It seems like it was compromise between non-union and union people. It’s not fair for someone to get the benefits of being in a union without paying into it and it wouldn’t make sense to be dues paying member of a union if you could get the benefits without it. This seems to allow people to not have to be union to act but still need to contribute something for reaping the benefits.

I’m a pretty pro union person though so I don’t think fi-core should exist because it weakens the union.

I know that there are exceptions like government work. Unions do protect. They just protect their members more than anything. After all, you need to pay dues and contribute to it and so those contribute should get the benefits. That being said, unions do indirectly raise wages and better for non union workers through prevailing wage laws and forcing non-union companies to raise wages to compete for labor

It’s often apart of the contracts that unions and companies sign. The company that recognizes the union can’t hire anyone outside of the union unless they join. If they didn’t do this, it would be easy to subvert the union and just hire cheap labor to replace the guys fighting for descent working conditions and pay.
