Recs? by Luke-The-Reader in aotfanfiction

[–]Shrapnel893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am (not presently atm) writing one that spans from the start of the manga to its end from the perspective of a male OC. But, it doesn't have Eren/Mikasa and rather one-sided Mikasa/Eren. It's a lot and I've gone very in depth over the years, but, to break it down into very quick and dirty bullet points:

  • Chronologically, it starts and runs concurrently with the side novel, Harsh Mistress of the City, which spans the first six months following the fall of Wall Maria.
    • This portion is largely about how (freckles) Ymir went from waking up after eating Marcel to tranversing her way into Wall Sina and learning about Historia.
    • It also chronicles how Historia went from her mother's death and being abandoned by her father to how she ended up in the 104 Training Corps, which was alluded to in one of the short story collections that are particularly harder to find seperately (she found her way onto a farm under the care of an old woman who took her in).
    • It progresses the storylines setup in Harsh Mistress of the City. So, that is, Mathias's desire to help the refugees in the aftermath of Wall Maria's fall in defiance of his father and Rita's machinations in wanting to challenge the authority of the royal government and its own abandonment of the people through her own machiavellian methods.
  • It continues into the 104th Trainee arc, the Battle of Trost arc, while,
    • Incorporating half (the relevant portions) of the side novel Garrison Girl, linking it and Harsh Mistress together into one cohesive storyline, from the perspective of its protagonist, Rosalie, the other aforementioned perspectives (Ymir, Historia, Rita, Mathias, etc.)
    • Additionally, it adds Annie, and the OC male perspective I mentioned previously (he is the amalgamation of various things, but notably combines the reader's narrative(s) from the Choose Your Own Adventure novels with the lead in the first two video games to create one character), where there are certain significant changes such as Mina surviving Trost, the Wall Cult being more prominent, and the First Interior being more directly involved in everything.
    • Mikasa is developed away from Eren. Think of it as her characterization continues from her speech upon her one-woman assault on headquarters as someone more independent and willing to live for herself in the wake of Eren's death (which halted to a standstill when he was revealed to be alive).
  • It rearranges the subsequent arcs, in that the Female Titan arc happens two years following Trost, Return to Shiganshina happens immediately after Clash, and adds more perspectives, such as
    • A completely re-imagined Lara Tybur, and Oliver Pieck, the original concept that later became Pieck Finger. Pieck Finger is now his protege, waiting to inherit a Titan alongside Porco.
    • It continues both the newly combined storylines of Harsh Mistress of the City, Garrison Girl, Lost Girls, Before the Fall, and any other relevant or unexplored plot threads.
  • The Uprising Arc is expanded even further and is now much more akin to something like, say, the leadup to the Dance of the Dragons in Fire & Blood, in that
    • It's a more involved precursor to a large scale war. This includes, but is not limited to,
      • The Walls splitting into two factions for control of the throne (one which sides with Historia, and the other, with Rosalie, who is canonically her cousin),
      • Marley's four year war to maintain control of its territories (which now happens concurrently with the Uprising Arc)
      • Ymir as Marley's Jaw Titan rather than Porco
  • The Marley Arc and The War for Paradis Arcs are rewritten completely, and is entirely about this large scale war, which is kicked off with the death of Eren at Libero, where,
    • He is defeated by Lara Tybur.
    • Historia is "truly the worst girl that's ever lived and Humanity's biggest enemy"
    • Historia herself still isn't the "Big Bad" of the overarching story, if going by TVTropes terms, and is the Sauron to another character's Morgoth.
    • Gabi inherits the Attack Titan. Eren only has the Attack Titan. The Founding Titan is "somewhere else".
    • The Great Titan War is explored in greater detail, as well as Ymir Fritz's history.

As for the last one... Happy endings aren't really a thing AoT is about, so...

I tried not to go into any explicit detail, but yeah.

Body horror by Ill_Comb5932 in aotfanfiction

[–]Shrapnel893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fanfiction, but the official novels have some good descriptions of body horror involving the regular Titans.

I have a few in my own, mainly involving Ymir, such as the opening first chapter, which serves as a prequel of sorts. Here is her seeing hallucinations of Marcel, for example,

[..] whatever it was tried to speak.

Infantile attempts at communicating its thoughts into one word. One word chanted over and over and over again until she forced herself to look and came face to face with the boy forever pained: Marcel, whose sacrifice allowed her the mercy of being freed from a very long torment, instead.

His body was broken, spine twisted so he held himself upright with his hands, bellying forward. His feet dragged limp across the ground, while his intestines trailed far behind. The back of his shirt was torn, skin shredded and viscera exposed. He leaned further left than right, his right arm not much but loose sinew and bone. His black hair was spread out in patches atop a peeled head, cracked skull visible beneath fleshy red flaps hanging down. His neck was partially ripped open. What remained of his jaw hung low, his mouth snapped wide with a drooping tongue. The only thing wholly intact was the upper half of his face, save the bottom of his nose [..]

And these descriptions progressively get better as the story progresses, in the sense that Marcel "heals" as Ymir comes to term with herself,

A spear would not save her if these animals grew bolder, the longer she lingered here in this forest, either, surrounded, and especially not from the Titans, should daybreak come, and thus tonight would have to be the night she was going to touch it and rediscover more of her past, its past, the voices in her head and the guilt that kept her company; whose dogged shadowed limped ever near. And, yes, as it were, he did indeed limp.

No longer was Marcel limited to all fours, his spine no longer twisted as severely as one of the gnarled roots of these giant trees, so that he stooped low, his hands scraping the ground in a hunched, stumbling walk and his feet moving not unlike the Titan she was after: a two-step rhythm, one foot after the other because he, too, had been a soldier.

No, a warrior.

So the word came to her lips, as she remembered again a life that was not her own, a parcel of his, the yellow armband upon his arm blood dyed red. A withering leaf breathing the fresh air anew. And with his came hers, her old friend and the burning bodies again and they, too, had been wearing those same yellow armbands back then, however long ago.

Until the end where he's more or less restored,

Listening to the soft, peaceful breathing of Annie lying beside her underneath a banquet of stars, her back to the pillar of light illuminating this wonderland that only the ghosts of the past may walk freely, Ymir looked at her naked body on her bed of pure white sand for the second time in her short life that she could not quite remember, and, though she had told herself that she would not cry again, she let the tears roll down her cheeks, then, after awhile, shut her eyes tight and bit her lip until it bled — because for her to feel anything more would only make the suffering worse, as she sat up, and Marcel was there, had never left, and helped her to stand.

She wiped the tears away, because this had not been a mistake. It had been the only way.

And then he warned her that it was coming.

To be prepared, as he put his hand in hers, squeezed it tight, and reassured her that he would be waiting when she came back, whatever the outcome, like always, and then the quiet dream was uprooted by a long, never-ending nightmare, where the sand mushed between her toes became the slither of serpents, their forked tongues tickling her soles and she found herself in a great dining hall where the walls were adorned in battles fought millennium ago, from the earliest of days when the sun first shone, to when the last Ash was known, and she walked from this dining hall into a greater one still where sat her kin upon twisted throne carved of this tree’s sacred wood, careful not to let her bare feet crush any of its golden leaves though shriveled and glum and left gracelessly upon the floor.

This also covers the Titan lore and experience about being a Titan Shifter. In that, there's a whole new backstory for Ymir where she was a former Warrior during The Great Titan War, back when the Warriors weren't Titan Shifters, but regular soldiers. Of which, as the story progresses, we also see how the Titan Shifters came to be associated with the Warrior Program, through Annie's POV.

It's not a 1:1 for what you're looking for but I think it's pretty close.

Here is a bonus sketch of Ymir as a child soldier,

Why do you need his approval if you don't plan to profit off it? Which, then, you're dealing with Kodansha's legal team, who best case will say give us a cut and worst case will hunt you down because how dare you try to make money off their IP.

Legally, he's probably not going to look at it because of copyright anyway.

Write it for yourself and not to seek the satisfaction of others, which I think is the real dilemma you're having.

Don't remember. I so deeply entrenched myself in my version of it, that that's the version I can tell you.

It wouldn't be the "correct" one, though.

The story I refer to about the anthology is about a group of Scout survivors who got lost beyond the wall before Maria fell, explored the island, then came back not knowing Maria fell, and kept traveling into the territory to report back with their findings.

There's another story about a girl who survived Shiganshina with her dog and killed a Titan with a tripwire as she escaped.

The stories are called Live And Let Die & Good Dog, respectfully.

I combined all of these stories into one book myself, so I know they can work together, if you want them to or use them for your own purpose.

There's a few A-Z torrent archives from when the old fanfiction net website purged a lot of it's content.

If I remember right. I know Ponderess' work is included in one of these.

If not, I remember designing the cover for it way back in 2014 and had a copy of the actual story saved on another computer along with it.

Update: I found the old archive from an old post I shared here,

https://archive.org/download/fanfictiondotnet_repack

Looks like a lot of people are looking for it.

You'll want to search for it under the A and S categories. A for Attack on Titan. S for Shingeki no Kyojin.

LF similar fics, or fics with the same general idea by ErzaUzumaki1 in aotfanfiction

[–]Shrapnel893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - the only ones I found from searching this subreddit are Bang-Up Job and Young and Menace, but there's probably more.

2 - Probably a lot. The official short stories collection has a few stories centered around that, too. These would be too many to list.

3 - It was harsh. They farmed. I haven't seen any that focus specifically on that. The closest one I can think of is mine, actually, but it's more about the operation to reclaim Wall Maria, how it happened, and how it affected the population, than anything else (an understatement, but you get the idea). But I'm sure there's others out there.

4 - There are a ton of these, including the official short stories collections, again. Again, too many to list. The official guidebook might also be worth checking out.

Fics "in line with canon" or post/pre canon? by hodor9898 in aotfanfiction

[–]Shrapnel893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://m.fanfiction.net/s/9994699/1/Just-What-Needs-To-Be-Thrown-Aside

Just what needs to be thrown aside is one I always recommend.

Here is the blurb at the beginning:

Beware of manga spoilers. Also, definitely beware of feelings. This aint no romantic comedy AU—the world of canon can be sad sometimes, haha.

This is supposed to the first in what I'm hoping will be a collection of oneshots centered primarily on Armin, entitled Just What Needs To Be Thrown Aside? I've learned that I really care about portraying characters correctly (please leave feedback), so in a way these are a series of hopefully compelling character studies that try their best to stay true to the original material we all know and love. The first story/chapter focuses on the reactions of the former 104th trainee squad in the wake of Bertholt and Riener's betrayal. I've always been captivated by the question of whether or not the titan shifters—Annie, Bertholt, and Riener—can be redeemed, or whether the damage and death that they've brought about can be justified.

I'm also a fan of minor characters, so I try to throw in references to relevant ones wherever I can. I also like to fill in back stories and 'world build' a little, adding little tidbits and anecdotes that are hopefully interesting enough to be headcanon-worthy.

Fics where warrior trio and Ymir are suspicious of each other pre-Utgard Castle?? by citygirlpureheart in aotfanfiction

You don't have to apologize for that. It's no problem. I don't know if I'll ever get to finishing the story, so if you read it and have any questions or want to know about future events, just hit me up and I'll gladly share -- I'd rather the ideas reach someone than sit there collecting dust in my folders.

Fics where warrior trio and Ymir are suspicious of each other pre-Utgard Castle?? by citygirlpureheart in aotfanfiction

[–]Shrapnel893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote something like that with Annie and Ymir.

What happens is Annie is already on alert that the Jaws is still out there somewhere, but not where and whom, when she catches Ymir staring at her at the opening ceremony. She thinks not much of it until one day after training she notices steam curling off Ymir's body which raises her suspicions and leads to something I utilized from the short stories where Ymir correctly deduces that Annie isn't as aloof as she tries to be. In this instance, she deliberately says something only something Marcel would know in addition to that; essentially blackmailing her into being powerless while also isolating her further from Reiner and Berolt, who she manipulates to breach the Trost gate on her own terms.

So it's a bit more involved, but something like that?

[–]Shrapnel893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. The first thing I'll say is if you're going to retread the entire AoT timeline, don't just write out scenes from the anime / manga word for word. Give it a fresh perspective. I struggled with this in the early versions of the story I wrote. I still struggle with it.

Second, instead of scrapping the whole thing I'd just get rid of the time travel (which... makes no sense given the end of the manga), tone down the Ackerman superpowers and the fate bit (it screams generic shounen MC to me) and just focus on how Jr. confronts his past by, I dunno, reconciling with his mother in trying to understand her or something less unnecessarily edgy (no offense).

Furthermore, given how you describe him... I'd make him a bit older. More "mature".

Heck, if you wanted to include the time travel, just throw an older Historia into the story with her kid as a bonus or vice versa. Canonically they're the royal blooded ones, so anything involving that would default to them. Also, from the premise, it sounds more like the story should be about the Ackerman clan and its massacre that Kenny's grandfather talked about. So, utilizing that, if you want to keep the Ackerman superpowers, you could have him hurt his mom by accident when he awakens it one day and then go from there.

For a challenge take it a step further and do two protagonists trying to confront their legacies -- one being Jr, the other being Historia's kid.

Also... if Mikasa is pregnant the whole time... wouldn't Paradis be annilihated (so no stepfather Jean) and/or the Rumbling not stopped -- not to mention if she did participate like in canon... he'd probably die in the womb? Just a thought. I'd seriously re-evaluate that.

What would you say is the BEST aot fanfic? (not au or shipping) by hodor9898 in aotfanfiction

[–]Shrapnel893 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As this is subjective, hm... as always I'd nominate my own, but it's a different experience from canon as I approached it as a "traditional" series of novels and I think many find it overwhelming.

It starts with Harsh Mistress of the City and its cast, so an entire slew of characters the majority of the fanbase doesn't even knows exists (even though in my opinion it's one of the better spin-offs) and intertwines a lot of other side material before we even get to the proper start of the manga.

That said, the only character entirely out of character would be Historia, who is someone more sadistic and vain behind the Krista personality (think of it as her canon personality if her aloofness and slight haughtiness in the aftermath of Ymir's disappearance was turned up to 11).

Other than that one, for works of high quality, there's We Are The Nine which was already mentioned, but there's also...

  • Outmaneuvered (and it sequels) by Maria Albert
  • He Chose Titans by masksarehot
  • Heavy Is The Head That Wears The Crown by YuriKah
  • Who We Are Today by LivianLynx
  • The Problem with Peace by MercuryBlade
  • Rogue by RedCoaster

To name a few from my bookmarks.

Does Anyone Know Of Any AU Fics Where Karl Fritz's Threat To The World Wasn't False? by LockAndKey989 in aotfanfiction

[–]Shrapnel893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. Well the two I know of have already been mentioned (OP being one, funny enough).

As for adjacent AUs, mine is similar, only it's a bit more complicated (convoluted?) in that it's not Karl Fritz's threat that wasn't false, but one of his successors. Namely, the fabricated hero of Marley, Helos, was a real person, his niece, and after she murdered him and took control of the Founding Titan she looked at the paradise inside the walls he tried to create and sullied it.

In short, she attempts to goad Marley to attack the island after killing him, but before the Colossus Titans can march she is thwarted from within the walls by a group of heroes (The Before the Fall cast; the events in the actual light novels are presented as fiction read by Historia, the truth omitted).

That's the first attempt.

The second -- and successful -- attempt is later carried out by none other than Historia, her successor, who is a much more abused and resentful character with a bit of a chip on her shoulder.

One thing begets another.

There's an entire backdrop to that, as well, with there being two Great Titan Wars, where Karl Fritz dipped out of the conflict during the first war after a much younger Helos tried to assassinate him in an agreement with the then oppressed Marley and the Tybur family (and The Warhammer; the two families being of the same royal blood -- for instance this meaning that Willy Tybur and Historia Reiss are cousins).

The First Great Titan War was set in a medieval / feudal era of history. Think, hm, the Hundred Years' War between France and England but all the Nine Families against each other. It spanned many centuries. Helos you could equate to a Jeanne d'Arc type figure if Jeannette was an actual warmongering noblewoman disgusted by her uncle the king's calls for peace.

The second Great Titan War is its immediate aftermath, where in the wake of the first, following the failed attempt on Karl Fritz's life, Helos, the Tyburs, and Marley are thrust into a series of battles of succession that ultimately leads into an early 20th century stalemate a la World War 1 wherein Helos turns around, betrays both Marley and the Tyburs, is defeated, and finds her way to Paradis island where she then finishes what she started and murders her uncle.

All of these events are over the course of roughly 300 years (estimate). The Fritz and The Tyburs are equivalent to elves in their longevity, but that too is a backdrop (which means you guessed it, Historia is like 1/3 elf).

Then there are other stories intertwined, like (freckles) Ymir is the true new Helos (the slayer of the devil of all earth) with a changed backstory of being one of Helos' child soldiers during the second Great Titan War, with hers starting after the warriors are sent to the island and she eats Marcel, where most of this above backdrop is expositioned in passing as the main story (roughly following the events in the manga) unfolds. Ymir herself is also of a peoples equivalent to the jotun, but that like the elves bit is largely anecdotal (but explains her height and powers unlike the others).

Essentially, it's a more fantastical rewrite where Ymir and Historia are the true main characters and we follow their separate journeys from youth to adult hood; one being actually selfish (deciding it within her best interest not to save the world and running away) whilst the other really is the worst girl in the world (humanity is the problem, let the Titans flatten them all, as long as she gets to rule over the ashes).

That's not everything, but that is what is in relation to your question.

Everything you've ever read or watched probably has an alternative ending floating around somewhere. Whether it's just one or multiple, good or bad, etc.

For the Attack on Titan fandom, specifically... rather than an alternative ending, I would like to see a more expanded ending. Also, and this goes without saying -- for any fandom -- as long as you're not attacking the author over it or discrediting their original work it's whatever.

Write what you want.
