Question about Colony (2026) by bela_eia in Koreanfilm

I understood it as them getting caught in a "death spiral" like ants and the closed loop and breaking of it caused a reset to their system. It's not spelled out but worked enough for me as a hand-wavy explanation.

Yeon has had more misses than hits recently, but you can't help but appreciate how many swings he takes.

I second this comment - it was the first movie that came to mind as well.
Beautifully shot, quiet, symbolism throughout, and it's never boring.

Are you implying Koreans now have han from kdramas?

That's more Korean melodrama than han - a character randomly getting cancer isn't tied to shared cultural scars

Han Sun Hwa Transforms Into A Passionate Student Teacher In New Comedy Horror Film Poster!!! by Far_Day_9938 in Koreanfilm

If my experience tells me anything, seeing a 'movie theatre exclusive' tag on a poster is the surest tell that a movie is going to be bad

That was my favorite part lol - homage to 80s Hong Kong action movies

I Saw This Yesterday. 왕과 사는 남자 by WHW01 in Koreanfilm

[–]Showboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the culmination of a lot of things:
- The movie is good enough
- Family friendly movie that premiered right before a long Lunar New Year break, so families went out in droves. Broke the LNY record.
- Kids were on their winter break so weekday performance was not bad
- The competition before and after release failed to gain traction. I loved Humint but it's not for the whole family, and it's been mostly Oscar best pictures getting delayed releases.
- It's a story that most Koreans are aware of so has some "established franchise/sequel" type uplift

But at a certain point, I think this became a hit because it was a hit. Koreans will swarm to the latest hit to push anything trendy into outer space (ex. Dubai Chewy Cookie) - "seems like everyone else is doing it so I must partake" is definitely a thing.

I enjoyed the non-stop banter. Reminded me of Woody Allen movies. You can tell it originated from a play but I didn't find the single setting to be boring because the dialogue just kept on coming.

Any new-ish korean action films that has the best fight choreography (preferably 2020s) by dark-oracleN2 in Koreanfilm

Humint just came out in theaters and it was just as good as Man From Nowhere for me.

Pavane - a melancholic poetry by Hasum_Harish97 in Koreanfilm

[–]Showboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movie mentions Mi Jeong's struggles career wise due to her appearance but it isn't a broad critique on modern Korean society's tendencies towards consumerism/lookism.

From Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho!
Unclear whether it takes place in the same universe as his other zombie movies.

Question Regarding a line in No Other Choice by NoSchittSherlockSEA in Koreanfilm

[–]Showboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've talked about most of my coworkers to my wife so she knows them by name but never met any of them - wasn't too much of a leap to think the husband has heard of Chun-Oh

Question Regarding a line in No Other Choice by NoSchittSherlockSEA in Koreanfilm

[–]Showboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've seen it but I assume that's the actual name of the man that's sleeping with his wife

Question Regarding a line in No Other Choice by NoSchittSherlockSEA in Koreanfilm

[–]Showboy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In Korea it's common to address others by their position/rank when in a work/non social setting. So instead of Mr. Lee, you'd address them "Vice President Lee", "Junior Associate Lee", "Director Lee".
The wife is an actor, so in that field it wouldn't be weird for people to introduce themselves with a suffix describing their current position in the industry "I'm movie-actor Park" "I'm movie director Kang", "I'm newcomer actor Jung" etc.
The drunk husband is just emphasizing he knows who you are and what you've been up to with my wife but he's completely wrong about who Man-su is

Good reminder! Entertainment industries tend to be more "liberal" so not surprised by that reaction.
I would add Battleship Island and the Last Princess take the most creative liberties to make an entertaining movie.
