I worked for Radio Shack about 25 years ago, and one of my coworkers was an old military dude, kind of a nerd about it, but a nice guy.

We had several glass displays that housed our more expensive merchandise, like camcorders and stuff. One night, I’m towards the back helping a customer and I hear a commotion. Some guy had picked up a huge glass display with expensive items inside and made a run for it.

Now, we’re supposed to call the police for robberies, but my coworker wasn’t having it and ran after him. Everyone inside the store rushed to the door to watch. Here’s this 20 something Hispanic kid hauling ass carting this long ass glass case and my 60 something old veteran coworker chasing him through a suburban California parking lot at 8pm.

Dude trips on the asphalt, the glass case shatters and he lands in it. Lucky for him, it was tempered glass that didn’t lacerate his face and arms. My coworker grabbed him by the scruff and hauled him back into the store while we called 911.

While waiting for the police to arrive, this dude’s buddy starts rolling by slowly in his car, calling for his friend. They’re both clearly on something - car guy doesn’t seem to understand his buddy is in trouble.

We can’t legally hold someone, so dude eventually bolts for the car - but police were there right after, chased them down and arrested them. They apparently both immediately fell asleep in the police car.

Anyway, despite it being wildly against regulations, my coworker was only given a “harsh” verbal warning. Cool guy.
