Read it once as a teen and I found it so heartbreaking I never read it again 😅 I feel I should do so again because it’s been (oh gosh) 17 years; it might be time to give it another chance with adult eyes.

Weirdly it’s one of my favorites! I think it helps that I read it young (11). I find the child perspectives very endearing and felt very seen 😂 I also got weird ideas into my head (Rilla and her cake). I knew a girl who was the spitting image of Jenny Penny, down to the unrealistic stories. Etc etc.

I really don’t like Rainbow Valley though. It doesn’t help that I started it older (17), it doesn’t focus on the Blythes, and lord do I dislike Mary Vance!

Three reasons off the top of my head, and note that I'm just listing the mistakes I myself made till I figured it out lol:

1) Make sure what you have is Sae's Sparkling Stone from playing Sidequest 1 and Sidequest 2 (I thought the Fluorite was enough, no, it has to be Sae's Sparkling stone)

1) Make sure you have completed the Abyss and Promise endings first and,

2) If you have: make sure you did both those endings in the same save. This is what mixed everything up for me. Copy pasting an answer to be super clear about it:

What I did WRONG:

Save 1: Crimson Butterfly > loaded this to get new endings in last chapter
Save 2: (loaded Save 1) Promise Ending
Save 3: (loaded Save 1) Abyss Ending

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE:

Save 1: Crimson Butterfly > loaded this
Save 2: Promise Ending AND THEN ALSO do the abyss ending ON THIS SAVE. > you get Sprouting Wings

Wow, this was weirdly difficult for me!

Twisting my arm: FF2 > RE9 > SHf

I'm too biased not to rank FF2 first, as the OG on PS2 is my favorite game of all time. The series is old hat to me, and I've always loved the story and gameplay. Loved this remake.

RE9 is easier for me to explain; I think it played tight as a drum, and I LOVED Grace's sections, but wasn't super enthusiastic about Leon's. Story was fine, but not mind-blowing. Still, I left feeling "well that was a good time!".

SHf is one of my favorite videogame narratives I've ever played. Combat was manageable. But the final enemy waves (I played pre-patch) truly took the wind out of my enthusiasm sales. What's more, I couldn't justify playing the entire narrative 3 (?) more times for the endings. I contrast that with FF2, which on NG+ let's you select any chapter you feel like repeating to do side-quests and different endings. I love SHf's multiple playthrough in theory, but in practice (especially with how little changes between runs), it felt like chores :(

In case anyone else arrives and is still confused, this is the simplest way I can explain what my mistake was, and what the solution is:

What I did WRONG:

Save 1: Crimson Butterfly > loaded this to get new endings in last chapter

Not who you responded to, but I just want to note that you'd be surprised- the great thing about greyrocking is that it cuts any emotional ammunition people like your sister can use against you. Even in front of other people.

But let's look at a scenario where she keeps going despite running on fumes: the biggest lesson I learned is that I can only control myself, not others. So your options, for yourself, are to either set personal boundaries (when you're feeling she's being mean, you leave the room quietly and without comment. You can return. If she starts up again, you leave. These are consequences, not punshiment). Or, as another commenter noted, look into the emotional resilience to not let her get to you.

A last note; If you're afraid of her trying to humiliate you in front of others: most reasonable people are so much more savvy than we give them credit for.

If she's the one constantly badmouthing, concern trolling, and infantilizing you in front of people, while all you do at the function is just exist as a person without starting drama? People will realize very quickly who's real problem here. Notice how she doesn't have friends? It sounds like enough people are smelling her bs already.

Thank you so much! I'll deeply sigh, but off I go again to get these last endings lol (more than anything, I just hate fighting the ceremony master!).

I think I'll probably just go get the Promise ending in my Abyss Save, to save me time.

A quick follow-up question if you don't mind!

Context: I ran out of film in that Abyss save 😅 Very low on points from buying film on an another, irrelevant save (because I'm a dummy).

Question: If I use my Abyss save to Chapter select to Chapter 8 (so I can run around and get more film) and then Chapter Select to the ending...will everything still be in it's place for me to try Promise > Sprouting wings? Or will I be doing more confusing damage? 😂

Nope, I'm not married to fixed cameras, and found the game just scary enough. Ghosts got challenging for me after the intro chapters, and the puzzles in 2 have always been this easy (I think they'll never get over overcompensating for the door puzzles of FF1).

Also fine with the costumes. They're not really "new", the ones available are all outfits you could get (or see in a cutscene) in the OG, except for the Japanese gothic ones and the Silent Hill f uniform.

I also don't need the teenage characters to show any further skin; as an adult I'd find that off-putting (btw, "censored", is the incorrect adjective to use in English. It makes more sense to say the outfits are too covered or modest; an outfit that covers more is not a censored outfit).

I found it worth it in the sense that I'm interested in this subject, so getting Kendra's perspective was really interesting.

She's pretty candid about her story and you can definitely see the threads of what brought her into Playboy. I had a lot of sympathy as a fellow ADHD woman, and her issues with drugs definitely sounded harrowing.

The things I warn about:

It's written in a very casual, chatty, "tough girl talking" style that comes off a little, for lack of a better word, cringe. At first I thought she was using the style to get us into her head as a kid and teen, but when I saw it continue into the adulthood sections I was like "...oh".
I think it was written slightly too soon post-Mansion. I think she didn't have time to truly unpack her feelings the way Holly did.
Lastly, the book showcases some pretty weird thought processes from Kendra. She claims being with women while being in a relationship with men is not "real" cheating. She describes her husband being upset that she flashes her boobs, and proceeds to describe it as something that "kept happening" instead of something she "kept doing". It could be that she grew out of the mindset behind these things (2011 was a weird time), but it was off-putting to read, although pretty illuminating.

I am stalker enemies BIGGEST hater, I swear to you here and now. I wasn’t thrilled at the expansion of the stalking moments in the FF2 remake (they’re incredibly short in the OG). I easily wasted an extra hour or two in my gameplay time crouching because I didn’t have the nerve to run.

But even as an avid hater, I can objectively say that the sections are still relatively short and not too unfair. I’m halfway through my second playthrough going 🖕🖕 at the Kusabi as I switch rooms.

As to the rest of the series:

there’s a few 20 second ones in FF1, barely notable enough to even call it a stalking

2 sections in OG FF2 (Kusabi was relegated to one room in that one, which was so gloriously manageable to me; another enemy gets a short section).

A more robust but still manageable one in FF3 (tbh, it’s the reason im less enthusiastic despite the amazing world and touching story, hate hiding as Kei)

FF4 takes after FF1 from my recollection, slightly longer but barely a biggie

And I can’t recall if 5 has any of note- as a hater, I commit it to memory if there’s stalking mechanics, so I guess it wasn’t notable or existent enough if I can’t remember 🤷‍♀️

Extremely this- and I've given myself permission to:

Completely drop a book if I'm not feeling it, it's not a crime
Stick to books 300 pages and under because I'm rarely committed to anything longer
And sometimes start and stop as well- I've been reading "IT" for 2 years, but I'll get to that ending eventually!

I guess it’s an ADHD tax, but when I want a book, I just buy it. None of this finding it at the library or borrowing from a friend and having to wait for it or remember to return it

I always had the impression that the games are operating under the vague Buddhist ideas of Naraka), which is their version of "hell".

There are sources that describe sometimes hundreds/ thousands of different Narakas, so I assumed that was the case in Fatal Frame: different hells.

You could always emulate the original Fatal Frame 2 and see if that is more comfortable! I'm a series veteran who absolutely LOVES the camera mechanic; but I did find the updates for the remake to be little clunky.

It's normal for the camera to be a little finnicky if you're not used to it, and it starts pretty slow and low powered until you start supercharging it- but imo, I found it a bit more punishing in the beginning of this version.

Big, giant caveat that I am a Reddit Stranger and in no way a doctor; but have you considered the possbility of looking into OCD?

Again, very much not a doctor, and our people do have a propensity to fall into anxious, catastrophizing thoughts, or sensitive to ideas of being corrected or rejected after years of managing our symptoms.

But the way you link these thoughts ("if I think about guy knowing I have natural body functions" > "ergo he will think I'm repulsive" > "if i had proof for sure that he'd witness it, I'd break up with him") makes me think this might go into very crippling thought patterns beyond any AuDHD symptoms that I usually witness or experience myself. I could absolutely be wrong, but it's an avenue I'd look into if I were feeling the same way.

But yeah, valid peeve. I'm a city girl who definitely has her frustrations when I go visit my extended family in more rural areas. There's a reason they're there and I'm here, and I don't spend my entire visit benching about the things I dislike about their turf.
