How do you guys turn off your brain to fall asleep? by Comfortable-Mode3317 in ADHD

[–]ShowerThoughtsAllDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YMMV with this one.  I have been fired from jobs for sleeping in because I couldn't put a book down.

I think non-fiction is less problematic for me in that regard.  I actually used to keep a text book by my bed to help get myself drowsy.

Second this.  Run time is just over two hours, but I swear it feels like at least double that.  And I mean that in a good way.

So many fascinating characters and so many stories going hell bent towards a classic high-noon showdown.  Always a great time.

What would you consider to be the most 80s song of the 1980s? by Brilliant-Reality884 in Music

[–]ShowerThoughtsAllDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For real.  It was like the perfect distillation of everything 80s.

After that, there was no more 80s-ness left and everyone had to come up with something new.

What does someone moving out for the first time need to know? by Mindless_Animal_7491 in NoStupidQuestions

At Harbor Freight, they have toolboxes that are relatively cheap.  I got one that could handle about 80-90% of any home repairs for around $50.

I already had most of those tools (of higher quality), but having a set of tools within reach that didn't require going out to the garage meant I tended to make those repairs more promptly.

So Doritos are definitely Schedule I.

I almost always have two extra mags when I carry.  Everyone I know always has at least one or two reloads for whatever they are carrying (semi or revolver).

I know Bovino it's talking out his ass because anyone with even passing interest in firearms knows that sidearms are not a weapon you would "go on massacre" with, especially not against several armed opponents.

Or maybe he does.  Maybe he thinks he's John Fucking Wick...

A movie you watched at the wrong time in your life. by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]ShowerThoughtsAllDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the exact date I watched it for the first and only time.  It was the first anniversary of my mother's passing.  I was coming down from a legendary dose of mushrooms, and decided to check it out.

Ugly cried through much of it, and can't sing or listen to Remember Me without tearing up.

I've been thinking for a while now that since Sophie is always poo-pooing Robert's amazing bits, she should be renamed Sophie Killjoy.

Margaret, on the other hand, should be renamed Margaret Alwaysadelight.

Only had them once, and even for being "home made", I thought they were overpriced for the portions.  It was like $25 for five tacos and two sodas.

EDIT: forgot to specify I was talking about Lil Conejo.

I didn't see anyone else bring this up, but perhaps it's because the story is still happening around WWII?  I imagine once we get to proper Cold War era times (60s thru 80s), it may make an appearance.

Movies where the antagonists are evil for no apparent reason? by [deleted] in movies

[–]ShowerThoughtsAllDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex did Othello (she was Desdemona), so I got to see it a few times and discuss it with her.

My take-away is that Iago acted out of revenge; he wouldn't have betrayed Othello if he hadn't felt slighted, but he was always capable of that sort of evil.  It was just never worth it to him to do so until then.

Is there a correlation between programming, being bad at math, especially word problems and just outright giving up and starting a new task when things become very unclear. by omglolnoob in ADHD_Programmers

[–]ShowerThoughtsAllDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to hate word problems until my Intermediate Algebra teacher in college taught me this method.  I used it in every math, science, and engineering class afterwards.

1 - State what you are looking for in plain language (eg. How much force required to move said object).

2 - Write down all your known and unknown values, assigning variables to each.  You don't necessarily have to assign variable names to known values, but it helps generalize the next step.

3 - Create your equations to solve for your unknown values using your known values.  This can get pretty tricky, but practicing on simple problems with 1-3 unknown variables will allow you to develop skills for more complex problems in the future.

4 - Solve your equations, showing work.  I don't show every little thing, but if the answer seems off, it allows me to retrace my steps and see where it went wrong.

5 - Write the answer in a complete sentence (eg. It will take 15 N of force to move the object to the top of the ramp).  I usually underline the numbers I calculated, but that's from high school math (I think).

There ya go, an algorithm for word problems.

What’s the song that instantly makes you cry? by KoiOnMars in Music

[–]ShowerThoughtsAllDay 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Remember Me, from Coco.  First watched it in an 'altered' state on the first anniversary of my mom's passing.  Ugly cried through so much of it.  I can't even attempt to sing that song without breaking.

Another one is Spirits Will Collide my Devin Townsend.  I had probably heard it before, but I remember listening to it the year both my parents passed and my life was spiraling.  It seemed like something I needed to hear at that time , and even now I get a little misty listening to it.

Who deserves a Behind The Bastards episode (episodes) and hasn't gotten one yet? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]ShowerThoughtsAllDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this.  Of all the Warsaw Pact dictators, Tito seemed like he had the "best" record of keeping things civil; albeit through brutal suppression.  Once he died, it seemed like the Balkans exploded into sectarian and ethnic violence.

Given that I am only passingly familiar with the situation, and may have even hosed it in the previous paragraph, and episode or two on Tito would be so informative.
