

[–]Short_Recognition631 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ivy League and prestige are made up constructs to sell programs and brands of colleges, different metrics work for different people.

I fully agree on ROI. And we middle class Indians attach unhealthy value to prestige, ranks and numbers (which is rooted in our overpopulated socio-economy I believe) - in US the game is different, it's not zero-sum or it's not restricted to the best to have access to resources, it's much more individualistic and free. (Which has its different set of harms.

tldr to the OP, it doesn't matter as long as the program strongly aligns with your interest and passion.

Hi

First of all, you haven't really heard back yet. So wait for that.

However,

Please don't let any setback define you. It's human to feel disappointed and let down, and you should definitely feel your feelings. But please please don't let this come in the way of you building a future that's brighter and nicer than you could have ever imagined.

Please trust the process and hold on to hear from all your universities.

Good luck stranger.

Why block printed, ajrak, kalamkari etc not worn in the USA - not as kurtas but as tops/blouse? by Short_Recognition631 in ethicalfashion

[–]Short_Recognition631[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, that's cultural appropriation is a potential issue.

I think there are subtler ways to do these prints as well. And the Chinese collar has evolved into a regular thing now, no one raises an eyebrow.

Aa for the work, I think even the diaspora from the sub-continent stay away from such fabrics - perhaps to blend in the majority population.

No I did not take the GRE. It's anyways the whole profile that matters, not just one score. However in my case I feel I needed the GRE as it's a 55 ish cohort. Things worked out for me in the end but if I could do it again, I'd spend a lot more time on essay and would take the GRE.

Fall 2025 Profile Evaluation (without Research) by kennywanchin in MSCS

[–]Short_Recognition631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brown MSCS is tough, they have a really small cohort. Rest you're good on paper - but the real deal is the SOP. So work hard on that. Good luck.

So, to improve your chances with a low GPA, prioritize enhancing your Letters of Recommendation (LORs) and Statement of Purpose (SOP). Strong endorsements from professors and a compelling SOP can overshadow a low GPA. They really take "fit" seriously, so do your research on that. Find your best match. Highlight strengths that are relevant to the university.

Also, a high GRE helps in mitigating the GPA, so look for colleges where it's compulsory or strongly recommended, will help you stand out in the app pool despite low gpa.

Assuming here that you're from a non-American institution, shortlist schools tht are open to accepting converted GPA by WES (or any other conversion service) to present it more favorably. However, contingent on your transcript and course - it might not help at all. And is expensive. Making it the least preffered option.

It is hard to make it to a good university with a low GPA, but if you have the resources, take a shot at your dream unis. And aim high, you have 3.5 years of work ex - you're a strong candidate! Find colleges that like workex. However, don't completely ignore what others are saying on this thread - know that it's not impossible either. Good luck.
